Numerical and Experimental Studies on Cyclic Behavior of Beam-to-Column Connection with Yielding Steel Damper

Reza Molavi,Mohsen Izadinia,Ali Reza Shahidi 한국강구조학회 2020 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.20 No.2

In this paper, cyclic behavior of a new type of beam-to-column connection comprising yielding damper with a circular pattern at depth of the beam was evaluated. The effects of different parameters on proposed connection behavior were also studied. Results of both finite element analysis and experimental tests showed that all the specimens of proposed connection have a stable cyclic behavior. Reliable design for damper at connection maintaining stiffness, strength, and energy dissipation in beam-to-column connections at an acceptable level concentrated inelastic deformations in damper, and also keeping structural members such as beams and columns in elastic range.

      • Total and Partial Prevalence of Cancer Across Kerman Province, Iran, in 2014, Using an Adapted Generalized Network Scale-Up Method

Vardanjani, Hossein Molavi,Baneshi, Mohammad Reza,Haghdoost, AliAkbar Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.13

Due to the lack of nationwide population-based cancer registration, the total cancer prevalence in Iran is unknown. Our previous work in which we used a basic network scale-up (NSU) method, failed to provide plausible estimates of total cancer prevalence in Kerman. The aim of the present study was to estimate total and partial prevalence of cancer in southeastern Iran using an adapted version of the generalized network scale-up method. A survey was conducted in 2014 using multi-stage cluster sampling. A total of 1995 face-to-face gender-matched interviews were performed based on an adapted version of the NSU questionnaire. Interviewees were asked about their family cancer history. Total and partial prevalence were estimated using a generalized NSU estimator. The Monte Carlo method was adopted for the estimation of upper/lower bounds of the uncertainty range of point estimates. One-yr, 2-3 yr, and 4-5 yr prevalence (per 100,000 people) was respectively estimated at 78 (95%CI, 66, 90), 128 (95%CI, 118, 147), and 59 (95%CI, 49, 70) for women, and 48 (95%CI, 38, 58), 78 (95%CI, 66, 91), and 42 (95%CI, 32, 52) for men. The 5-yr prevalence of all cancers was estimated at 0.18 percent for men, and 0.27 percent for women. This study showed that the generalized familial network scale-up method is capable of estimating cancer prevalence, with acceptable precision.

Fabrication of Functionally Graded Electrospun Membranes Based on Silk Fibroin for Using as Dental Barrier Membranes in Guided Bone Regeneration

        Samaneh Ghafouri,Ali Reza Sadeghi-avalshahr,Amir Mahdi Molavi,Halimeh Hassanzadeh 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.9

The guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique has been extensively used to preserve or regenerate the alveolarridge by a membrane. This work aimed to design a functionally graded membrane (FGM) based on Bombyx mori silk fibroin(SF) natural protein with excellent handling and flexibility using electrospinning technique. This FGM membrane consists oftwo practical layers, one layer for preventing gingival fibroblast ingrowth and the other for supporting osteogenic cell growth, used in the guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique. Both layers were fabricated through the electrospinning techniquewith different collector speeds (800 & 2000 rpm). Soaking in glycerol and mechanical cold pressing was utilized to mitigatethe brittleness of electrospun mats and enhance their tensile strength, respectively. The biodegradation rate was studied invitro through soaking in artificial saliva. The mechanical properties of fabricated samples were measured using a microtensile test machine. In addition, the viability of cells was evaluated via MTT and cell attachment assays. A field emissionscanning electron microscope (FESEM) was also utilized for morphological observations in different steps of production. The biodegradation rate showed negligible mass loss after 4 weeks. The maximum tensile strength of functionally gradedmembranes (FGM) was obtained around 9 MPa in dry state. Microstructural evaluation of samples revealed beadles structureand acceptable adhesion and growth of fibroblast cells on them. The viability of cells using MTT assay was revealed nocytotoxic effects. The results of different characterizations show promising potential of produced FGM samples forapplication as dental barrier membranes in guided bone regeneration.

      • Application of a Network Scale-up Method to Estimate the Size of Population of Breast, Ovarian/Cervical, Prostate and Bladder Cancers

Haghdoost, Ali Akbar,Baneshi, Mohammad Reza,Haji-Maghsoodi, Saeedeh,Molavi-Vardanjani, Hossein,Mohebbi, Elham Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.8

Network scale up (NSU) is a novel approach to estimate parameters in hard to reach populations through asking people the number of individuals they know in their active social network. Although the method have been used in hidden populations, advantages of NSU indicate that exploration of applicability to disease like cancer might be feasible. The aim of this study was to assess the application of NSU to estimate the size of the population of breast, ovarian/cervical, prostate, and bladder cancers in the South-east of Iran. A total of 3,052 (99% response rate) Kermanian people were interviewed in 2012-2013. Based on NSU, participants were asked about if they know any people on their social network who suffered from breast, ovarian/cervical, prostate, and bladder cancers, if yes, they should enumerate them. A total of 1,650 persons living with four types of cancers (breast, ovary/cervix, prostate, and bladder) were identified by the respondents. Totally, the prevalence of people living with the four types of cancers was 228.4 per 100,000 Kermanian inhabitants. The most prevalent cancer was breast cancer, at 168.9 per 100,000, followed by prostate cancer with 116.9, ovarian/cervical cancer with 99.8, and bladder cancer with 36.3 per 100000 Kerman city population. NSU values provide a usable but not very precise way of estimating the size of subpopulations in the context of the four major cancers (breast, ovary/cervix, prostate, and bladder).

Switched Substrate-Shield-Based Low-Loss CMOS Inductors for Wide Tuning Range VCOs

Agarwal, Pawan,Sah, Suman Prasad,Molavi, Reza,Mirabbasi, Shahriar,Pande, Partha Pratim,Oh, Seung Eel,Kim, Jong-Hoon,Heo, Deukhyoun Professional Technical Group on Microwace Theory a 2017 IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniqu Vol. No.

A switched substrate-shield inductor (SSI) topology in bulk CMOS is proposed which minimizes parasitic capacitance and substrate losses, while tuned magnetically induced currents facilitate inductor tunability. The high frequency behavior of the induced current is analyzed, resulting in intuitive insights and design guidelines for a high-performance SSI. An SSI prototype in 65-nm bulk CMOS achieves 34% inductance tunability with a quality factor of >10.3. A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using SSI achieves 40.3% tuning range, from 21 to 31.6 GHz, and a phase noise of -119.1 ± 3.7 dBc/Hz at 10-MHz offset frequencies. The VCO core consumes 4.3 ± 0.2 mW from a 1-V supply.
