It is said that we are living in an information-oriented society. The concept of this society which requires advanced information is also applied to medical field and thus such areas as financial sector in the hospitals have been automated in these days. The computerization of dental area is being done gradully. The purpose of this study is to provide basic information for the computerization of dental area. For this study, the questionnaires were given dental hygienists working for dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul. Those were analyzed the statistics package spss, yielding frequency, percentage t-test, oneway ANOVA, pearson correlation and stepwise multiple regression. The results of this analysis are as follows: 1. The all of the respondents had the experiences of computer usuage and the 35.3% of them had been educated on the computer. The 58.8% of them wanted to get computer education and the 51.0% of discomforted the computerization dental clinics. 2. The mean of dental hygienist' attitudes toward computer was 52.08. From the view point of dental management, the more the benefit for computerization, the more positive the attitudes toward computer. (t=1.67 p<0.05) 3. The elements which influences dental hygienist' attitude toward computer were the benefit for computerization of dental clinics and changes of working time. (t=3.80 p<0.01) Considering the above results, we could conclude that the dental hygienist has positive attitude for the computerization in dental clinics. The computer education for dental hygienist is inevitable to move their attitude positively on computer, especially the education with hands-on experiences is required.

Association between maternal exposure to major phthalates, heavy metals, and persistent organic pollutants, and the neurodevelopmental performances of their children at 1 to 2years of age- CHECK cohort study

        Kim, Sunmi,Eom, Soyong,Kim, Hai-Joong,Lee, Jeong Jae,Choi, Gyuyeon,Choi, Sooran,Kim, Sungjoo,Kim, Su Young,Cho, Geumjoon,Kim, Young Don,Suh, Eunsook,Kim, Sung Koo,Kim, Seunghyo,Kim, Gun-Ha,Moon, Hyo-B Elsevier 2018 Science of the Total Environment Vol.624 No.-

Abstract

Exposure of the developing fetus and infants to toxic substances can cause serious lifelong health consequences. Several chemicals have been associated with adverse neurodevelopmental disorders in the early life stages of humans. However, most epidemiological studies have focused on a limited number of chemicals, and hence may exclude important chemicals from consideration or result in conclusions built on associations by chance. In the present study, we investigated the chemical exposure profile of the women, and associated these with the early neurodevelopmental performance of their offspring at 13–24months of age. The chemicals assessed include four phthalates, bisphenol A, three heavy metals, 19 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 19 organochlorine pesticides, and 19 polybrominated diphenyl ethers, which were measured from urine, whole blood, serum, and/or breastmilk of the pregnant or lactating women. For neurodevelopmental performance, the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II (BSID-II), Social Maturity Scale (SMS), and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were measured from a total of 140 toddlers. Among the measured chemicals, monoethyl phthalate (MEP) in maternal urine was significantly associated with early mental, psychomotor, and social development. In addition, breast milk di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) metabolite and blood lead concentrations were inversely associated with mental and psychomotor development indices, respectively. Maternal blood PCB153, heavy metals, and urinary MEP levels were also higher among the children with behavioral problems, as indicated by the CBCL range. Taken together, maternal exposure to several EDCs such as PCBs and DEHP was associated with adverse neurodevelopmental performances among the children aged 1–2years. Confirmation of these association in larger populations, as well as longer-term consequences of such exposure warrant further investigation.

Highlights

Prenatal Hg, Pb, BPA, or DEP exposures were associated with neurodevelopmental delay.

DEHP exposure through lactation showed negative association with mental index.

Prenatal Hg, DEP, or PCB exposures showed positive associations on CBCL scores.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

      • Urinary phthalate metabolites over the first 15months of life and risk assessment – CHECK cohort study

        Kim, Sunmi,Lee, Jangwoo,Park, Jeongim,Kim, Hai-Joong,Cho, Geum Joon,Kim, Gun-Ha,Eun, So-Hee,Lee, Jeong Jae,Choi, Gyuyeon,Suh, Eunsook,Choi, Sooran,Kim, Sungjoo,Kim, Sung Koo,Kim, Young Don,Kim, Su You Elsevier 2017 The Science of the total environment Vol.607 No.-

Abstract

Phthalates are important group of endocrine disruptors. Infants and young children are susceptible to phthalate exposure. However, information on the phthalate exposure during the early stages of life is very limited. This study was conducted to understand the temporal trend of exposure to major phthalates among infants of Korea during the first 15months after birth, and to estimate associated risks. A total of 286 urine samples were collected from 171 children at 3, 9, 12, or 15months of age, with 77 children sampled for two or more times. Four phthalates, i.e., di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and diethyl phthalate (DEP) were chosen, and their major metabolites were analyzed in the urine. The DEHP metabolites were detected in 100% of the urine samples at relatively higher levels compared to those reported in other countries. The levels of mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP) were generally lower. Urinary concentrations of most phthalate metabolites, especially DEHP metabolites, increased as children grew older. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) calculated for DEHP metabolites over time were high (0.7–0.8), suggesting persistence of consistent exposure sources during this sensitive period of life. Hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were calculated from daily intake estimates divided by recommended toxicity thresholds. Among the study population, 4, 16, and 26% of the children showed HI >1 at 9, 12, and 15months of age, respectively. DEHP exposure explained most of the risk estimates. Considering vulnerability of young children to endocrine disruption, efforts to identify sources of exposure and to develop appropriate mitigation options are warranted.

Highlights

Multiple urines were collected at 3, 9, 12, or 15months of age from 171 children.

High intra-individual correlation and age-dependent increase were observed.

Up to 26% of children showed hazard index >1 by exposure to target phthalates.

Estimated risks are mostly due to the exposure to DEHP and DnBP.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

        Kim, Jin Hee,Park, Hyunkyung,Lee, Jangwoo,Cho, Geumjoon,Choi, Sooran,Choi, Gyuyeon,Kim, Su Young,Eun, So-Hee,Suh, Eunsook,Kim, Sung Koo,Kim, Hai-Joong,Kim, Gun-Ha,Lee, Jeong Jae,Kim, Young Don,Eom, So BMJ Publishing Group 2016 Journal of epidemiology & community health Vol.70 No.5

Background

Several studies have suggested potential links of phthalates to obesity in children and adults. Limited evidence, however, has been available for the relations between diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and obesity-related markers or body mass change in early life.

Methods

128 healthy pregnant women were recruited and, after delivery, their newborns’ first urine and umbilical cord blood samples were collected. We measured urinary levels of two DEHP metabolites, mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP) and mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP). We also measured the levels of leptin, total cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) in cord serum, and used them along with weight, length, head circumference and ponderal index (PI, 100 g/cm3) at birth, as obesity-related markers, and estimated the relations between DEHP metabolites and obesity-related markers using generalised linear models. For the evaluation of body mass increase by early life DEHP exposure, body mass index (BMI) z-score change during 3 months after birth by DEHP metabolites in the first urine samples of the newborns were evaluated using logistic regression.

Results

DEHP exposure was associated with decrease of PI and increase of TG (PI, β=−0.11, p=0.070 and TG, β=0.14, p=0.027), especially for boys (PI, β=−0.13, p=0.021; and TG, β=0.19, p=0.025). Moreover, DEHP exposure was positively associated with body mass increase during 3 months after birth (change of BMI z-scores, OR=4.35, p=0.025).

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that DEHP exposure may affect body mass change in early life through changes of obesity-related markers.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is such that, the socio-cultural attitude towards appearance and the effect of medical skin care customer behaviors’ intention were analyzed, and the effect of medical skin care involvement and the appearance related quality of life sequentially was studied, while the basic data was presented for stra-tegic counseling and promotional marketing expansion of medical skin care according to socio-cultural attitude towards appearance and customer behaviors’ intention. Method: In this study, a statistical analysis was performed by using the SPSS 25.0 and PROCESS macro for SPSS programs as an empirical analytical method for 507 copies through an online questionnaire in the Seoul metro-politan area targeting men and women in their 20s and 60s, and the independent sample t-test was used to confirm the difference among the major variables according to gender, and the model 6 analysis was performed by using the SPSS Process Macro to verify the research model. Results: In terms of the results of this study, first, as a result of confirming the differences among the major variables according to gender, significant differences were found in the socio-cultural attitude towards appear-ance, appearance related quality of life, and the customer behaviors’ intention. The socio-cultural attitude to-wards appearance did not directly affect the customer behaviors’ intention, but a high extent of medical skin care involvement increased appearance related quality of life and affected the customer behaviors’ intention where the sequential mediating effect was found, and in terms of the difference between male and female pathways, it was found that the higher the quality of life related to appearance, the higher the customer behaviors’ intention. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, women with high skin care behavior according to the socio-cultural attitude and aesthetic desire and men with a weakened relationship between quality of life and customer behaviors’ intention were appropriate for the intention to purchase according to their appearance, depending on gender, and from a positive point of view, it is necessary to approach the counseling services and marketing that can increase the intention to purchase through the external beauty. The increase in the appearance related qual-ity of life according to the extent of medical skin care involvement affects the customer behaviors’ intention, which provides the service information that can promote a stable life and provides self-care through the various beauty lifestyles through the skin care, and hence, it is considered that it would be necessary to provide the information that not only self-satisfaction but also the overall quality of life is affected.

Angle-dependent X-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in hybrid [CoO/Pd]2[Co/Pd]7 multilayers

Abstract

We have investigated the angle-dependent orbital and spin magnetic moments of the [Co/Pd] multilayer (ML) films with intervening CoO layers under annealing by employing angle-dependent soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). After annealing, the orbital magnetic moments of Co ions are found to be enhanced, with the maximum values along the perpendicular direction of [Co/Pd] ML, providing evidence for the origin of the improved perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) being the interface spin–orbit coupling. The induced Pd polarization was observed after annealing, demonstrating the strong Co-Pd hybridization arising from the Co-Pd alloy formation near the interface. The angle-dependent coercivity follows the 1 / cos θ behavior, suggesting that the magnetization reversal in the hysteresis curve in [Co/Pd] ML occurs mainly through the pinning mechanism.

Highlights

Angle-dependent XMCD were performed on hybrid [CoO/Pd]2[Co/Pd]7 multilayers that exhibit enhanced PMA.

The enhanced orbital magnetic moments indicates that the origin of the improved PMA is the interface spin–orbit coupling.

The induced Pd polarization after annealing demonstrates the strong Co-Pd hybridization arising from the Co-Pd alloy formation near the interface.

The angle-dependent coercivity suggests that the magnetization reversal in [Co/Pd] ML occurs mainly through the pinning mechanism.

      • Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy study of the electronic structures of the MnFe Prussian blue analogs (RbxBay)Mn[3−(x+2y)]/2[Fe(CN)6]H2O

        Lee, Eunsook,Seong, Seungho,Kim, Hyun Woo,Kim, D. H.,Thakur, Nidhi,Yusuf, S. M.,Kim, Bongjae,Min, B. I.,Kim, Younghak,Kim, J.-Y.,de Groot, F. M. F.,Kang, J.-S. American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review B Vol.96 No.19

The electronic structures of Prussian blue analog (RbxBay) Mn[3-(x+2y)]/2[Fe(CN)(6)] cyanides have been investigated by employing soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Fe and Mn L (2p) edges. The measured XAS spectra have been analyzed with the configuration-interaction (CI) cluster model calculations. The valence states of the Fe and Mn ions are found to be Fe2+-Fe3+ mixed valent, with an average valency of v(Fe) similar to 2.8 and nearly divalent (Mn2+), respectively. Our Mn/Fe 2p XMCD study supports that Mn2+ ions are in the high-spin states while Fe2+-Fe3+ ions are in the low-spin states. The Fe and Mn 2p XAS spectra are found to be essentially the same for 80 <= T <= 300 K, suggesting that a simple charge transfer upon cooling from Fe3+- CN-Mn2+ to Fe (2+)-CN-Mn3+ does not occur in (RbxBay) Mn[3-(x+2y)]/2[Fe(CN)(6)]. According to the CI cluster model analysis, it is necessary to take into account both the ligand-to-metal charge transfer and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer in describing Fe 2p XAS, while the effect of charge transfer is negligible in describing Mn 2p XAS. The CI cluster model analysis also shows that the trivalent Fe3+ ions have a strong covalent bonding with the C equivalent to N ligands and are under a large crystal-field energy of 10Dq similar to 3 eV, in contrast to the weak covalency effect and a small 10Dq similar to 0.6 eV for the divalent Mn2+ ions.
