An Investigation into the Non-bulk Rail Freight Transport in Australia

Hadi GHADERI,Stephen CAHOON,Hong-Oanh NGUYEN 한국해운물류학회 2015 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.31 No.1

In the last decade freight transport has gained further momentum in Australia, partly through significant demand growth at both domestic and international levels and partly as the result of Australia’s long term need for infrastructure decision making. Amongst the freight task, non-bulk freight is the fastest growing freight task in Australia and is forecast to grow much faster than the rate of population growth and the average national GDP growth. However, rail’s share in the non-bulk market has declined significantly in the last four decades. This study therefore provides an insight into the efficiency and operational management issues facing by the Australian non-bulk rail sector by focusing on three areas; the level of track compatibility and the relevant operational issues, the demographics of non-bulk freight in Australia and the current status of intermodal terminals in relation to rail connectivity and location. As the result, a more detailed understanding of the current shortages in the Australian non-bulk rail freight sector is achieved and managerial implications are provided.

Current Challenges in the Recruitment and Retention of Seafarers: An Industry Perspective from Vietnam

Trong Thanh NGUYEN,Hadi GHADERI,Livingstone Divine CAESAR,Stephen CAHOON 한국해운물류학회 2014 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.30 No.2

The shortage of seafarers (especially ship officers) has already been identified as a global issue that is more likely to worsen in the immediate future. Thus, increasing attention needs to be given to the problems that hinder the effective recruitment and retention of seafarers in order to stabilize the flow of skilled labor to the global shipping industry. The aim of this paper is to discuss the seafarer shortage issue from the perspective of Vietnam which is one of the key emerging sources of crew supply in Asia. Specifically, a case study research involving the Vietnam Ocean Shipping Joint Stock Company (VOSCO) is used to highlight the challenges confronting the current recruitment and retention of seafarers in Vietnam. With regards to recruitment, it was found that the low quality of graduates and trained seafarers, as well as the lack of competent onshore crew executives are pertinent issues that need to be addressed by shipping industry employers in Vietnam. In terms of retention, poor working and living conditions on-board ships is a key factor that must be given attention to improve retention among seafarers. This study recommends the development of effective human resource strategies for companies such as VOSCO and other shipping industry employers of Vietnamese seafarers in order to improve their recruitment and retention rates.

Micromorphology analysis of specific 3-D surface texture of silver chiral nanoflower sculptured structures

        Stefan Talu,Miroslaw Bramowicz,Slawomir Kulesza,Atefeh Ghaderi,Hadi Savaloni,Reza Babaei,Shahram Solaymani 한국공업화학회 2016 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.43 No.-

This study presents research into the three-dimensional (3-D) surface texture of silver chiralnanoflowers with three-, four- and five-folds spatial symmetry, which were produced using obliqueangle deposition method with rotating sample holder. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy(AFM), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) measurements were carried out inorder to study 3-D morphology and structure of the samples at the nanoscale. Obtained results werefound to provide an insight into important relationships between the structure of prepared nanoflowersand their properties. Results presented in the paper proved the usefulness of the method for preparationof high-quality, sculptured 3-D nanostructures with pre-designed shapes (with narrower and longerpetals) and desired porosity. Specific structure, shape, and length scale of the 3-D deposits can be thenverified in simulations for quick characterization of the samples. This analysis helps to understand theirfunctional role in the test surface, in order to evaluate the relation among the 3-D microtextured surface.
