Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a biologically active lysophospholipid that is enriched in blood, controls the trafficking of osteoclast precursors between the circula-tion and bone marrow cavities via G protein-coupled receptors, S1PRs. While S1PR1 mediates chemoattraction toward S1P in bone marrow, where S1P concentration is low, S1PR2 mediates chemorepulsion in blood, where the S1P concentration is high. The regulation of precursor recruitment may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for controlling osteoclast-dependent bone remodeling. Through intravital multiphoton imaging of bone tissues, we reveal that the bidirectional function of S1P temporospatially regulates the migration of osteoclast precursors within intact bone tissues. Imaging technologies have enabled in situ visualization of the behaviors of several players in intact tissues. In addition, intravital microscopy has the potential to be more widely applied to functional analysis and intervention.
Polyimides Containing Benzoxazole Units and Their Liquid-Crystalline Behavior

Herein, we report the liquid-crystalline behavior of polyimides (PIs) containing benzoxazole (BO) units and their model compounds, and provide fundamental information in relation to their potential as heat-releasing materials. A series of BO-containing tetracarboxylic dianhydrides were synthesized using two bis(oaminophenol) s as starting materials, namely, 3,3′-dihydroxy-4,4′-diaminobiphenyl (p-HAB) and 4,6-diaminoresorcinol (DAR). When a p-HAB-type BO-containing tetracarboxylic dianhydride with ester linkages was combined with a siloxanediamine (amine equivalent: 430 g/mol), the resulting PI barely exhibited optical anisotropy with an unclear and undeveloped texture with the assistance of continuous shear stimulus. On the other hand, the combination of DAR-type BO-containing tetracarboxylic dianhydride with ester linkages and the siloxanediamine led to the formation of an optically anisotropic texture with particle-like domains in the heating process over a wide temperature range, although continuous shear stimulus in the molten state was still required for this system. The thermal diffusivity of BOcontaining PI films quenched from their liquid-crystalline states is also reported.

Background: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is the standard technique for diagnosis of patients presenting with upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Some reports have shown high prevalence of esophageal cancer in the northern part of Afghanistan. The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiological profile of esophageal cancer among patients in this region. Materials and Methods: We identified 364 consecutive patients that received EGD examinations to examine upper gastrointestinal tract at the endoscopy unit of Balkh regional Hospital from March 2012 to March 2013. The case subjects included both in-patients and out-patients aged 16 years or more. We evaluated the results retrospectively. Results: The cases consisted of 184 (51%) males and 180 (49%) females. The mean age was $47.3{\pm}17.8$ and the age range 17-88 years. Ninety two cases had esophageal cancer, out of which 58 (63.0%) were male. The mean age at time of diagnosis was $57.8{\pm}13.2years$. Uzbek-Turkmen peoples were more common among patients with esophageal cancer (52.2%). Dysphagia was the most frequent symptom among patients with esophageal cancer at the time of presentation, seen in 77 (84.8%) of cases. Conclusions: Our results showed high incidence of esophageal cancer in the northern part of Afghanistan, especially in the Uzbek-Turkmen ethnic group.
