        Seasonal Growth Dynamics of Posidonia oceanica in a Pristine Mediterranean Gulf

        Seasonal growth dynamics and ecology of Posidonia oceanica were studied in a space alongshore a pristine Mediterranean gulf in 2011–2012. About one-third of the present study surface area was occupied meadows where only calcite rocks were found on bottoms between 0.5 and 29 m. Shoot density was not significantly different among seasons, and was above 364 ± 27 shoots m−2, but was different among the depths. The density variables decreased along the bottom depth gradient along which the number of leaves per shoot, inter shoot distance and the morphometrical variables tended to increase. Inferring the dynamics of biometrics (length and width of leaf, orthotropic rhizomes and leaf sheath) and density (LAI, leaf biomass and the number of leaves per shoot), the biometrics of the meadow grew seasonally between growth by March and mortality by August–September, regardless of the coverage area. Mortality occurred due to the highest annual salinity in late summer. A transition depth in space and month in time was assessed as 15 m and as August for variation of the biometrics, respectively. Rhizome related-biometrics (length, thickness, weight, sheath length and width) were dynamically initialized mainly by water nitrogen content which was high by winter-spring. A PAR in the range of 10–32%, and surface water temperature up to 28.8–29.3 °C corresponding to up to ~ 40 PSU were critical limiting factors for P. oceanica to survive in space. Water physics, chemistry, and optical properties governed the annual course of biometrics. Total organic carbon was also negatively affecting the seasonal dynamics of the rhizome.

        Biometrical Variation of Posidonia oceanica with Different Bottom Types Along the Entire Turkish Mediterranean Coast

        The biometrical dynamics of Posidonia oceanica were studied with regard to variation and its depthwise extension with four major bottom types along the entire Turkish Mediterranean coasts in winter and summer during 2019. The bottom type which mainly consisted of rock, matte (hard bottom), sand, and mud (soft bottom) was a key determinant for biometrical (density and morphometric) changes which were more prominent in summer. The upper and lower limits of vertical depthwise extension of the meadows were restricted by the zonal distribution of the hard bottom. The limits were not restricted on the soft bottom. However, some large areas of the soft bottoms were devoid of the meadows depending on the existence of mobile substrate affected by the high dynamic of water movement. The density variables were higher on hard bottoms than on the soft bottoms; the inter-nodal distance was longer on matte than on rock, sand, and mud, in contrast to leaf biomass. Mud had the lowest number of leaves per shoot and shoot density, whereas rock had the highest number. The shortest rhizome was measured on the rock, while the longest rhizome was measured on matte, which also had the longest leaves. The soft bottoms had wider leaves than the hard bottoms had. Besides the seasonal and depthwise differences in the biometrics, the biometrics were separately assembled between rock and mud. Contrary to the morphometric variables, the density biometrics decreased linearly from the hard bottom to the soft bottom.

      • Relationships between Skin Cancers and Blood Groups - Link between Non-melanomas and ABO/Rh Factors

        Background: This investigation focused on possible relationships between skin cancers and ABO/Rh blood groups. Materials and Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2012, medical data of 255 patients with skin cancers who were admitted to Kayseri Training and Research Hospital, Radiation Oncology and Plastic Surgery Outpatient Clinics were retrospectively analyzed. Blood groups of these patients were recorded. The control group consisted of 25701 healthy volunteers who were admitted to Kayseri Training and Research Hospital, Blood Donation Center between January 2010 and December 2011. The distribution of the blood groups of the patients with skin cancers was compared to the distribution of ABO/Rh blood groups of healthy controls. The association of the histopathological subtypes of skin cancer with the blood groups was also investigated. Results: Of the patients, 50.2% had A type, 26.3% had O type, 16.1% had B type, and 7.5% had AB blood group with a positive Rh (+) in 77.3%. Of the controls, 44.3% had A type, 31.5% had 0 type, 16.1% had B type, and 8.1% had AB blood group with a positive Rh (+) in 87.8%. There was a statistically significant difference in the distribution of blood groups and Rh factors (A Rh (-) and 0 Rh positive) between the patients and controls. A total of 36.8% and 20.4% of the patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) had A Rh (+) and B Rh (+), respectively, while 39.2% and 27.6% of the controls had A Rh (+) and B Rh (+), respectively. A significant relationship was observed between the patients with BCC and controls in terms of A Rh (-) (p=0.001). Conclusion: Our study results demonstrated that there is a significant relationship between non-melanoma skin cancer and ABO/Rh factors.
