Lemanea manipurensis sp. nov. (Batrachospermales), a freshwater red algal species from North-East India

        Ganesan, E.K.,West, J.A.,Zuccarello, G.C.,de Goer, S. Loiseaux,Rout, J. The Korean Society of Phycology 2015 ALGAE Vol.30 No.1

A new macroscopic riverine red algal species, Lemanea manipurensis sp. nov. (Batrachospermales) is described from Manipur in northeast India. It has a sparsely branched, pseudoparenchymatous thallus with a single, central axial filament that lacks cortical filaments. Spermatangia occur generally in isolated, low and indistinct patches or form an almost continuous ring around the axis. Carposporophytes project into the hollow thallus cavity without an ostiole. The most striking morphological feature is the carposporophyte with very short gonimoblast filaments having cylindrical, narrow and sparsely branched sterile filaments, the terminal cell of each branch with a single, large, elongate carpospore. The widely distributed L. fluviatilis has spherical carpospores in long branched chains. Phylogenetic analysis of rbcL sequence data and comparison with other Batrachospermales clearly show that our specimens do not align with other species of Lemanea and Paralemanea investigated thus far. Five specific names attributed in previous literature (1973-2014) to Lemanea from Manipur, L. australis, L. catenata, L. fluviatilis, L. mamillosa, and L. torulosa are rejected until critical anatomical and molecular evidence is available for specimens from the Manipur river systems. Taxa referable to Paralemanea were not confirmed for India in this study. In view of the high demand for food and medical uses of L. manipurensis in northeast India, conservation measures are needed for its long term survival. The present paper constitutes the first combined morphological / molecular study on a freshwater red alga from India.

Fourier Cosine and Sine Transformable Boehmians

Ganesan, Chinnaraman,Roopkumar, Rajakumar Department of Mathematics 2014 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.54 No.1

The range spaces of Fourier cosine and sine transforms on $L^1$([0, ${\infty}$)) are characterized. Using Fourier cosine and sine type convolutions, Fourier cosine and sine transformable Boehmian spaces have been constructed, which properly contain $L^1$([0, ${\infty}$)). The Fourier cosine and sine transforms are extended to these Boehmian spaces consistently and their properties are established.

      • Inexpensive electrochemical synthesis of nickel iron sulphides on nickel foam: super active and ultra-durable electrocatalysts for alkaline electrolyte membrane water electrolysis

        Ganesan, P.,Sivanantham, A.,Shanmugam, S. Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 Journal of materials chemistry. A, Materials for e Vol.4 No.42

Efficient and durable electrocatalysts for water splitting (both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)) are required for the replacement of expensive noble metal-based catalysts used in water electrolysis devices. Herein, we describe the inexpensive synthesis of electrochemically deposited nickel iron sulphides on nickel foam (NiFeS/NF) and their use as highly efficient bi-functional water splitting catalysts that can meet the current energy demands. The NiFeS/NF electrocatalysts exhibited low overpotentials of approximately 231 mV for the OER and 180 mV for the HER in 1 M KOH. Moreover, the NiFeS/NF electrocatalysts exhibited a turnover frequency of one order of magnitude higher than those of state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts (RuO2 and Pt/C) for the OER and HER. In addition to this excellent activity, the bi-functional catalyst also exhibited an outstanding OER and HER electrode stability for over 200 h with minimal loss in activity. Further, it can be directly used in the practical application of alkaline electrolyte membrane water electrolysis. The high performance, prolonged electrode stability, and facile synthesis as an adherent coating on nickel foam suggest that NiFeS/NF electrocatalysts might be suitable for use as alternative commercially viable catalysts.

Designing Knowledge and Expert System Engineering

        Ganesan, N. 서울대학교 어학연구소 1988 語學硏究 Vol.24 No.4

The communication consists of two parts. The first one deals with the Representation of Knowledge and the second one deals with its processing. Here below, I describe the first part by laying down some hypothesis for basic activities of representation of knowledge. It is an integrated view of how a propositional and interpropositional account of knowledge can be represented considering the proposition as a minimal unit of observation. It is a fragment of methodology related to semantic networks which claims that the information stored in the network, in most cases, is intensional. It is an experimental approach for the representation and the interpretation of knowledge articulated on a finite set of primitive operators (=, ≠, ω) and based on a finite set of cognitive and language invariants which I postulate as existing primitives of any domain.

      • Flexural strengthening of RCC beams using FRPs and ferrocement - a comparative study

        Ganesan, N.,Bindurania, P.,Indira, P.V. Techno-Press 2020 Advances in concrete construction Vol.10 No.1

This paper deals with a comparative study among three different rehabilitation techniques, namely, (i) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), (ii) glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) and (iii) ferrocement on the flexural strengthening of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) beams. As these different techniques have to be compared on a level playing field, tensile coupon tests have been carried out initially for GFRP, CFRP and ferrocement and the number of layers required in each of these composites in terms of the tensile strength. It was found that for the selected constituents of the composites, one layer of CFRP was equivalent to three layers of GFRP and five layers of wiremesh reinforcement in ferrocement. Rehabilitation of RCC beams using these equivalent laminates shows that all the three composites performed in a similar way and are comparable. The parameters selected in this study were (i) the strengthening material and (ii) the level of pre-distress induced to the beams prior to the rehabilitation. It was noticed that, as the levels of pre-distress decreases, the percentage attainment of flexural capacity and flexural stiffness of the rehabilitated beams increases for all the three selected composites used for rehabilitation. Load-deflection behavior, failure modes, energy absorption capacity, displacement ductility and curvature ductility were compared among these composites and at different distress levels for each composite. The results indicate that ferrocement showed a better performance in terms of ductility than other FRPs, and between the FRPs, GFRP exhibited a better ductility than the CFRP counterpart.

      • SFRHPC interior beam-column-slab joints under reverse cyclic loading

        Ganesan, N.,Nidhi, M.,Indira, P.V. Techno-Press 2015 Advances in concrete construction Vol.3 No.3

Beam-column joints are highly vulnerable locations which are to be designed for high ductility in order to take care of unexpected lateral forces such as wind and earthquake. Previous investigations reveal that the addition of steel fibres to concrete improves its ductility significantly. Also, due to presence of slab the strength and ductility of the beam increases considerably and ignoring the effect of slab can lead to underestimation of beam capacity and defiance of strong column weak beam concept. The influence of addition of steel fibres on the strength and behaviour of steel fibre reinforced high performance concrete (SFRHPC) interior beam-column-slab joints was investigated experimentally. The specimens were subjected to reverse cyclic loading. The variable considered was the volume fraction of crimped steel fibres i.e., 0%, 0.5% and 1.0%. The results show that the addition of steel fibres improves the first crack load, strength, ductility, energy absorption capacity and initial stiffness of the beam.
