Effect of Cr-Rich Phase Precipitation on Magnetic and Mechanical Properties of Fe-20% Cr Alloy

<P>Magnetic Hysteresis Loop (MHL) and micro-Vickers hardness measurements were carried out in isothermal aged Fe-20 wt. % Cr alloy. The results were compared with the existing atom probe data at similar heat treated conditions. Coercivity and hardness of the alloy was increased and remanence of the alloy was decreased with the increase in ageing time. Such increase in the magnetic and mechanical hardness was due to the nucleation and growth of Cr rich α' phase. The size of the Cr rich α' phase precipitates were increased and the number density of the precipitates were decreased with the increase in ageing time observed by atom probe analysis. In this work a good correlation between hardness (H<SUB>v</SUB>) and coercivity (H<SUB>c</SUB>) was found with the combined effect of precipitate size (r) and number density (n). A linear relationship was found with the change in coercivity and hardness of the alloy indicating that the MHL technique would be a good Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) tool for the evaluation of thermal embrittlement in structural components made of Fe-Cr alloys.</P>

<P>This study investigated the effects of pretreatment methods (such as autoclave, ultra-sonication and electrolysis) of mixed microalgae consortia (predominantly composed of Scenedesmus followed by Chlorella species) from natural ecological niche. In addition, the cultivated biomass (wet) was subsequently utilized for fermentative H-2 production in mesophilic regime. The results showed that peak hydrogen production rate (HPR) and hydrogen yield (HY) were achieved from electrolysis pretreated algal consortia as 236 +/- 14 mL/L-d and 37.7 +/- 0.4 mL/g (volatile solids) VSadded, whereas the untreated algal consortia resulted in the turnout as 64 +/- 5 mL/L-d and 9.5 +/- 0.0 mL/g VSadded, respectively. The significant increment observed in HPR and HY values were nearly 4 times higher. The solubilization of organic matter during the pretreatment showed positive correlation with the H-2 production. The energy generation rate and yield of the corresponding pretreatment methods were as follows, 1.44, 1.79 and 2.65 kJ/L-d for autoclave, ultra-sonication and electrolysis, the corresponding yields also fell in the range of 0.32, 0.41 and 0.43 kJ/g VSadded, respectively. We have studied(??) reactions from an emulsion target. The S--2H dibaryon has been searched for by the analysis of the ??? momentum spectrum together with emulsion data. No evidence of H production was observed in the mass range of 1.90-2.16 GeV/c². Upper limits for the production cross section of the H are (0.2-0.6)% of that for the quasifree ??? production at the 90% confidence level.

Seventy-six animals including cattle, sheep, horses, 6 species of zoo animals were employed for collection of fresh feces in order to detect verotoxigenic Esherichia coli (VTEC) by safe, quick and sensitive PCR-based molecular methods. Bacterial cell disruption with bead-beating followed by bacterial DNA purification with hydroxyapatide chromatography and gel filtration allowed DNA preparation from animal feces with high recovery and purity. A mountain goat was firstly shown by PCR and sequencing to shed verotoxin 2 gene (vt2) that was used to generate vt2 probe and second primer set for nested PCR to attempt more sensitive detection. Most sensitive nested PCR revealed that 45% of tested cattle and 47% of tested zoo animals were VTEC-positive, while least sensitive normal PCR detected VTEC from none of these animals except a mountain goat. Moderately sensitive detection by PCR in combination with hybridization suggested that the VTEC density varied between the VTEC-positive cattle.
Seed-mediated synthesis of Pd-Rh bimetallic nanodendrites

This Letter describes a simple, aqueous-phase route to the synthesis of Pd-Rh bimetallic nanodendrites consisting of Rh branches anchored to a Pd nanocrystal core. Palladium nanocrystals with various shapes, including truncated octahedron, cube, octahedron, and thin plate, have all been successfully employed as seeds to grow Rh branches via the reduction of Na<SUB>3</SUB>RhCl<SUB>6</SUB> with l-ascorbic acid in an aqueous solution. The degree of Rh branching could be controlled by varying the concentration of Na<SUB>3</SUB>RhCl<SUB>6</SUB> involved in a synthesis. Electron microscopy analysis revealed that growth of Rh branches proceeded via attachment of small Rh particles that had been formed via homogeneous nucleation in solution.

<P>In this contribution we analyze modulation electron cyclotron resonance heating (MECH) experiment and discuss higher harmonic frequency dependence of transport coefficients. We use the bidirectional heat pulse propagation method, in which both inward propagating heat pulse and outward propagating heat pulse are analyzed at a radial range, in order to distinguish frequency dependence of transport coefficients due to hysteresis from that due to other reasons, such as radially dependent transport coefficients, a finite damping term, or boundary effects. The method is applied to MECH experiments performed in various helical and tokamak devices, i.e. Large Helical Device (LHD), TJ-II, Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR), and Doublet III-D (DIII-D) with different plasma conditions. The frequency dependence of transport coefficients are clearly observed, showing a possibility of existence of transport hysteresis in flux-gradient relation.</P>

<P>Simultaneous observations of Lunar Radar Sounder (LRS) and Laser ALTimeter (LALT) of Kaguya, a Japanese lunar exploration project, were carried out for the purpose of mapping regolith layer thickness of the Moon. Nadir surface echo of a high-frequency (5 MHz) pulse of LRS interferes the shallow (<; 10 m) subsurface echo from the bottom of the regolith layer, which subsequently makes the apparent surface be detected at a range deviated from the actual surface range, while the actual surface range is optically detected by LALT. Regolith layer thickness information is retrieved from this range difference after an inversion process. So far, four major maria on the near side of the Moon (Maria Tranquillitatis, Serenitatis, Imbrium, and Oceanus Procellarum) have been investigated, and the mean regolith layer thicknesses of the four maria were found to be about the same, ranging from 6.3 to 6.9 m. However, spatial distribution of areal regolith thickness appears different in eastern maria from western maria, which implies a difference of the growth history of the regolith layer.</P>
Search for sub-GeV dark matter by annual modulation using XMASS-I detector

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A search for dark matter (DM) with mass in the sub-GeV region (0.32–1 GeV) was conducted by looking for an annual modulation signal in XMASS, a single-phase liquid xenon detector. Inelastic nuclear scattering accompanied by bremsstrahlung emission was used to search down to an electron equivalent energy of 1 keV. The data used had a live time of 2.8 years (3.5 years in calendar time), resulting in a total exposure of 2.38 ton-years. No significant modulation signal was observed and 90% confidence level upper limits of 1.6 × <SUP> 10 − 33 </SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> at 0.5 GeV was set for the DM-nucleon cross section. This is the first experimental result of a search for DM mediated by the bremsstrahlung effect. In addition, a search for DM with mass in the multi-GeV region (4–20 GeV) was conducted with a lower energy threshold than previous analysis of XMASS. Elastic nuclear scattering was used to search down to a nuclear recoil equivalent energy of 2.3 keV, and upper limits of 2.9 × <SUP> 10 − 42 </SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> at 8 GeV was obtained.</P>
