Women’s Writing and Women’s Literacy in Two “Beauty and the Beast” Tales

Jennifer Geer 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2016 Asian Women Vol.32 No.2

This essay focuses on Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s “Beauty and the Beast” (1756) and Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy’s “The White Cat” (1797) as examples of the ways in which these French women writers’ contributions to literary fairy tales have been marginalized in English-speaking popular cultures. Although these writers were extremely popular in English translation during the eighteenth century, their gender, nationality, writing styles, and association with children’s literature led to their increasing marginalization during the nineteenth century, a process which has continued in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This marginalization is unfortunate, because it tends to obscure the ways in which Beaumont’s and d’Aulnoy’s tales furthered and were embedded within contemporary discourses about the education of young women. It also obscures these tales’ production within close-knit circles of female writers and readers: the Bluestocking circles within which Beaumont moved and d’Aulnoy’s seventeenth-century salon culture. The ways in which Beaumont’s Beauty values her books and learns to govern her emotions is very much in line with progressive ideals of women’s education in England during the 1750s; she may appear a rather passive heroine to modern eyes, but her love of books and her rational approach to relationships are values many Bluestockings espoused in opposition to contemporary stereotypes of frivolous, irrational, and essentially uneducable women; Beaumont’s tale presents these values to adolescents. The heroine of d’Aulnoy’s “The White Cat,” for her part, functions as an idealized image of the late seventeenth-century salonière: an apparently insignificant, small, and childlike female character who in fact wields great social and imaginative power. The Cat appears to be nothing more than a pampered house pet but is actually a powerful sorceress whose creativity and command of hospitality and storytelling enable her to resolve the Prince’s dilemmas and gain his love.

Stewardship, Stockmanship and Sustainability in Animal Agriculture

Szucs, E.,Geers, R.,Sossidou, E.N. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.9

Sufficient food supply for all humans was, is, and will remain one of the main priorities for mankind. The choice between food from crops or animals is related to philosophical, religious and ethical, but also cultural and economical, values. However, the concept of sustainable agriculture takes into account the organization of food supply through future generations. Not only quantity, but also quality is important, especially in relation to food safety and the method of production. Specifically, the aspect of animal welfare is becoming increasingly important with the focus on stewardship and stockmanship, i.e. responsibility of humans for their animals. In the future, implications for sustainability in animal production may be of more concern to stewardship paired by stockmanship, responsibility, consciousness and morality. The moral as a basic concept of sustainable agriculture is to maintain continuous development in harmony with nature to meet requirements in the world for living creatures including human beings to live in and steward. The objective of this paper is to discuss the above issues from different viewpoints on sustainable food supply, increasing food consumption and environmental protection.

Animal Welfare in Different Human Cultures, Traditions and Religious Faiths

        Szucs, E.,Geers, R.,Jezierski, T.,Sossidou, E.N.,Broom, D.M. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.11

Animal welfare has become a growing concern affecting acceptability of agricultural systems in many countries around the world. An earlier Judeo-Christian interpretation of the Bible (1982) that dominion over animals meant that any degree of exploitation was acceptable has changed for most people to mean that each person has responsibility for animal welfare. This view was evident in some ancient Greek writings and has parallels in Islamic teaching. A minority view of Christians, which is a widespread view of Jains, Buddhists and many Hindus, is that animals should not be used by humans as food or for other purposes. The commonest philosophical positions now, concerning how animals should be treated, are a blend of deontological and utilitarian approaches. Most people think that extremes of poor welfare in animals are unacceptable and that those who keep animals should strive for good welfare. Hence animal welfare science, which allows the evaluation of welfare, has developed rapidly.

Large eddy simulation of flow past a square cylinder with rounded leading corners: A comparison of 2D and 3D approaches

Liuliu Shi,Geer Yang,Shichuan Yao 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.6

The unsteady flow past a square cylinder with rounded leading corners is predicted at Re = 2600 by large eddy simulations (LES). The corner radius r is fixed at 3 mm and the cylinder width D is 12.7 mm, resulting in r / D = 0.236. Detailed comparisons are made between the two-dimensional (2D) and the three-dimensional (3D) results with previous experimental measurements [32, 33]. The results show that the Strouhal number agrees well with previous measurement [33], indicating that both 2D and 3D LES are capable of capturing the shedding of large-scale vortical strutures. The statistical quantities (e.g., the drag and lift coefficients, the time-averaged streamwise velocity, the root-mean-square of streamwise velocity and the Reynolds stress) were calculated and validated against experimental results [32, 33]. The 3D LES results show reasonable agreement with the experimental measurement [32, 33], while the results predicted by 2D LES deviate far from the experimental measurement [32, 33]. It is further demonstrated that the recirculation length and the vortex formation length are consistent with experimental results [33], while it is greatly shortened in 2D LES.

Hydrogel Ocular Inserts for the Treatment of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis

        Ryoo, Je Phil,R T Geer,R F Rosenbusch 한국약제학회 1992 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.22 No.3

Hydrogel coated ring shaped ocular inserts (containing the antibiotic, tylosin tartrate) were used in an evaluation of the effectiveness of polymeric ocular drug release devices for treating infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. The in vivo experiments represent the first experiments using hydrogel ocular inserts containing an antibiotic for treating infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. In the infection tests, ten calves were challenged with 2.4×10^8∼1.6×10^9 Moraxella bovis (a bacterium) colonies per eye following two ten minute ultraviolet radiation eye preconditioning exposures. Ninety five percent of the eyes (19 of 20 eyes) were successfully infected by this method. All infected eyes were monitored for the presence of the bacteria quantitiatively, and clinical observations were made for 14 days. The test was performed by three consecutive steps: 1) inoculation with 2 ultraviolet (UV) radiations, 2) growth of bacterial colonies and 3) treatment with medicated ring-shaped devices. The first bacteriological measurements after 2 UV exposures were performed at day 3 of the tests. At day 7 after inoculation of both eyes of a calf with M. bovis, a medicated or a non-medicated ring-shaped device was inserted into each eye of a calf. The eye receiving the non-medicated ring was taken as a control for comparison with the eye that received a medicated ring. During the next 7 day period following a medicated ring insertion, the number of bacteria in the treated eyes dropped dramatically to negligible levels (0 to 30 colony forming units/swab), while the control eyes which received a non-medicated ring still exhibited a relatively high number of bacteria (l0³ to 10^6 colony forming units/swab). The number of bacteria was significantly reduced by the antibiotic released from the medicated ocular insert.
