Alternative plate finite elements for the analysis of thick plates on elastic foundations

        Ozgan, K.,Daloglu, Ayse T. Techno-Press 2007 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.26 No.1

A four-noded plate bending quadrilateral (PBQ4) and an eight-noded plate bending quadrilateral (PBQ8) element based on Mindlin plate theory have been adopted for modeling the thick plates on elastic foundations using Winkler model. Transverse shear deformations have been included, and the stiffness matrices of the plate elements and the Winkler foundation stiffness matrices are developed using Finite Element Method based on thick plate theory. A computer program is coded for this purpose. Various loading and boundary conditions are considered, and examples from the literature are solved for comparison. Shear locking problem in the PBQ4 element is observed for small value of subgrade reaction and plate thickness. It is noted that prevention of shear locking problem in the analysis of the thin plate is generally possible by using element PBQ8. It can be concluded that, the element PBQ8 is more effective and reliable than element PBQ4 for solving problems of thin and thick plates on elastic foundations.

A consistent FEM-Vlasov model for laminated orthotropic beams subjected to moving load

Korhan Ozgan 국제구조공학회 2017 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.64 No.1

In the study, dynamic behavior of laminated orthotropic beams on elastic foundation is investigated. Consistent model presented here combines the finite element solution of the system with SAP2000 software and the calculation of soil parameters with MATLAB software using Modified Vlasov Model type elastic foundation. For this purpose, a computing tool is coded in MATLAB which employs Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) feature of SAP2000 to provide two-way data flow during execution. Firstly, an example is taken from the literature to demonstrate the accuracy of the consistent FEMVlasov Model. Subsequently, the effects of boundary conditions, subsoil depth, elasticity modulus of subsoil, slenderness ratio, velocity of moving load and lamination scheme on the behavior of laminated orthotropic beams on elastic foundation are investigated on a new numerical example. It can be concluded that it is really convenient to use OAPI feature of SAP2000 to model this complex behavior of laminated orthotropic beams on elastic foundation under moving load.

The effective depth of soil stratum for plates resting on elastic foundation

        Daloglu, Ayse T.,Ozgan, K. Techno-Press 2004 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.18 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to determine the subsoil depth affected from the load on the plate resting on elastic foundation using stress distribution within the subsoil that will be occurred depending on the loading and dimension of the plate. An iterative method is developed in order to determine the effective depth of the subsoil under the plate. Numerical examples from the technical literature are solved by means of the method suggested herein and displacements, bending moments and shear forces are presented in graphical and tabular forms to evaluate the effects of the limit depth considered in the study. Results showed the efficiency and simplicity of the present approach for the plate resting on an elastic foundation.

A consistent FEM-Vlasov model for hyperbolic cooling towers on layered soil under unsymmetrical wind load

        Karakas, Ali I.,Ozgan, Korhan,Daloglu, Ayse T. Techno-Press 2016 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.22 No.6

In this paper, the analysis of hyperbolic cooling tower on elastic subsoil exposed to unsymmetrical wind loading is presented. Modified Vlasov foundation model is used to determine the soil parameters as a function of vertical deformation profile within subsoil. The iterative parameter updating procedure involves the use of Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) feature of SAP2000 to provide two way data flow during execution. A computing tool coded in MATLAB employing OAPI is used to perform the analysis of hyperbolic cooling tower with supporting columns over a hollow annular raft founded on elastic subsoil. The analysis of such complex soil-structure system is investigated under self-weight and unsymmetrical wind load. The response of the cooling tower on elastic subsoil is compared with that of a tower that its supporting raft foundation is treated as fixed at the base. The results show that the effect of subsoil on the behavior of cooling tower is considerable at the top and bottom of the wall as well as supporting columns and raft foundation. The application of a full-size cooling tower has demonstrated that the procedure is simple, fast and can easily be implemented in practice.
