A central facility concept for nuclear microreactor maintenance and fuel cycle management

        Fakhry Faris,Buongiorno Jacopo,Rhyne Steve,Cross Benjamin,Roege Paul,Landrey Bruce 한국원자력학회 2024 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.56 No.3

Commercial deployment of nuclear microreactors presents an opportunity for the industry to rethink its approach to manufacturing, siting, operation and maintenance, and fuel cycle management as certain principles used in grid-scale nuclear projects are not applicable to a decentralized microreactor economy. The success of this nascent industry is dependent on its ability to reduce infrastructure, logistical, regulatory and lifecycle costs. A utility-like ‘Central Facility’ that consolidates the services required and responsibilities borne by vendors into one or a few centralized locations will be necessary to support the deployment of a fleet of microreactors. This paper discusses the requirements for a Central Facility, its implications on the cost structures of owners and suppliers of microreactors, and the impact of the facility for the broader microreactor industry. In addition, this paper discusses the pre-requisites for eligibility as well as the opportunities for a Central Facility host site. While there are many suitable locations for such a capability across the U.S., this paper considers a facility co-located with the Vogtle Nuclear Power Plant and Savannah River Sites to illustrate how a Central Facility can leverage the existing infrastructure and stimulate a local ecosystem.

Fakhry, Amal Bahgat,Ahmed, Asmaa Ismail,AbdelAlim, Mahmoud Abdo,Ramadan, Dalia Ibrahim Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.5

Background: The reversion-inducing-cysteine-rich protein with Kazal motifs (RECK) gene is a novel transformation suppressor gene linked to several malignancies. Objective: To analyze any association between RECK gene rs10814325 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and HCC susceptibility with various clinicopathological and laboratory data. Materials and Methods: RECK gene rs10814325 SNP was estimated, using real-time PCR, in 30 HCC patients on top of HCV infection, 30 HCV related cirrhotic patients and 30 healthy controls. Results: No special pattern of association could be detected on comparing the RECK gene rs10814325 genotypes(P=0.5), or alleles(P=0.49) among the studied groups. HCC patients with TT genotype had younger age (mean of $54.1{\pm}6.0$ years vs $60.6{\pm}10.2$ years for TC/CC genotypes, P=0.035). Abdominal distension was significantly greater in TT genotype patients (75% vs 30%for TC/CC genotypes, P=0.045). The TT genotype was present in 75% of patients with lymph node metastasis. Serum GGT levels were higher in TT genotype patients [80 (48.5-134.8) IU/L vs 40 (33-87.5) IU/L for TC/CCgenotypes], and lower limb edema was observed in 60% for TT vs 20% for TC/CCgenotypes, but both just failed to reach significance (p=0.05 and p=0.06 respectively). Conclusions: RECK gene rs10814325 T>C could not be considered a risk factor for HCC development on top of HCV, but may be related to the disease progression and metastasis.

Fakhri Etemadi,Mohammad Etemadi,Mahmoud Mani,Sina Pooladsanj 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.2

This investigation assesses the change of aerodynamic characteristics of triangular and star-shaped damaged airfoils with repair patches. Both experimental and numerical methods to determine aerodynamic coefficients are used in this study. The test model is a NACA 64 1 -412 airfoil full span, which is considered by using five schematics: Clean model, damaged model, upper repaired model, lower repaired model, and fully repaired model. Repair patches are chosen based on the Aircraft battle damage repair (ABDR) manuals. Various effects of repair schemes on triangular and star-shaped damages are quantitatively and qualitatively illustrated. A novel visualization method by paint and oil is used in wind tunnel tests to study the effects of repair patches on the damaged airfoil.

      • Prediction of Porosity logs From Petrophysic Data Using Soft-Computing Method in Persian Gulf Gas field

        Amin Fakhri,Mohammadhassan Behroozi,Fatemeh Alimadadi,Hossein Sadati 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10

Obtaining physical reservoir characteristics is extremely important and necessary to determine the correlations, productions and field development. Reservoir characteristics include porosity, permeability, cementation, and the like which are obtained from petrophysic and petrographic analyses. From these properties porosity is the most important static property of petroleum reservoirs that can be used to perceive permeability, fluid behaviors, capillary pressure, and sedimentological interpretations. One of the goals of prediction, accomplished in this paper, is to find out the missed porosity logs to interpret a gas reservoir in the well due to available and suitable petrophysical logs gathered from near wells. In some wells, we cannot measure a number of petrophysical properties whereas wells are maybe washed out or the borehole tools are not available for old wells. Therefore, petroleum geologist should pursue some methods to transfer accessible data into faulty wells. It means that they predict missed data using information which is available in its near wells. For prediction purposes of this property, “esistivity Logs” “amma Ray Log” and “onic Log”will have to be used as input information. The relationships of porosity logs versus the logs mentioned above are absolutely nonlinear. Soft computing methods are one of the powerful approaches used to identify lost data.

        Sajad Fakhri,Safoora Jafarian,Mohammad Bagher Majnooni,Mohammad Hosein Farzaei,Ehsan Mohammadi-Noori,Haroon Khan 대한통증학회 2022 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.35 No.1

Background: Cupressus arizonica Greene is a coniferous tree with great importance in fragrance and pharmaceutical industries. Essential oils from C. arizonica (EC) have shown potential antioxidant, and anti-microbial activities. This study aimed at investigating the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects/mechanisms of EC. Methods: The EC was evaluated for anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities on male Wistar rats using a formalin test and carrageenan-induced paw edema, respectively. Also, we pre-treated some of the animals with naloxone and flumazenil in the formalin test to find out the possible contributions of opioid and benzodiazepine receptors to EC anti-nociceptive effects. Finally, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis was used to identify the EC’s constituents. Results: EC in intraperitoneal doses of 0.5 and 1 g/kg significantly decrease the nociceptive responses in both early and late phases of the formalin test. From a mechanistic point of view, flumazenil administration 20 minutes before the most effective dose of EC (1 g/kg) showed a meaningful reduction in the associated antinociceptive responses during the early and late phases of the formalin test. Naloxone also reduced the anti-nociceptive role of EC in the late phase. Furthermore, EC at the doses of 1, 0.5, and 0.25 g/kg significantly reduced paw edema from 0.5 hours after carrageenan injection to 4 hours. GC/MS analysis showed that isolated EC is a monoterpene-rich oil with the major presence of α-pinene (71.92%), myrcene (6.37%), δ-3-carene (4.68%), β-pinene (3.71%), and limonene (3.34%). Conclusions: EC showed potent anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities with the relative involvement of opioid and benzodiazepine receptors.

Intrathecal administration of naringenin improves motor dysfunction and neuropathic pain following compression spinal cord injury in rats: relevance to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities

        Sajad Fakhri,Shahryar Sabouri,Amir Kiani,Mohammad Hosein Farzaei,Khodabakhsh Rashidi,Ahmad Mohammadi-Farani,Ehsan Mohammadi-Noori,Fatemeh Abbaszadeh 대한통증학회 2022 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.35 No.3

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most debilitating disorders throughout the world, causing persistent sensory-motor dysfunction, with no effective treatment. Oxidative stress and inflammatory responses play key roles in the secondary phase of SCI. Naringenin (NAR) is a natural flavonoid with known antiinflammatory and antioxidative properties. This study aims at evaluating the effects of intrathecal NAR administration on sensory-motor disability after SCI. Methods: Animals underwent a severe compression injury using an aneurysm clip. About 30 minutes after surgery, NAR was injected intrathecally at the doses of 5, 10, and 15 mM in 20 μL volumes. For the assessment of neuropathic pain and locomotor function, acetone drop, hot plate, inclined plane, and Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan tests were carried out weekly till day 28 post-SCI. Effects of NAR on matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 activity was appraised by gelatin zymography. Also, histopathological analyses and serum levels of glutathione (GSH), catalase and nitrite were measured in different groups. Results: NAR reduced neuropathic pain, improved locomotor function, and also attenuated SCI-induced weight loss weekly till day 28 post-SCI. Zymography analysis showed that NAR suppressed MMP-9 activity, whereas it increased that of MMP-2, indicating its anti-neuroinflammatory effects. Also, intrathecal NAR modified oxidative stress related markers GSH, catalase, and nitrite levels. Besides, the neuroprotective effect of NAR was corroborated through increased survival of sensory and motor neurons after SCI. Conclusions: These results suggest intrathecal NAR as a promising candidate for medical therapeutics for SCI-induced sensory and motor dysfunction.

The performance of pelletized Ce-Y and Ni-Y zeolites for removal of thiophene from model gasoline solutions

Maryam Montazerolghaem,Fakhry Seyedeyn-Azad,Amir Rahimi 한국화학공학회 2015 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.32 No.2

H-Y zeolite was prepared with Na-Y zeolite via ion-exchange method. Ni-Y and Ce-Y zeolites were thenprepared with H-Y zeolite via solid-state ion-exchange (SSIE) method. The pellet form of the zeolites was employed forremoval of thiophene from samples containing 194, 116 and 72 ppmw sulfur in a batch system at ambient condition. The removal of sulfur over the three types of the adsorbents decreased according to the following order: Ce-Y (81.7%)>Ni-Y (75.2%)>Na-Y (51.7%), indicating that the Ce-Y zeolite was the most effective adsorbent for removing of sulfurcompounds from gasoline. Adsorption isotherms of thiophene on Ni-Y and Ce-Y zeolites were obtained and correlatedwith six well-known isotherms. The equilibrium data of thiophene adsorption were well fitted to the isotherms and thecorresponding parameters and fitting error criteria of the isotherm equations were obtained.
