Fidelity of Hymenoptera and Diptera pollinators in onion (Allium cepa L.) pollination

        Shafqat SAEED,Asif SAJJAD1,권오석,권용정 한국곤충학회 2008 Entomological Research Vol.38 No.4

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is protandrous in nature and requires cross-pollination to avoid inbreeding. The pollination potential of native bees (Hymenoptera) and true flies (Diptera) was assessed in the perspective of finding the best pollinators for onion cross-pollination and seed multiplication. The community of pollinators was composed of four bee species and twelve true fly species. Episyrphus balteatus, Eupeodes sp.,Musca domestica and Eristalinus aeneus were the most abundant pollinators. The maximum pollinator activity was observed from 12 to 24 days after opening of the flowers. The pollination effectiveness of tested bees (Apis dorsata and Apis florea) was greater than true flies (E. balteatus, Eupeodes sp., M. domestica, E. aeneus and Callihoridae sp.) in terms of Spears values.

A Case Report of Prolonged Hemorrhage Following Traditional Phlebotomy (Fasd)

Sadeghi Sajjad,Sadeghi Sajjad 대한약침학회 2024 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.27 No.1

Phlebotomy, a therapeutic method of bloodletting typically performed using a needle, has a traditional technique known as “Fasd.” In this method, blood is extracted by creating a longitudinal incision on a vein (3-5 mm) with a surgical scalpel blade, usually blade No. 11. Due to the incision in the vessel wall, establishing hemostasis is more challenging compared to conventional methods. Hemostasis is usually achieved within minutes after Fasd. We present a case highlighting an uncommon yet significant complication of traditional phlebotomy. A 55-year-old man with no prior medical conditions underwent traditional phlebotomy at an academic traditional medicine clinic. Senior MD-PhD students in Iranian Traditional Medicine, under professor supervision, performed Fasd. A sterile scalpel blade No. 11 was used to create a longitudinal incision of approximately 4 mm on the patient’s median basilic vein in the right hand. After removing 400 cc of blood, a pressure dressing was applied to the incision site. Despite attempts such as hand elevation, ice pack application, prolonged direct pressure, and tight elastic bandaging, bleeding from the incision persisted. After an hour of supportive therapy, hemostasis was eventually achieved within a few minutes using burnt cotton dressing (a traditional method for blood hemostasis). Following intravenous hydration, the patient was discharged in stable condition and reported no issues during the one-month follow-up. The traditional phlebotomy (Fasd) carries the risk of serious complications, including uncontrolled and prolonged bleeding. Further research on the efficacy and safety of burnt cotton dressing for controlling hemostasis is recommended.

      • Adaptive Decoupling Control of the Quadruple-Tank System

Sajjad Pourmohammad,Alireza Yazdizadeh 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10

Level control of a quadruple-tank process with severe coupling effect is investigated in this paper. The plant provides a nice benchmark problem that illustrates some of the challenges posed by complex interconnected systems to linear design paradigms. The system has some special features like nonlinear dynamics, multi-input multi-output nature, and an adjustable zero location that makes it ideal for illustrating many concepts in multivariable control systems. Most of the recently proposed control methods suffer from a nice decoupling control scheme. Among these control schemes, model predictive control is superior in coping with the coupling effect however it can only decouple the system if an accurate model of the system is used in the control design stage. In this paper an adaptive nonlinear feedback linearization scheme is proposed that can completely decouple and linearize the system in all working points even in the presence of a model-mismatch. A comparison between the proposed controller, conventional PID control and the constrained model predictive control scheme is also given by some simulation results.

EBCO - Efficient Boundary Detection and Tracking Continuous Objects in WSNs

( Sajjad Hussain Chauhdary ),( Jeongjoon Lee ),( Sayed Chhattan Shah ),( Myong-soon Park ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2012 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.6 No.11

Recent research in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) and wireless communication has enabled tracking of continuous objects, including fires, nuclear explosions and bio-chemical material diffusions. This paper proposes an energy-efficient scheme that detects and tracks different dynamic shapes of a continuous object (i.e., the inner and outer boundaries of a continuous object). EBCO (Efficient Boundary detection and tracking of Continuous Objects in WSNs) exploits the sensing capabilities of sensor nodes by automatically adjusting the sensing range to be either a boundary sensor node or not, instead of communicating to its neighboring sensor nodes because radio communication consumes more energy than adjusting the sensing range. The proposed scheme not only increases the tracking accuracy by choosing the bordering boundary sensor nodes on the phenomenon edge, but it also minimizes the power consumption by having little communication among sensor nodes. The simulation result shows that our proposed scheme minimizes the energy consumption and achieves more precise tracking results than existing approaches.

      • Sparse coded image super-resolution using K-SVD trained dictionary based on regularized orthogonal matching pursuit.

        Sajjad, Muhammad,Mehmood, Irfan,Baik, Sung Wook Pergamon Press 2015 Bio-medical materials and engineering Vol.26 No.1

<P>Image super-resolution (SR) plays a vital role in medical imaging that allows a more efficient and effective diagnosis process. Usually, diagnosing is difficult and inaccurate from low-resolution (LR) and noisy images. Resolution enhancement through conventional interpolation methods strongly affects the precision of consequent processing steps, such as segmentation and registration. Therefore, we propose an efficient sparse coded image SR reconstruction technique using a trained dictionary. We apply a simple and efficient regularized version of orthogonal matching pursuit (ROMP) to seek the coefficients of sparse representation. ROMP has the transparency and greediness of OMP and the robustness of the L1-minization that enhance the dictionary learning process to capture feature descriptors such as oriented edges and contours from complex images like brain MRIs. The sparse coding part of the K-SVD dictionary training procedure is modified by substituting OMP with ROMP. The dictionary update stage allows simultaneously updating an arbitrary number of atoms and vectors of sparse coefficients. In SR reconstruction, ROMP is used to determine the vector of sparse coefficients for the underlying patch. The recovered representations are then applied to the trained dictionary, and finally, an optimization leads to high-resolution output of high-quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the super-resolution reconstruction quality of the proposed scheme is comparatively better than other state-of-the-art schemes.</P>

Evaluation of Genetic Diversity of Aegilops tauschii Accessions Using Morphological Characters

Sajjad Mansouri,Danial Kahrizi,Ali Ashraf Mehrabi 한국작물학회 2013 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.16 No.3

A collection of sixty-three accessions of Ae. tauschii belonging to different eco-geographical regions were used to evaluate its genetic diversity by 15 morphological characters. The data recorded were analyzed on all accessions using multivariate analyses. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that first six principal components with eigenvalues more than 1 explained 77.2% of the variability amongst accessions. Through cluster analysis according to Euclidian distance and UPGMA method, accessions divided into three groups. Knowledge of genetic diversity in Aegilops species provides different levels of information which is important in the management of germplasm resources.

The Low Down on Association Mapping in Hexaploid Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Sajjad, Muhammad,Khan, Sultan Habibullah,Kazi, Abdul Mujeeb 한국작물학회 2012 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.15 No.3

The past few decades have witnessed hundreds of family-based linkage studies mapping for numerous traits but only a limited number of QTLs were actually cloned, tagged, or used for marker-assisted selection. Although providing valuable information, this conventional approach cannot be scaled up to underpin the incredible amount of phenotypic variation in the form of 266, 589 hexaploid wheat accessions maintained in public germplasm collections. Association mapping has recently emerged as an alternative and more powerful mapping approach where a natural population is surveyed to determine marker-trait associations using linkage disequilibrium (LD). After its first application for milling quality in 2006, association mapping studies in hexaploid wheat are being extended to tag yield traits, protein quality, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Advances in genotyping technology and statistical approaches greatly accelerated the shift from conventional linkage-based mapping to LD-based association mapping. Association mapping stands out because of simultaneous utilization of a large number of ex situ-conserved natural variation due to historical recombination events accumulated over centuries.

Tissue distribution and functional characterization of odorant binding proteins in Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

        Sajjad Ali Khuhro,Hui Liao,Guan-Heng Zhu,Shuang-Mei Li,Zhan-Feng Ye,Shuang-Lin Dong 한국응용곤충학회 2017 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.20 No.4

Odorant binding proteins (OBPs) play important roles in the insect olfaction and other diverse physiological processes. Forty OBP genes have been molecularly identified from Chilo suppressalis (Walker), a notorious rice pest in Asian countries, but little is known about the olfactory function for most of these genes. In the present study, we first determined the tissue expression profiles of 34 OBPs (excluding two general odorant bonding proteins (GOBPs) and four pheromone binding protein (PBPs)) by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), and found that 9 genes (OBP1, 3, 4, 11, 15, 17, 19, 20 and 24) were specifically or predominantly expressed in antennae of both sexes, suggesting their roles in olfaction, while three genes (OBP29, 30 and 32) were almost not expressed in antennae. Focusing on olfactory roles, the ligand specificities of six antenna specifically or predominantly expressed genes were further investigated for 35 plant volatiles, using the fluorescence competitive binding assays. The results revealed that six OBPs displayed different ligand preference, suggesting a differentiation of OBPs in ligand binding spectrum. Of six tested OBPs, OBP3, 11, 17, 19 and 31 showed moderate (Ki =10.21–19.85 μM) or high (Ki < 10.00 μM) binding affinity for 11 and one plant volatiles, respectively. In particular, a plant volatile β-ionone had high or moderate binding to all five OBPs. Our study suggests that these five OBP genes play important roles in the perception of different host plant volatiles, providing insight into the olfactory mechanism in C. suppressalis.
