Synopsis: The Wolff Parkinson White syndrome and mitral stenosis (MS) is a unfortunate combination, with less than 15 patients reported in literature. They are individually associated with supraventricular arrhythmias and their combination may have profound hemodynamic consequences. Our case is a young male presenting with neurologic deficits who was newly diagnosed with the WPW syndrome and mitral stenosis. Case: A 25 year old male sought consult syncope, palpitations, and dizziness. On the day of admission, he experienced persistent palpitations then subsequently lost consciousness. He had a diastolic rumble, right sided hemiparesis, and dysarthria. A cranial CT scan revealed a left basal ganglia infarction. Electrocardiogram showed sinus rhythm and left atrial enlargement, a short PR interval, wide QRS complexes, and delta waves. Holter monitoring showed episodes of atrial fl utter with rapid ventricular rates. QRS complexes were narrow during other episodes of tachycardia. Echocardiogram revealed moderate mitral stenosis and a dilated LA with no thrombus. Diagnosis was WPW syndrome and rheumatic MS manifesting as a stroke in the young. Percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy (PTMC) was done. He is now on regular follow up on chronic anticoagulation and medical therapy for the WPW syndrome. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the fi rst case of a WPW syndrome with rheumatic MS presenting as a stroke in the young who was successfully managed with PTMC for MS and anti-arhrythmics for the WPW syndrome. This unfortunate combination may have potentiated the risk for cardioembolic events which emphasizes that detection of these entities is of paramount importance. Though either of the two entities may have caused the stroke, treatment is warranted for both entities as to avoid future episodes of cardioembolic phenomena.
Dual component bi-layer electrospun nanofiber membrane for multiple phase liquid separation
( Arni Gesselle Manalo ),김헌 한국공업화학회 2019 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2019 No.1
Materials with selective interfacial activity dominates the industrial and environmental liquid separation application. Existing liquid separation techniques are influenced by chemical and physical modification to tune the membranes’ surface energy. Herein we demonstrate a new separating material influenced by the concept of using liquid to oppose immiscible contacting liquid, a liquid infused electrospun dual-component bilayer nanofiber membrane (DCNM) was scrutinized. A uniform over layer interface was established to repel other immiscible liquids. The DCNM was fabricated by electrospinning hydrophobic polymer polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDFhfp) on top of the electrospun hydrophilic polymer polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The thickness of each layer was varied and by varying the polymer deposition of the DCNM. The property of the infused liquid was used to regulate the membrane’s interface wettability which is a viable characteristic for multiphase liquid separation.

With a rampant discharge of oily wastewater from industrial and domestic sources, as well as the frequent oil spills embarked a severe environmental impact. With the goal to address this dilemma, oil water separation technology has attracted great attention. One of these resolutions is oil water separation with janus surface properties that can be conveyed on both water in oil and oil in water emulsions. With the aim to design a facile oil water phase separation a nanofiber fabricated by electrospinning and subsequent interfacial polymerization of Polyamide on the hydrophilic side of the membrane. The janus nanofiber membrane architecture were designed by taking advantage on the hydrophilic property of polyamide and hydrophobic property of the electrospun polymer. The designed nanofiber is scrutinized in different oil water emulsion conditions to test its asymmetric wettability properties.
Development of porous nanofiber membrane with CNT core for an excellent caffeine removal
( Arni Gesselle Manalo ),김헌 한국공업화학회 2019 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2019 No.1
This study describes the removal of caffeine by means of simple filtration with a porous nanofiber membrane prepared through facile electrospinning method. Carbon based materials were widely utilized for various adsorption applications due to its properties. The membranes were generated by dual spinning set-up having the funtionalized CNT as the inside core and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the outer layer of the fiber, while PVP serves as a porogen to obtain the porous structure. The generated porous network was controlled by the variation of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) content in the PAN solution. The increased adsorbing contact of the CNT core nanofibers were provided by the transmission paths due to the porous network. The effectiveness of the fabricated membrane on caffeine removal through simple filtration was defined. Thereby, we believe that this research may offer a simple and effective way to on caffeine removal.
Sustainability Issues in Juvenile Fishing in the Philippines
Niño Alejandro Q. Manalo,Paul Joseph B. Ramirez 한국무역연구원 2011 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.7 No.2
The study examines the problem of juvenile fishing as applied to anchovies, sardines, siganids (rabbitfish), and tuna fisheries in the Philippines and discusses the issues revolving around the sustainability of such fisheries in the long run. Results of the study showed that overfishing has resulted in the overexploitation of adult anchovies, sardines, rabbitfish, and tuna, and that juvenile fishing exacerbates the problem. The Philippines already has an enabling law that promotes the protection and conservation of Philippine fisheries resources. The provisions of the 1998 Philippine Fisheries Code range from regulating mesh sizes and types of fishing gear used to the establishment of marine protected areas and closed fishing seasons. Like any piece of legislation, enforcement accompanied by community stakeholder participation is crucial in achieving the sustainability of fisheries resources in the long term.
