      • Chinese Reception of Emily Dickinson's Poetry

Luo, Wei Wen 경상대학교 대학원 2011 국내석사

        RANK : 231999

Emily Dickinson, often regarded as a precursor of modern poetry, is a canonical voice in the history of North American poetry. The appreciation of her works has a relatively short history in China, however, where scholars hadn’t take much interest in her until the 1980s. Over the thirty year time period since then, in testimony to her importance as a representative American poet, Chinese scholars have published more than two thousand essays on Dickinson in academic journals in China. My thesis’ main purpose is to overview Chinese reception of Emily Dickinson and to describe how Chinese studies of Dickinson have been carried out in terms of the analysis of her poetic imagery, the appreciation of her modernity, the illumination of her poetic borrowings, and the comparative poetic study between her and Chinese female poets.

The ability to precisely control the interactions between mammalian cells and materials at the molecular level is crucial to understanding the fundamental chemical nature of how the local environment influences cellular behavior, as well as for developing new biomaterials for a range of biotechnological and tissue engineering applications. In this work, we have developed a quantitative electroactive microarray strategy that can present a variety of ligands with precise control over ligand density on gold substrates to study cell adhesion and stem cell differentiation. We found that both the ligand composition and ligand density influence the rate of adipogenic differentiation from hMSCs. We also incorporated a simple microcontact printing technique to pattern cells on gold substrates to study how the cell population, surface adhesion area, and pattern geometry combine to influence stem cell differentiation. Furthermore, we transferred our sophisticated chemoselective immobilization strategy onto different materials including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), indium tin oxide (ITO), and gold nanorods. These tailored materials provide great platforms for studying the surface effects on cellular behaviors such as cell adhesion, migration and stem cell differentiation.

This dissertation studies the integration of material and financial flows in supply chains, with the goal of examining the impact of cash flows on the individual firm's decision making and the overall supply chain efficiency. We develop analytical models to provide effective policy recommendations and derive managerial insights. We first consider a credit-constrained firm that orders inventory to satisfy stochastic demand in a finite horizon. The firm provides trade credit to the customer and receives it from the supplier. A default penalty is incurred on the unfulfilled payment to the supplier. We utilize an accounting concept of working capital to obtain optimal and near-optimal inventory policies. The model enables us to suggest an acceptable purchasing price offered in the supplier's trade credit contract, and to demonstrate how liquidity provision can mitigate the bullwhip effect. We then study a joint inventory and cash management problem for a multi-divisional supply chain. We consider different levels of cash concentration: cash pooling and transfer pricing. We develop the optimal joint inventory replenishment and cash retention policy for the cash pooling model, and construct cost lower bounds for the transfer pricing model. The comparison between these two models shows the value of cash pooling, although a big portion of this benefit may be recovered through optimal transfer pricing schemes. Finally, we build a supply chain model to investigate the material flow variability without cash constraint. Our analytical results provide conditions under which the material bullwhip effect exists. These results can be extended to explain the similar effect when financial flows are involved. In sum, this dissertation demonstrates the importance of working capital and financial integration in supply chain management.

      • The Replication and Internalization of Misogyny : An analysis of Asian mother images in American mother-daughter relationship films

Luo Wei 고려대학교 대학원 2024 국내석사

        RANK : 231983

Asian mother-daughter relationship films hit in 2022. It helps people's attention on Asian representation in Hollywood shift to the narrations of Asian families. As early as 1993, The Joy Luck Club has tied the intergenerational collision to the complex mother-daughter relationship. For decades, the contradiction in Asian mother-daughter relationships has been used repeatedly in the portrayal of Asian mothers. Immigrant women are once again at the centre of the narrative, and the reconfiguration of Asian women's representation is breathtaking. However, the productive participation of women and the emphasis on the Asian "Tiger Mother" stereotype in the film point to invisible misogyny encoding and internalized sexism. This again symbolizes the absence and distortion of representation. In the name of love, the demonized mother is "empowered" to become an agent of patriarchy, helping maintain systematic oppression. Misogyny is transmitted in the projection of the mother to the daughter. Motherhood is judged in the narrative of Asian women, suggesting the construction of a new "motherhood penalty." The intersection of gender, age, race, language and other factors for immigrant women requires discussion in the context of colonialism. Moreover, almost all Asian mother-daughter relationship films try to cover up the trap of representation with the final reconciliation. With the popularity of film, the hidden misogyny is widely tacitly accepted and applied. The purpose of this study is to examine and challenge the hidden misogynistic encodings and to clarify the reproduction and persistence of stereotypes in Asian mother-daughter relationship films. In this way, the researcher aims to reveal the new dilemma the maternal narrative brings to Asian women and help immigrant women recognize and perceive identity and oppression clearly. To this end, this study explores and summarizes the evolution of the Asian mother image. With discourse analysis and narrative analysis as the primary research methods, this paper analyses The Joy Luck Club(1993), Everything Everywhere All at Once(2022) and Turning Red(2022). The results show that in these films, the historical images of Asian women being overly sexualized and objectified are removed, and the overly controlled and strict "tiger mother" image is strengthened. Based on the monotonous and repetitive family narrative, the image of an Asian mother is alienated. Under the cover of empowerment, Asian women promote patriarchal gender domestication. Misogyny is replicated, sexism is internalized, and patriarchy fundamentally creates the "shadow of love."
