The Taebaek Group (Cambrian-Ordovician) in theTaebaeksan Basin comprises mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sequenceand is exposed well in the Seokgaejae section located in the central-eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The group in the Seokgaejaesection consists of in ascending order the Myeonsan, Myobong, and Duwibong formations. This study describes in detail the well-exposed outcrop sections of the Taebaek Group in the SeokgaejaePass in order to refine the lithostratigraphy of the lower Paleozoicstrata in the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea. The refined lithostratigra-phy delineates clearly the lithologic boundary between the Myobongand Daegi formations, the Hwajeol and Dongjeom formations, theDumugol and Makgol formations, and the Makgol and Jigunsanformations. The preliminary information on trilobite faunal asem-blages suggests that the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary can beplaced within the lowermost part of the Dongjeom Formation.

<P> Tetrahydroisoquinoline (THI) alkaloids can be considered as cyclized derivatives of simple phenylethylamines. Many of them, especially with 6,7-disubstitution, demonstrate a relatively high affinity for catecholamines. Present study examines the pharmacological action of limited series of THI, using rats isolated atria and aorta. In addition, a [3H] prazosin displacement binding study with THI compounds was performed, using rat brain homogenates to investigate whether these probes have -adrenoceptor affinity. We also compared the vascular relaxation potency of these probes with dobutamine. YS 49, YS 51, higenamine and dobutamine, concentration-dependently, relaxed endothelium-denuded rat thoracic aorta precontracted with phenylephrine (PE, 0.1 ㄍM) in which pEC50 were 5.56⁑0.32 and 5.55⁑0.21, 5.99⁑1.16 and 5.57⁑0.34, respectively. These probes except higenamine also relaxed KCl (65.4 mM)-contracted aorta. In isolated rat atria, all THIs and dobutamine increased heart rate and contractile force. In the presence of propranolol, the concentration response curves of YS 49 and YS 51 shifted to the right and resulted in pA2 values of 8.07⁑0.84 and 7.93⁑0.11, respectively. The slope of each compound was not deviated from unity, indicating that these chemicals are highly competitive at the cardiac -adrenoceptors. YS 49, YS 51, and higenamine showed -adrenoceptor affinity in rat brain, in which the dissociation constant (Ki) was 2.75, 2.81, and 1.02 ㄍM, respectively. It is concluded, therefore, that THI alkaloids have weak affinity to 1-adrenoceptors in rat aorta and brain, respectively, while these probes show relatively high affinity for cardiac -adrenoceptors. Thus, these chemicals may be useful in the treatment of congestive heart failure.

A new black seed coat soybean cultivar, “Heugmi” was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2006. The goal to breed the black seed coat soybean is to develop the cultivar with high yield, lodging tolerance, resistant to disease such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV), and bacterial pustule and seed size. Heugmi was selected from the cross between Milyang 78, which was late maturing, susceptible to lodging and SMV and with large seed size and green cotyledon, and Milyang 68, which was middle maturing, resistant to lodging and SMV and with middle seed size and yellow cotyledon. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this cultivar were carried out from 2001 to 2006. It has determinate growth habit, purple flower, brown pubescence, black pod color, black seed coat, green cotyledon, spherical seed shape, oval leaf shape and middle seed size (24.8 grams per 100 seeds), and it was 2 days earlier in maturity than the check cultivar Cheongjakong. Heugmi was better in the seed quality of crude protein contents, sucrose and total sugar contents than the check cultivar. It also has been identified to have resistance to SMV which was the troublesome soybean diseases. The average yield of Heugmi was 2.53 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials carried out in seven locations of Korea from 2004 to 2006, which was 8 percent higher than the check cultivar Cheongjakong.

Hyoscyamine and scopolamine are two most common tropane alkaloids found in the Solanaceae. The pEB expression vector carrying Nspmt gene was transformed to Agrobacterium rhizogenes. The growth of transgenic hairy roots were approximately to 80% of the wild type root. Transgenic hairy roots are less developed on only their branch roots than those of the wild type root. The extracts from Nspmt transgenic hairy root lines, 3 and 5 contained between 3.52 and 4.23 mg/g dry weight as hyoscyamine and did between 5.23 to 6.40 mg/g dry weight as scopolamine. These results showed that the overexpression of the pmt gene enhanced tropane alkaloids production of S. parviflora transformed roots and this improvement affected both hyoscyamine and scopolamine production.

A new garden pea cultivar, Daehyup 2, was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2006. It was selected from the cross between Olwandu and Sachulwandu in 1996. The preliminary, advanced, and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this cultivar were carried out from 2003 to 2006. It has white flower, yellow cotyledon, absent or very weakly curved pod shape and yellow seed color. It was resistant to virus and powdery mildew disease. The 100 green seed weight of Daehyup 2 was 65.5 g, which was 8.9 g heavier than check cultivar. The sucrose and total sugar contents of fresh pod of Daehyup 2 were 11.1% and 12.5%, respectively, which were 3.2% and 4.3% higher than those of Sachulwandu. The fresh pod yield of Daehyup 2 was similar to that of Sachulwandu with 12.16 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials carried out in three locations of Korea from 2005 to 2006.

Optimal culture conditions for efficient in vitro propagation and polysaccharide production of Orostachys japonicus were established. O. japonicus was cultured in media containing various growth regulators and carbon sources. The highest regeneration rate was achieved in 1.0 and 3.0 mg l -1 of 2,4-D concentration, while the lowest was obtained in 10.0 mg l -1 2,4-D concentration. When different carbone sources were added in the culture medium, plant growth was high in 3% sucrose treatment. The micropropagated shoots were successfully acclimatized in artificial soils and produced comparable amont of polysaccharide compred to parent cultivated plants.
