Changes in Number of Granulosa Cells, Follicular Fluid Levels and Diameter of Oocytes during Folliculogenesis in Pre-pubertal Gilts at Marketing Weight

        Chiou, C.M.,Yang, T.S.,Yeh, S.P.,Tsai, M.Z.,Cheng, S.P.,Huang, M.C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2004 Animal Bioscience Vol.17 No.12

The follicles (1.8 to 7.8 mm in diameter) were recovered from the ovaries in marketed pigs and the number of granulosa cells, the diameter of oocytes obtained from different development stages of the follicles and follicular fluid levels were determined. Correlations between size measurements and cell counts as well as the diameter of antral follicles and oocytes were also investigated. The results indicated that, while expanding in size, follicle numbers decreased with a greater atretic proportion. Granulosa cells increased in numbers continuously and remained unchanged beyond the size of 200 ${mm}^3$ in non-atretic follicles, whereas a sudden drop of granulosa counts was observed in atretic follicles. Follicular fluid, on the other hand, linearly increased its volume with follicle size and differed little between those of non-atretic and atretic follicles. Diameters of oocytes in non-atretic follicles increased to its maximum when follicles expanded to 150 ${mm}^3$ and maintained its size during later follicular expansion. It is concluded that, for in vitro culture, the optimal size of porcine follicle should be between 150 to 180 ${mm}^3$if they are collected from pre-pubertal gilts of marketing size slaughtered in an abattoir.

Cross-Coupled Narrow-Band YBCO Filters with Spurious Suppression by Using a Tap-Connection Technique

        L. M. Wang,Chung-I G. Hsu,D. S. Hsieh,L. H. Chen,M. L. Chu,S. M. Chiou 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.48 No.5I

Narrow-band microstrip cross-coupled band-pass filters based on a quadruplet geometry were designed for wireless-communication applications. High-Tc superconducting (HTS) filters were fabricated by patterning YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) films double-side deposited on 20-mm-square and 0.5- mm-thick LaAlO3 substrates. The filters with skew-symmetric feed were designed with a center frequency at 1.9 GHz and a bandwidth of 20 MHz. The inductive coupling between the non-adjacent resonators produced a pair of transmission zeros in the frequency response. Also observed was an additional pair of transmission zeros that enhance the out-of-band rejection characteristics. The realized YBCO filter showed a center frequency at 1.925 GHz with a bandwidth of 20 MHz and a minimum insertion loss of about 0.74 dB. Furthermore, a tap-connection technique was applied to cross-coupled HTS band-pass filters so as to suppress the second and/or the third passbands, which were spurious and undesirable. To improve the out-of-band performance of the band-pass filters, we tapped the input/output microstrip lines at certain locations. In this research, we confirmed that by tapping somewhere along the input/output microstrip lines, a /4 open stub or a /2 short stub, where refers to the guided wavelength at 2fo or 3fo, may effectively suppress harmonics at 2fo and/or 3fo by more than 25 dB. The simulated and the experimental results are discussed.

USING FUZZY LOGIC CONTROLLER AND EVOLUTIONARY GENETIC ALGORITHM FOR AUTOMOTIVE ACTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM

        J.-S. CHIOU,M.-T. LIU 한국자동차공학회 2009 International journal of automotive technology Vol.10 No.6

This study designs a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for an active automobile suspension system in which the membership functions and control rules are optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). The objective of the FLC is to strike an optimal balance between the ride comfort and the vehicle stability. The values of the crossover and mutation parameters in the GA are adapted dynamically during the convergence procedure using a fuzzy control scheme. The convergence state of the GA is determined by using a support vector machine (SVM) method to identify the variation in each of the genes of the best-fit GA chromosome following each iteration loop. The feasibility of the proposed GA-assisted FLC scheme is verified by performing a series of numerical simulations in which the characteristics of the controlled plant are compared with those observed in a passive suspension system and obtained under an optimal linear feedback controller. The results demonstrate that the GA-assisted FLC results in a lower suspension deflection, a reduced sprung mass acceleration and a lower bouncing distance between the tire and the ground. The Effects of Probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri Pg4 Strain on Intestinal Characteristics and Performance in Broilers

        Yu, B.,Liu, J.R.,Chiou, M.Y.,Hsu, Y.R.,Chiou, W.S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.8

This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using L. reuteri Pg4, a strain isolated from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of healthy broilers, as a probiotic. In preliminary in vitro studies the Pg4 strain was proven capable of tolerating acid and bile salts, inhibiting pathogenic bacteria and can adhere to intestinal epithelial cells. The probiotic properties were then evaluated on the basis of the broiler's growth performance, intestinal microbial population and cecal volatile fatty acid and lactic acid concentrations under conventional feeding. Dietary supplementation of dried L. reuteri Pg4 decreased significantly feed intake in grower chickens and improved significantly the feed conversion by 5% in a 0-6 weeks feeding period compared with the control group. The Lactobacillus counts in the crop, ileum, and cecum of the probiotic group were higher than in the control group. The L. reuteri Pg4 strain was traceable in the GI tract of probiotic supplemented chicks and showed capability of survival in the intestine for a protracted period. The probiotic group had a higher lactic acid concentration and lower pH value in the cecum than the control chicks. Probiotic supplement also affected the histology of the intestinal mucosa of chicks. The present findings demonstrated that L. reuteri Pg4 possesses probiotic characteristics and it is suggested, therefore, that the organism could be a candidate for a new probiotic strain.
