Core Factors Influencing the Perceptions of Adolescenses in Higher Education Relating to The Impact of Technological Innovations on Human Interaction

Mehmet Ali Gurola,Ergun Ozgurb 한국데이타베이스학회 2014 Journal of information technology applications & m Vol.21 No.1

This paper aims to reach the perceptions, ideas and intentions of the higher education adolescences on the effects of technological innovations over interrelation/communication between individuals. While advances in technology commonly works for the welfare and benefit of humankind, paradoxically in some instances could have negative outcomes on interrelations among individuals, minimizing face-to-face communication. The perceptions, so ideas of the individuals on the matter could differ depending on their age, gender, race and the culture beyond their relative intimacy and closeness to ICT tools. In order to penetrate the basic initiatives leading the perceptions of adolescents on the effects of technological improvements on human interrelations/ communication, a survey is conducted with 157 students in high education consisting of Asian, African, Cypriot, Turkish nationals. Results indicate that participants use technological tools for communication which lessens their face-to-face interaction. However they prefer social media more than face-to-face communication during conflict or undesirable situations

The use of infrared thermography to detect the stages of estrus cycle and ovulation time in anatolian shepherd dogs

        ( Kemal Tuna Olgac ),( Ergun Akcay ),( Beste Cil ),( Burak Mehmet Ucar ),( Ali Daskın ) 한국축산학회(구 한국동물자원과학회) 2017 한국축산학회지 Vol.59 No.10

Background: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of thermographic monitoring, using the temperature changes of perianal and perivulvar areas for the determination of estrus in Anatolian Shepherd bitches. Fifteen bitches were used in the study. Blood and vaginal smear samples were collected and thermographic monitoring of perianal and perivulvar areas were carried out starting from proestrus to early diestrus. Also, external signs of estrus were investigated. Smear samples were evaluated by light microscopy after Diff-Quik staining method and superficial and keratinized superficial cells were determined as percentage (S + KS%). Progesterone and luteinizing hormone measurements were done by radioimmunoassay. The difference in temperature between perianal and perivulvar areas was evaluated through thermographic images by FLIR ResearchIR Software. Results: According to the results obtained from the study, differences between progesterone and S + KS% were statistically significant (P < 0,05). Although temperature showed increase and decrease with progesterone and S + KS%, the differences were not important statistically (P > 0,05). Serum luteinizing hormone levels did not sign any difference (P > 0,05). Conclusions: As a result, thermographic monitoring alone is not enough for estrus detection in Anatolian Shepherd bitches. However, it can be used to assist the actual estrus detection technique in terms of providing some foreknowledge by evaluating the differences in temperature

Correlation between SERT polymorphisms and Venlafaxine response in major depression patients

        Nevzat Yuksel,Ozlem Dogan,Mehmet Ali Ergun,Hatice Ersin Karslioglu,Aysegul Koc,Akin Yilmaz,Mustafa N. Ilhan,Adnan Menevse 한국유전학회 2010 Genes & Genomics Vol.32 No.3

Major depression (MD) has a complex multifactorial aetiology with genetic and environmental factors contributing to this disorder. As with all antidepressant treatments, there is variability in drug response because of heredity, and this leads us to focus on the genetic polymorphism of the drug's metabolising transporter genes. The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene is a particularly important candidate for genetic involvement in MD disorders owing to its key role in the regulation of serotonergic transmission and is therefore considered an interesting candidate in the mechanism of antidepressant drugs. Here, we studied the associations between genetic polymorphisms in two regions of the 5-HTT gene (5-HTTLPR and VNTR) to understand venlafaxine response. Venlafaxine was found to be effective in MD patients based on their HAM-D and CGI scores (p<0.05). Although the results did not yield a significant difference between the frequencies of the SS, LS,LL, 9/9, 10/10, 12/12 and 10/12 genotypes and venlafaxine response, venlafaxine dose was increased in patients with Stin2.12 and S alleles. These alleles might have a predisposition to mood disorders. Further studies with more patients are required to confirm this clinical association.

Ultimate COVID-19 Detection Protocol Based on Saliva Sampling and qRT-PCR with Risk Probability Assessment

        원종하,Hasan Hüseyin Kazan,권재,박명선,Mehmet Ali Ergun,Sureyya Ozcan,최병윤,허원도,이창준 한국뇌신경과학회 2021 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.30 No.1

In the era of COVID-19 outbreak, various efforts are undertaken to develop a quick, easy, inexpensive, and accurate way for diagnosis. Although many commercial diagnostic kits are available, detailed scientific evaluation is lacking, making the public vulnerable to fear of false-positive results. Moreover, current tissue sampling method from respiratory tract requires personal contact of medical staff with a potential asymptomatic SARSCOV-2 carrier and calls for safe and less invasive sampling method. Here, we have developed a convenient detection protocol for SARS-COV-2 based on a non-invasive saliva self-sampling method by extending our previous studies on development of a laboratory-safe and low-cost detection protocol based on qRT-PCR. We tested and compared various self-sampling methods of self-pharyngeal swab and self-saliva sampling from non-carrier volunteers. We found that the self-saliva sampling procedure gave expected negative results from all of the non-carrier volunteers within 2 hours, indicating cost-effectiveness, speed and reliability of the saliva-based method. For an automated assessment of the sampling quality and degree of positivity for COVID-19, we developed scalable formulae based on a logistic classification model using both cycle threshold and melting temperature from the qRT-PCR results. Our newly developed protocol will allow easy sampling and spatial-separation between patient and experimenter for guaranteed safety. Furthermore, our newly established risk assessment formula can be applied to a large-scale diagnosis in health institutions and agencies around the world.
