      • Decomposing economic disparities in risky sexual behaviors among people who inject drugs in Tehran:

        OBJECTIVES: To our knowledge, no previous study has systematically assessed the role of economic status in risky sexual behavior among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Iran. In this study, we used Blinder-Oaxaca (BO) decomposition to explore the contribution of economic status to inequality in unprotected sex among PWID in Tehran and to decompose it into its determinants. METHODS: Behavioral surveys among PWID were conducted in Tehran, the capital city of Iran, from November 2016 to April 2017. We employed a cross-sectional design and snowball sampling methodology. We constructed the asset index (weighted by the first principal component analysis factor) using socioeconomic data and then divided the variable into 3 tertiles. We used the BO method to decompose the economic inequality in unprotected sex. RESULTS: Of the 520 recruited individuals, 20 were missing data for variables used to define their economic status, and were therefore excluded from the analysis. Not having access to harm reduction programs was the largest factor contributing to the economic disparity in unprotected sex, accounting for 5.5 percentage points of the 21.4% discrepancy. Of the unadjusted total economic disparity in unprotected sex, 52% was unexplained by observable characteristics included in the regression model. The difference in the prevalence of unprotected sex between the high-income and low-income groups was 25%. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing needle syringe program coverage and improving human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) knowledge are essential for efforts to eliminate inequalities in HIV risk behaviors among PWID.

        Assessment of Iranian wheat germplasm for salinity tolerance using analysis of the membership function value of salinity tolerance (MFVS)

        In this study, 17 morphological and agronomic traits as indicators for identifying salinity tolerance genotypes in wheat were evaluated among a set of 110 different genotypes including advanced lines in breeding programs, wheat landraces collected from landraces throughout Iran, some well-known tolerant and sensitive cultivars and many commercial wheat cultivars. Plant materials were grown under non-saline (NS) and saline stress (SS) conditions (Electrical conductivity [EC] of 2 and 10 ds m -1 , respectively). The membership function value of salinity tolerance (MFVS) was used as a comprehensive index for evaluation and selection of wheat salinity tolerance. A comprehensive evaluation method, the membership function value of salinity tolerance (MFVS), which combined the salinity-tolerant coefficient (SC) of morphological and agronomic traits that could be easily estimated, was used to investigate the wheat salinity tolerance in this study. The mean value of all 17 traits decreased under saline stress condition, among the 17 traits, spike weight (SW), kernel weight per spike (KWS), number of fertile tillers (NFT), biological yield (BY) and grain yield (GY) decreased >25%. This suggested that these 5 traits were more sensitive to salinity stress. Ten genotypes with highly salinity tolerance were selected based on MFVS and could be applied for salinity tolerance improvement in wheat. Correlation analysis indicated that the wheat salinity tolerance was highly significantly and positively correlated with variations of 13 traits under both non-saline and saline stress conditions (P < 0.01). Factor analysis showed that salinity-tolerant coefficients of 5 traits of grain yield, biological yield, spike weight, kernel weight per spike and number of fertile tillers have the most interrelationships with the membership value of salinity tolerance (MFVS). Therefore, these five traits could be applied as an indicator to screen wheat germplasm for salinity tolerance in wheat breeding programs.

        A Novel Niosomal Combination of Selenium Coupled with Glucantime against Leishmania tropica

        There is no effective treatment modality available against different forms of leishmaniasis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to improve the penetration and efficacy of selenium and glucantime coupled with niosomes and compared them with their simple forms alone on in vitro susceptibility assays. In this study, the niosomal formulations of selenium and in combination with glucantime were prepared. The size and morphology of the niosomal formulations were charac- terized and the effectivity of the new formulation was also evaluated using in vitro MTT assay, intra-macrophage model, and gene expression profile. From the results obtained, no cytotoxicity effect was observed for niosomal and simple forms of drugs, as alone or in combination. Niosomal formulations of the drugs significantly showed more inhibitory ef- fects (P ≤ 0.001) than the simple drugs when the selectivity index was considered. The gene expression levels of Interleu- kin (IL-10) significantly decreased, while the level of IL-12 and metacaspase significantly increased (P ≤ 0.001). The results of the present study showed that selenium plus glucantime niosome possess a potent anti-leishmanial effect and en- hanced their lethal activity as evidenced by the in vitro experiments.

        Antileishmanial Activity of Niosomal Combination Forms of Tioxolone along with Benzoxonium Chloride against Leishmania tropica

        In this study, we carried out extensive in vitro studies on various concentrations of tioxolone along with ben- zoxonium chloride and their niosomal forms against Leishmania tropica. Niosomes were prepared by the hydration meth- od and were evaluated for morphology, size, release study, and encapsulation efficiency. This study measured leishmani- cidal activity against promastigote and amastigote, apoptosis and gene expression levels of free solution and niosomal- encapsulated tioxolone along with benzoxonium chloride. Span/Tween 60 niosome had good physical stability and high encapsulation efficiency (more than 97%). The release profile of the entrapped compound showed that a gradual release rate. The combination of niosomal forms on promastigote and amastigote were more effective than glucantime. Also, the niosomal form of this compound was significantly less toxic than glucantime (P ≤ 0.05). The flowcytometric analysis on niosomal form of drugs showed that higher number of early apoptotic event as the principal mode of action (89.13% in 200 μg/mL). Also, the niosomal compound increased the expression level of IL-12 and metacaspase genes and de- creased the expression level of the IL-10 gene, which further confirming the immunomodulatory role as the mechanism of action. We observed the synergistic effects of these 2 drugs that induced the apoptotic pathways and also up regulation of an immunomodulatory role against as the main mode of action. Also, niosomal form of this combination was safe and demonstrated strong anti-leishmaniasis effects highlights further therapeutic approaches against anthroponotic cutane- ous leishmaniasis in future planning.
