Hybrid ARQ-Based Fairness Enhancement in Uplink WLAN

<P>Per-station fairness is one of the important and challenging issues in wireless local area network based on a contention-based medium access control protocol. The unfairness problem among stations having different channel qualities is caused by the imbalance in access probability and outage probability among them. In this paper, we investigate the per-station fairness by resolving the imbalance in the above two factors through the enhanced distributed coordination function (DCF) adopting hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), named the DCF-H. We suggest adopting the HARQ with Chase combining as a solution for the imbalance in the outage probability on top of the loss differentiation mechanism which resolves the imbalance in the access probability. We also analyze the performance of the DCF-H by proposing a new Markov chain model and derive a closed-form expression of system throughput, delay, and outage probability. We compare the performance of the DCF-H with that of the conventional DCF protocols and find out that the DCF-H not only guarantees the near-perfect per-station fairness but also improves the whole system performance, such as throughput, delay, and outage probability.</P>

Allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis are heterogeneous diseases characterized by multiple symptoms and phenotypes. Recent advancements in genetic study enabled us to identify disease associated genetic factors. Numerous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed multiple associated loci for allergic diseases. However, the majority of previous studies have been conducted in populations of European ancestry. Moreover, the associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with allergic diseases have not been studied amongst the large-scale general Korean population. Herein, we performed the replication study to validate the previous variants, known to be associated with allergic diseases, in the Korean population. In this study, we categorized three allergic related phenotypes, one allergy and two asthma related phenotypes, based on self-reports of physician diagnosis and their symptoms from 8,842 samples. As a result, we found nominally significant associations of 6 SNPs with at least one allergic related phenotype in the Korean population. [BMB reports 2012; 45(5): 305-310]

<P>Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) uses an antibody labeled with a radionuclide to deliver cytotoxic radiation to a target tumor cells. Radioiodine is most commonly employed to prepare radiolabeled proteins (antibodies, peptides) for <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> applications. A major shortcoming of radioiodinated proteins prepared by direct labeling methods is their deiodination <I>in vivo</I>. For the preparation of more stable radioiodinated antibodies, we developed a new linker (N-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-2-(3-(tributylstannyl)phenyl) acetamide (IBPA). This study evaluated the usefulness of IBPA as a linker for the stable radioiodinated internalizing antibody, cetuximab. Directly labeled cetuximab ([<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab) was prepared by the chloramine T method. To prepare indirectly labeled cetuximab using IBPA ([<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab), IBPA was radioiodinated using chloramine-T to give N-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-2-(3-[<SUP>125</SUP>I]phenyl)acetamide ([<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA), which was purified by high performance liquid chromatography. [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA was then conjugated to cetuximab. <I>In vitro</I> target binding and internalizing assays were performed in PC9, LS174T, and FaDu cell lines. <I>In vivo</I> planar images were obtained using an Inveon SPECT scanner 3, 24, 48, and 168 h after i.v. injection of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab or [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab in athymic mice bearing LS174T tumor xenografts. Specific binding and internalized radioactivity of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab were higher than those of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab in PC9, LS174T, and FaDu cell lines. In planar images scant radioactivity was evident in thyroid glands after injection of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab, while a high level of radioactivity was present in thyroid glands after injection of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab. Tumor uptake value of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab was higher than that of [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-cetuximab for up to 168 h. [<SUP>125</SUP>I]-IBPA-cetuximab is stable and resistant to deiodination <I>in vivo</I>. IBPA is a promising bi-functional linker for radioiodination of internalizing monoclonal antibodies for <I>in vivo</I> applications including radioimmunotherapy.</P>
ESHAP Salvage Therapy for Refractory and Relapsed Non-Hodgkin`s Lymphoma: A Single Center Experience

Background: The ESHAP chemotherapy regimen, that is, the combination of the etoposide, methylprednisolone, high-dose cytarabine and cisplatin, has been shown to be active against relapsing or refractory non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma (NHL) in previous therapeutic trials. We attempted to determine whether ESHAP therapy would be effective and well-tolerated in Korean patients. Methods: Twenty two patients with refractory or relapsed NHLs (all aggressive types) were enrolled in this study. We retrospectively evaluated the treatment response, the survival rate and the time to progression. Results: Six patients (27.3%) attained complete remission and eight patients (36.4%) attained partial remission. The overall response rate was 63.6%. The median survival duration was 15.5 months (95% confidence interval; 10.7 to 20.3 months), and the median duration of the time to progression was 8.3 months (95% confidence interval; 0.3 to 16.3 months). Myelosuppression was the major toxicity, but severe neutropenia or thrombocytopenia was rare, and renal toxicity was also infrequent. Conclusions: ESHAP regimen is effective in Korean patients suffering with relapsed or refractory NHLs, but a more effective salvage modality is needed because of the short duration of remission and the insignificant impact on long-term survival.
A chiral indolocarbazole foldamer displaying strong circular dichroism responsive to anion binding

<P>A chiral foldamer that consists of three indolocarbazoles and chiral amide residues folds into a helical conformation with the orientation bias, thus displaying characteristic CD signals. It is not clear whether Ca<SUP>2</SUP>-induced Ca<SUP>2</SUP> release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is involved in the regulation of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) release. Previously, we have shown that nifedipine increased ANP release, indicating that Ca<SUP>2</SUP> entry via voltage-gated L-type Ca<SUP>2</SUP> channel activation decreases ANP release. The purpose of the present study was two-fold: to define the role of SR Ca<SUP>2</SUP> release in the regulation of ANP release and whether Ca<SUP>2</SUP> entry via L-type Ca<SUP>2</SUP> channel is prerequisite for the SR-related effect on ANP release. Experiments were performed in perfused beating rabbit atria. Ryanodine, an inhibitor of SR Ca<SUP>2</SUP> release, increased atrial myocytic ANP release (8.69⁑3.05, 19.55⁑1.09, 27.31⁑3.51, and 18.91⁑4.76% for 1, 2, 3, and 6μM ryanodine, respectively; all P<0.01) with concomitant decrease in atrial stroke volume and pulse pressure in a dose-dependent manner. In the presence of thapsigargin, an inhibitor of SR Ca<SUP>2</SUP> pump, ryanodine-induced increase in ANP release was not observed. Thapsigargin attenuated ryanodine-induced decrease in atrial dynamic changes. Blockade of L-type Ca<SUP>2</SUP> channel with nifedipine abolished ryanodine-induced increase in ANP release (0.69⁑5.58% vs. 27.31⁑3.51%; P<0.001). In the presence of thapsigargin and ryanodine, nifedipine increased ANP release and decreased atrial dynamics. These data suggest that Ca<SUP>2</SUP>-induced Ca<SUP>2</SUP> release from the SR is inversely involved in the regulation of atrial myocytic ANP release.
Adaptive Reconfigurable Flight Control System Based on Recursive System Identification

An adaptive reconfigurable control algorithm is proposed for fault aircraft tolerant control. An input-output model is derived from a discrete state-space model. The formulated model has the same structure as the ARX model, and therefore any recursive system identification method can be used. Model following control schemes are applied for reconfigurable control system design. The reference outputs for the system to be followed are generated via the linear optimal control theory. During the recursive adaptive control process, the reference system model is updated periodically. The proposed algorithm is very robust and applicable on real time. To validate the proposed adaptive fault tolerant control algorithm, numerical simulation is performed.
