<P>The first total synthesis of (−)-dendroside C aglycon, consisting of a 1,4,5-tri-<I>cis</I>-guaiane skeleton, from a versatile hydroazulene intermediate has been accomplished. Impact of ionic liquid treatment on willow biomass toward acid hydrolysis was investigated with comparison between untreated and ionic liquid treated willow woodmeal. At lower 2nd hydrolysis temperature condition, more xylose and glucose was produced by ionic liquid treated woodmeal. Higher 2nd hydrolysis temperature led to more generation of furfural and formic acid, which is suspicious as fermentation inhibitors at acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation. For alcohol production from acid hydrolysates of wood, relatvie lower 2nd hydrolysis conditions are important to control for the formic acid and furfural.
