      • Experimental and numerical studies on flexural behavior of high strength concrete beams containing waste glass

        Haido, James H.,Zainalabdeen, Marwa A.,Tayeh, Bassam A. Techno-Press 2021 Advances in concrete construction Vol.11 No.3

The behavior of concrete containing waste glass as a replacement of cement or aggregate was studied previously in the most of researches, but the present investigation focuses on the recycling of waste glass powder as a substitute for silica fume in high strength concrete (HSC). This endeavor deals with the efficiency of using waste glass powder, as an alternative for silica fume, in the flexural capacity of HSC beam. Thirteen members with dimensions of 0.3 m width, 0.15 m depth and 0.9 m span length were utilized in this work. A comparison study was performed considering HSC members and hybrid beams fabricated by HSC and conventional normal concrete (CC). In addition to the experiments on the influence of glass powder on flexural behavior, numerical analysis was implemented using nonlinear finite element approach to simulate the structural performance of the beams. Same constitutive relationships were selected to model the behavior of HSC with waste glass powder or silica fume to show the matching between the modeling outputs for beams made with these powders. The results showed that the loading capacity and ductility index of the HSC beams with waste glass powder demonstrated enhancing ultimate load and ductility compared with those of HSC specimens with silica fume. The study deduced that the recycled waste glass powder is a good alternative to the pozzolanic powder of silica fume.

      • Dynamic response of reinforced concrete members incorporating steel fibers with different aspect ratios

        Haido, James H.,Abdul-Razzak, Ayad A.,Al-Tayeb, Mustafa M.,Bakar, B.H. Abu,Yousif, Salim T.,Tayeh, Bassam A. Techno-Press 2021 Advances in concrete construction Vol.11 No.2

Investigations on the dynamic behavior of concrete members, incorporating steel fibers with different aspect ratios, are limited so far and do not covered comprehensively in prior studies. Present endeavor is devoted to examine the dynamic response of the steel fibrous concrete beams and slabs under the influence of impact loading. These members were reinforced with steel fibers in different length of 25 mm and 50 mm. Four concrete mixes were designed and used based on the proportion of long and short fibers. Twenty-four slabs and beams were fabricated with respect to the concrete mix and these specimens were tested in impact load experiment. Testing observations revealed that the maximum dynamic deflection or ductility of the member can be achieved with increasing the fiber length. Structural behavior of the tested structures was predicted using nonlinear finite element analysis with specific material constitutive relationships. Eight nodes plate elements have been considered in the present dynamic analysis. Dynamic fracture energy of the members was calculated and agreement ratio, of more than 70%, was noticed between the experimental and analysis outcomes.

Identification of the most influencing parameters on the properties of corroded concrete beams using an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS)

        Mahdi Shariati,Mohammad Saeed Mafipour,James H. Haido,Salim T. Yousif,Ali Toghroli,Nguyen Thoi Trung,Ali Shariati 국제구조공학회 2020 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.34 No.1

Different parameters potentially affect the properties of corroded reinforced concrete beams. However, the high number of these parameters and their dependence cause that the effectiveness of the parameters could not be simply identified. In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was employed to determine the most influencing parameters on the properties of the corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete beams. 207 ANFIS models were developed to analyze the collected data from 107 reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The impact of 23 input parameters on nine output factors was investigated. The results of the paper showed the order of influence of each input parameter on the outputs and revealed that the input parameters regarding the uncorroded properties of concrete beams are the most influencing factors on the corresponding corroded properties of the beams.

Reduction of cement consumption by producing smart green concretes with natural zeolites

        Nguyen Thoi Trung,Nima Alemi,James H. Haido,Mahdi Shariati,Seyedata Baradaran,Salim T. Yousif 국제구조공학회 2019 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.24 No.3

This study was carried out to evaluate the natural zeolite in producing green concrete as an effort to prevent global warming and environmental impact problems of cement industries. To achieve this target, two types of natural zeolites applied to study physical, chemical and compressive strength of concrete containing different percentages of zeolites. The results in comparison with control samples indicate that compressive strength of zeolites mixes increases with the 15% replacement of zeolite instead of cement in all types of samples. In the water-cement ratio of 0.6, results showed an increase in the compressive strength of all percentages of replacement. This results indicate that using natural zeolites could be produced a green concrete by a huge reduction and saving in the consumption of cement.

Using genetic algorithms method for the paramount design of reinforced concrete structures

        Chuanhua Xu,Xiliang Zhang,James H. Haido,Peyman Mehrabi,Ali Shariati,Edy Tonnizam Mohamad,Nguyen Hoang,Karzan Wakil 국제구조공학회 2019 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.71 No.5

Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have found the best design for reinforced concrete frames. The design of the optimum beam sections by GAs has been unified. The process of the optimum-design sections has satisfied axial, flexural, shear and torsion necessities based on the designing code. The frames’ function has contained the function of both concrete and reinforced steel besides the function of the frames’ formwork. The results have revealed that limiting the dimension of frame-beam with the dimension of frame-column have increased the optimum function of the structure, thereby reducing the reanalysis requirement for checking the optimum-designed structures through GAs.

Mechanical properties of sustainable green self-compacting concrete incorporating recycled waste PET: A state-of-the-art review

        Shireen T. Saadullah,James H. Haido,Yaman S.S. Al-Kamaki Techno-Press 2023 Advances in concrete construction Vol.16 No.1

Majority of the plastic produced each year is being disposed in land after single-use, which becomes waste and takes up a lot of storage space. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find alternative solutions instead of disposal. Recycling and reusing the PET plastic waste as aggregate replacement and fiber in concrete production can be one of the eco- friendly methods as there is a great demand for concrete around the world, especially in developing countries by raising human awareness of the environment, the economy, and Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a key development in concrete technology that offers a number of attractive features over traditional concrete applications. Recently, in order to improve its durability and prevent such plastics from directly contacting the environment, various kinds of plastics have been added. This review article summarizes the latest evident on the performance of SCC containing recycled PET as eco-friendly aggregates and fiber. Moreover, it highlights the influence of substitution content, shape, length, and size on the fresh and properties of SCC incorporating PET plastic. Based on the findings of the articles that were reviewed for this study, it is observed that SCC made of PET plastic (PETSCC) can be employed in construction era owing to its acceptable mechanical and fresh properties. On the other hand, it is concluded that owing to the lightweight nature of plastic aggregate, Reusing PET waste in the construction application is an effective approach to reduces the earthquake risk of a building.
