        Implementation Options and Economics of Phased UMTS Deployment

        3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) is defining UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) releases which span the transition from GSM/UMTS coexistence to All-IP UMTS networks. The deployment of an UMTS network depends, in the first place, on the intended service offerings and the release an operator chooses to start service with. Other key decisions in-fluencing UMTS deployment relate to the timing of the functional enhancements and capacity increases along the economic life of the network. This paper gives an overview on the architectural and technical options for UMTS deployment. It also outlines the methodology underlying the business plan aimed at estimating the returns from investments in the UMTS infrastructure, thus helping to tune operators’ strategies for UMTS deployment.

        Meeting the unmet: from traditional to cutting‑edge techniques for poly lactide and poly lactide‑co‑glycolide microparticle manufacturing

        Background Polylactides (PLA) and poly lactide-co-glycolides (PLGA) undoubtedly are among the major drivers in the pharmaceutical market. Their relevance in pharmaceutics and biomedicine is well established in light of their sustainability, safety, tunable biodegradability, and versatility. However, polymer degradability and plasticity can somehow restrain industrial developability of PLA and PLGA formulations, especially in the form of microparticles (MP). Area covered This review wants to deal with the known manufacturing issues of PLA/PLGA MP, debating the potential contribution of modern and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to the solution of unmet production needs. Technological and regulatory aspects will be considered outlining the potential role of advanced manufacturing techniques in the advancement of PLA/PLGA MP production processes. Expert opinion The multifaceted complexity of PLA/PLGA MP manufacturing processes demands adequate standardization and updated guidelines covering the so far unmet industrialization requirements. Novel and evolving manufacturing technologies will surely support the future development of bench-to-production plant transfer for such products. Careful evaluation of production costs is demanded in order to ensure process sustainability and patient’s outreach.

        Oleuropein Prevents Azoxymethane-Induced Colon Crypt Dysplasia and Leukocytes DNA Damage in A/J Mice

        Previous studies have shown that the precursor of olive oil secoiridoids, Oleuropein (OL) has several in vitro chemopreventive properties. OL inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in breast, thyroid, prostate, and colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. Much less is known about the effects of OL on animal models of carcinogenesis. In this study, we investigated the ability of OL to prevent the azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colon cancer upset and DNA damage in mice. Animals, fed with a basal diet either enriched or not with OL (125 mg/kg), were injected with AOM (10 mg/kg, once a week for 6 weeks) and sacrificed after either 7 weeks for histological analysis of colon crypt dysplasia and evaluation of DNA damage in leukocytes or 17 weeks for counting the macroscopically observable colon tumors. An OL-enriched diet prevented the AOM-induced preneoplastic lesions in different colon segments, reducing the severity of crypt dysplasia and DNA damage in peripheral leukocytes. In addition, OL significantly reduced the AOM-induced tumor incidence from 57% to 14% (P < .05, chi-square test) in the medial colon segment. This study shows that OL is able to prevent CRC and DNA damage in mice treated with the carcinogen AOM. These results stimulate further human cancer prevention studies with OL-enriched food supplements that are actually available on the market.
