Simultaneous Control of Frequency Fluctuation and Battery SOC in a Smart Grid using LFC and EV Controllers based on Optimal MIMO-MPC

Jonglak Pahasa,Issarachai Ngamroo 대한전기학회 2017 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.12 No.2

This paper proposes a simultaneous control of frequency deviation and electric vehicles (EVs) battery state of charge (SOC) using load frequency control (LFC) and EV controllers. In order to provide both frequency stabilization and SOC schedule near optimal performance within the whole operating regions, a multiple-input multiple-output model predictive control (MIMO-MPC) is employed for the coordination of LFC and EV controllers. The MIMO-MPC is an effective modelbased prediction which calculates future control signals by an optimization of quadratic programming based on the plant model, past manipulate, measured disturbance, and control signals. By optimizing the input and output weights of the MIMO-MPC using particle swarm optimization (PSO), the optimal MIMO-MPC for simultaneous control of the LFC and EVs, is able to stabilize the frequency fluctuation and maintain the desired battery SOC at the certain time, effectively. Simulation study in a two-area interconnected power system with wind farms shows the effectiveness of the proposed MIMO-MPC over the proportional integral (PI) controller and the decentralized vehicle to grid control (DVC) controller.

Power System Oscillations Damping by Robust Decentralized DFIG Wind Turbines

Surinkaew, Tossaporn,Ngamroo, Issarachai The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2015 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.10 No.2

This paper proposes a new robust decentralized power oscillation dampers (POD) design of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine for damping of low frequency electromechanical oscillations in an interconnected power system. The POD structure is based on the practical $2^{nd}$-order lead/lag compensator with single input. Without exact mathematical model, the inverse output multiplicative perturbation is applied to represent system uncertainties such as system parameters variation, various loading conditions etc. The parameters optimization of decentralized PODs is carried out so that the stabilizing performance and robust stability margin against system uncertainties are guaranteed. The improved firefly algorithm is applied to tune the optimal POD parameters automatically. Simulation study in two-area four-machine interconnected system shows that the proposed robust POD is much superior to the conventional POD in terms of stabilizing effect and robustness.

Design of Optimal Fuzzy Logic based PI Controller using Multiple Tabu Search Algorithm for Load Frequency Control

Saravuth Pothiya,Issarachai Ngamroo,Suwan Runggeratigul,Prinya Tantaswadi 대한전기학회 2006 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.4 No.2

This paper focuses on a new optimization technique of a fuzzy logic based proportional integral (FLPI) load frequency controller by the multiple tabu search (MTS) algorithm. Conventionally, the membership functions and control rules of fuzzy logic control are obtained by trial and etTor method or experiences of designers. To overcome this problem, the MTS algorithm is proposed to simultaneously tune proportional integral gains, the membership functions and control rules of a FLPT load frequency controller in order to minimize the frequency deviations of the interconnected power system against load disturbances. The MTS algorithm introduces additional techniques for improvement of the search process such as initialization, adaptive search, multiple searches, crossover and restart process. Simulation results explicitly show that the performance of the proposed FLPI controller is superior to conventional PI and FLPI controllers in terms of overshoot and settling time. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed FLPI controller under variation of system parameters and load change are higher than that of conventional PI and FLPI controllers.

An Open Circuit Fault Diagnostic Technique in IGBTs for AC to DC Converters Applied in Microgrid Applications

        Surin Khomfoi,Warachart Sae-Kok,Issarachai Ngamroo 전력전자학회 2011 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.11 No.6

An open circuit fault diagnostic method in IGBTs for the ac to dc converters used in microgrid applications is developed in this paper. An ac to dc converter is a key technology for microgrids in order to interface both distributed generation (DG) and renewable energy resources (RES). Also, highly reliable ac to dc converters are necessary to keep converters in continuous operation as long as possible during power switch fault conditions. Therefore, the proposed fault diagnostic method is developed to reduce the fault detection time and to avoid any other fault alarms because continuous operation is desired. The proposed diagnostic method is a combination of the absolute normalized dc current technique and the false alarm suppression algorithm to overcome the long fault detection time and fault alarm problems. The simulation and experimental results show that the developed fault diagnostic method can perform fault detection within about one cycle. The results illustrate that the reliability of an ac to dc converter interfaced with a microgrid can be improved by using the proposed fault diagnostic method.

      • Suitable Subcarrier Design for Subcarrier Multiplexing on Multimode Fiber by Parallel Genetic Algorithm

        Phongnawin Benprom,Chairat Pinthong,Somyot Kaitwanidvilai,Issarachai Ngamroo,Surachet Kanprachar 대한전자공학회 2009 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2009 No.7

Genetic algorithm (GA) has been shown to be an alternative for achieving suitable subcarriers in subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) on multimode fiber. Because of the relatively-flat frequency response at high frequency range of the multimode fiber, the suitable subcarriers can be determined by applying GA to many divided frequency ranges simultaneously; that is, Parallel GA. In this paper, parallel GA is adopted for searching suitable subcarriers in SCM on multimode fiber. Thirty suitable subcarriers, which are not located at any nulls in the frequency response of multimode fiber, are determined. These subcarriers are then used for transmitting many subcarrier signals through the high frequency bands of multimode fiber resulting in a total data rate of 15 times larger than the data rate obtaining from the 3-㏈ intermodal bandwidth.
