What is known about the medicinal potential of bamboo?

Janayne Gagliano,Fernanda Anselmo-Moreira,Wilton Ricardo Sala‑Carvalho,Cláudia Maria Furlan 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2022 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.22 No.3

Bamboos are considered one of China’s four noble plants and have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Despite that, what is really known about the chemical composition and biological activities of bamboos? Which species have been studied? What trials have been done to test their medicinal properties? This paper compiled studies of the last 11 years about phytochemical and biological activities of bamboos aiming a critical analysis of the results to provide perspectives and direc‑ tions for future research using bamboo species as a potential source of drug leads. This review gathers available information on major scientifc databases from the period of 2007–2018. A total of 136 papers regarding 87 bamboo species and 24 genera were compiled. Studies regarding phytochemical and or bioactivity of species from the Olyreae tribe (herbaceous bamboo) were not found. Phenolic compounds were the major class of secondary metabolites reported for bamboos species, followed by coumarins and alkaloids. Antioxidant capacity was the most performed bioassay. Phyllostachys has been the most studied genus. This review highlights a big lack of knowledge regarding American bamboos, mainly for the herbaceous species. Although bamboos are known to have a diversity of favonoids, there are other classes of constituents that should be better studied. There are few bamboo species with their in vivo biological potential tested. Therefore, bamboos have economically important secondary metabolite classes with a possible medicinal application, but further studies on phytochemistry and in vivo assays are still needed to better evaluate their benefts to human health.

Recommended Surgery for >1 cm Noninvasive Follicular Neoplasia with Papillary-Like Nuclear Features (NIFTP)

        Alessandro Pontin,Ettore Gagliano,Gianlorenzo Dionigi 대한갑상선-내분비외과학회 2019 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.19 No.4

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is a heterogeneous tumor group with differing pathogenesis and prognosis of the individual subtypes. In addition, a tumor entity has been spun off, now referred to as “noninvasive follicular neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP). A recent study, based on a comprehensive evaluation of a prospective multicenter NIFTP-based retrospective study, was intended to clarify whether NIFTP can metastasize and thus justify a reduced resection rate compared to classical PTC. For 3 reasons, Authors nicely recommend caution regarding a limited thyroid procedure (i.e. lobectomy vs. completion thyroidectomy): i) In the current literature, lymph node metastases have been described in 10 patients with NIFTP, and in 1 patient lung metastases. ii) As reported for the first time in this study, nearly one-fifth of patients have NIFTP-associated PTMC with unclear potential for metastasis. iii) Observation periods are still relatively short and so far, there are no agreed follow-up standards.

Efficacy of Percutaneous Thermal Ablation of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

        Ettore Caruso,Ettore Gagliano,Gianlorenzo Dionigi 대한갑상선-내분비외과학회 2019 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.19 No.4

Percutaneous thermoablation (PTA) has become an increasingly used option in the interventional treatment of symptomatic, cytologic and sonographic benign solid thyroid gland disease. Currently, there is no high-level evidence of treatment for differentiated thyroid cancer by means of PTA. Surgery is a standard treatment for primary and also for recurrent thyroid cancer, followed by radioactive iodine and thyroid hormone therapy. PTA, however, can be used in patients at high-risk and in patients who refuse to undergo repeated surgery. The Task Force Committee of the Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology has developed recommendations for the optimal use of PTA for thyroid nodules. However, there are still several questions on safe distance to the laryngeal nerves, no data on duration of PTA application around the nerves, no intra-procedure assessment of laryngeal nerves function and position. Future experimental studies are required.

      • Land Subsidence in Oil&Gas Activities: Analysis and Monitoring with an Integrated Approach

        ( Alice Pozzoli ),( Alessandro Mosconi ),( Stefano Gagliano ),( Alberto Meroni ) 대한지질공학회 2019 대한지질공학회 학술발표회논문집 Vol.2019 No.2

Monitoring of soil compaction in Oil&Gas industry is worth in those areas where the hydrocarbon extraction goes along with either important natural land subsidence and soil deformation due to human activities such as building constructions, infrastructural implementations rather than fluid extractions and withdrawals. Monitoring the resulting vertical displacement is crucial for health and safety management, due to the potential impact on both people and environment. The possibility to integrate data collected from different instruments coming out with a fast and reliable analysis and interpretation is necessary to support decision making. The direct access to analyzed data through remote control would help to enforce prompt and tailored decisions enabling the optimization of anthropic activities vs natural land subsidence. Eni thanks to its extended technological know-how has been continuously developing innovative and integrated methodologies in order to analyze and interpret any acquired soil deformation parameter. To this purpose, thanks to a collaboration with Harris Geospatial Solution, ePISAV, an ENVI extension, has been customized, able to capitalize on and combine all the different data collected in different surveys. The workflow has been applied to an onshore site, enabling a complex study on land subsidence integrating monitoring parameters as InSAR, CGPS and shallow compaction data. Moreover, a quantitative comparison has been performed between collected measurements and the predictive subsidence model developed in house, allowing a proper calibration of the geomechanical model.

        Altering Sexual Development in Arabidopsis

        Calzada, Vielle,Phillippe, Jean,Moore, James M.,Gagliano, Wendy B.,Grossniklaus, Ueli 한국식물학회 1998 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.41 No.2

The reproductive system determines the way in which gametes develop and interact to form a new organism. Therefore, it exerts the primary level of control of genotypic frequencies in plant populations, and plays a fundamental role in plant breeding. A basic understanding of plant reproductive development will completely transform current breeding strategies used for seed production. Apomixis is an asexual form of reproduction in which embryogenesis occurs in a cell lineage lacking both meiosis and fertilization, and that culminates in the formation of viable progeny genetically identical to the mother plant. The transfer of apomixis into sexual crops will allow the production of self-perpetuating improved hybrids, and the fixation of any desired heterozygous genotype. The initiation of apomictic development invariably takes place at early stages of ovule ontogeny, before the establishment of the megagametophytic phase. The developmental versatility associated with megagametophyte formation suggests that the genetic and molecular regulation of apomixis is intimately related to the regulation of sexuality. Differences between the initiation of sexual and apomictic development may be determined by regulatory genes that act during megasporogenesis, and that control events leading to the formation of unreduced female gametophytes. To test this hypothesis, we are isolating and characterizing genes that act during megasporogenesis in Arabidopsis thaliana and investigating their potential role in the induction of apomixis. We are using a recently established transposon-based enhancer detection and gene trap insertional mutagenesis system that allows the identification of genes based on their expression patterns. An initial screen of transposants has yielded over 20 lines conferring restricted GUS expression during early ovule development. We have obtained the sequence of genomic fragments flanking the transposon insertion. Serveral have homology to genes playing important roles in plant and animal development. They include cell cycle regulators, enzymes involved in callose hydrolysis, leucine-rich repeat protein kinase receptors, and expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of unknown function. Independently, a genetic screen allows the identification of female sterile mutants defective in megasporogenesis. Results from these experiments will imporve our basic understanding of reproductive development in plants, and will set the basis for a sustained effort in plant germ line biotechnology, a first step toward a flexible transfer of apomixis into a large variety of sexual crops.

Aripiprazole-induced Tardive Dyskinesia in 13 Years Old Girl Successfully Treated with Biperiden: A Case Report

        Marco Lamberti,Gabriella Di Rosa,Francesca Cucinotta,Erica Pironti,Cecilia Galati,Antonella Gagliano 대한정신약물학회 2017 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.15 No.3

In the last years second-generation antipsychotics are increasingly prescribed in the pediatric population for the treatment of several psychiatric disorders. Among the long term adverse effects, extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) are less reported compared to first-generation antipsychotics. Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a iatrogenic rare syndrome characterized by persistent slow writhing and sudden involuntary movements mainly involving the oral-buccal-lingual area with masticatory movements. We report a young girl with mood disorders accompanied by mild intellectual disability and behavioral problems who had TD after treatment with Aripiprazole, which responded to Biperiden therapy.
