Leaf blotch of wheat caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana is a major constraint to wheat production, causing significant yield reduction resulting in severe economic impact. The present study characterizes to determine and compare pathogenic variability exist/not based on components of leaf blotch disease development and level of aggressiveness due to agroclimatic condition of B. sorokiniana in wheat. A total of 169 virulent isolates of B. sorokiniana isolated from spot blotch infected leaf from different wheat growing agroclimate of Bangladesh. Pathogenic variability was investigated on a susceptible wheat variety 'kanchan' now in Bangladesh. A clear evidence of positive relationship among the components was recorded. From hierarchical cluster analysis five groups were originating among the isolates. It resolved that a large amount of pathogenic diversity exists in Bipolaris sorokiniana. Variation in aggressiveness was found among the isolates from different wheat growing areas. Most virulent isolates BS 24 and BS 33 belonging to High Ganges River Flood Plain agro-climatic zones considered by rice-wheat cropping pattern, hot and humid weather, high land and low organic matter content in soil. Positive relationship was found between pathogenic variability and aggressiveness with agro-climatic condition.

<P>The present work investigates protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) and the α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of two edible brown algae, <I>Ecklonia stolonifera</I> and <I>Eisenia bicyclis</I>, as well as in their isolated phlorotannins. Since the individual extracts and fractions showed significant inhibitory activities, column chromatography was performed to isolate six phlorotannins, phloroglucinol (1), dioxinodehydroeckol (2), eckol (3), phlorofurofucoeckol-A (4), dieckol (5), and 7-phloroeckol (6). Phlorotannins 3–6 were potent and noncompetitive PTP1B inhibitors with IC50 values ranging from 0.56 to 2.64 μ<SMALL>M</SMALL>; 4–6 exhibited the most potent α-glucosidase inhibition with IC50 values ranging from 1.37 to 6.13 μ<SMALL>M</SMALL>. Interestingly, 4 and 6 were noncompetitive, while 5 exhibited competitive inhibition in an α-glucosidase assay. <I>E. stolonifera</I> and <I>E. bicyclis</I> as well as their isolated phlorotannins therefore possessed marked PTP1B and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities; this could lead to opportunities in the development of therapeutic agents to control the postprandial blood glucose level and thereby prevent diabetic complications.</P>

Novel microgels of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)-co-methacrylic acid (MAA) (NIPAM-co-MAA) with different contents of N,N-methylene bis acrylamide (MBA) were prepared by emulsion polymerization technique and were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurement. Effect of pH, temperature and different salts concentration on the microgel particles was investigated. DLS results have shown that the hydrodynamic radius of the microgel increased upon increasing pH and decreased upon increasing temperature. The swelling/deswelling behaviors as determined by DLS showed the ionic repulsions of the carboxyl group of the methacrylic acid and hydrophobic interaction of NIPAM. The effect of various salts on volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) was also investigated. Upon increasing salt concentration, VPTT became broad and shifted to a lower temperature. Electrophoretic mobility measurements showed an increase with increasing pH and temperature at a constant ionic strength.
