NeLS Research Center was formed in the end of 1997, and started the key technology developments of the low earth orbit constellation system for global multimedia mobile satellite communications service. For the NeLS constellation, 120 satellites with 1200 km of satellite altitude, was selected. For the satellite antenna developments, the digital beam forming technology was employed. In order to reduce the SSPA power consumption and to keep good linearity, novel pre-distortion type and distortion feedback type linearizer were developed. For the optical ISL system, de optical modem and optical tracking mechanism were developed. The optical DPSK/differential detection modem was evaluated. For the optical antenna mechanism, Coude type, the elbow type and the active universal joint type of optical antenna mechanism were developed. For the satellite network study, the satellite ATM network simulator was developed.

Objective: In the treatment of patients with schizophrenia, pro re nata (PRN) drugs are commonly prescribed for medical indications such as agitation, acute psychiatric symptoms, insomnia, and anxiety. However, high-quality evidence supporting the use of PRN medications is lacking, and these drugs are administered on the basis of clinical experience and habits. Therefore, the actual use of psychotropic PRN drugs and its influence on the patients’ outcomes need to be investigated. Methods: This study included 205 patients who underwent inpatient treatment for schizophrenia. We investigated the prescription of psychotropic drugs before admission and at discharge, as well as the dosing frequency of PRN drugs during hospitalization. We also examined the influence of psychotropic PRN drug use on hospitalization days, antipsychotic polypharmacy, and readmission rates. Results: Patients who used psychotropic PRN drugs during hospitalization had significantly longer hospitalization days (p = 7.5 × 10−4) and significantly higher rates of antipsychotic polypharmacy (p = 2.4 × 10−4) at discharge than those who did not use psychotropic PRN drugs. Moreover, a higher number of psychotropic PRN drugs used per day was associated with higher readmission rates within 3 months of discharge (p = 4.4 × 10−3). Conclusion: Psychotropic PRN drug use is associated with prolonged hospitalization, antipsychotic polypharmacy, and increased readmission rates in inpatients with schizophrenia. Therefore, psychiatric symptoms should be stabilized with regularly prescribed medications without the extensive use of psychotropic PRN drugs. Moreover, a system for monitoring and reexamining PRN drug use needs to be established.

The present paper describes an approach to the construction of a sensor network using a messaging network. A messaging network is an over lay network with a set of content-aware message handling ca-pabilities. The use of a messaging network can reduce the complexity and maintenance burden of integrated sensor information systems. Message mediation(afunction of the messaging network) enables interoperation of various applications and integration of diverse sensor data. Subscription(an other concept in the messaging network) enables proper information delivery of the sensor data to each user. The proposed approach is helpful in implementing an SOA-based sensor network and enables flexible sensor network configuration and utilization.

Next-generation LEO System Research Center (NeLS) has carried out the key technology development of global multimedia mobile satellite communications. In Phase I we studied the system definition and developed key technologies such as on-board active phased array antenna with digital beam forming, optical antenna, optical modem, wavelength division multiplexing for optical inter-satellite link system, satellite network, and variable rate modulation. In Phase 2, we plan to verify the developed technology in Phase 1 on space. In this paper, we introduce the results of development in Phase 1.
