New Records of Two Zooxanthellate Scleractinian Corals (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Scleractinia) from Korea

Eunae Choi,Jun-Im Song 한국동물분류학회 2015 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.31 No.2

The two zooxanthellate scleractinian corals are newly recorded in Korea: Psammocora albopicta Benzoni, 2006 of the family Psammocoridae and Oulastrea crispata (Lamarck, 1816) of the family Faviidae. These families are also newly recorded in Korea. Specimens were collected from the subtidal zones of Jeju-do Island, Korea by SCUBA diving from 1999 to 2014. Two scleractinians are described based on the morphological characters of skeletal structures. Psammocora albopicta is distinguished by its encrusting cerioid growth form, high density of corallites, small calicular diameter, single styliform columella, and fewer rows of enclosed septa. Oulastrea crispata is characterized by its encrusting plocoid growth form, polygonal calicular shape, irregular paliform lobes, and papillose columella.

Change of Surviving Fractions based on the Recovery of Potentially Lethal Damage in HFL-I Cell Line

Eunae Choi 한국방사선학회 2017 한국방사선학회 논문지 Vol.11 No.3

Potentially lethal damage repair (PLDR) in HFL-I was investigated by delayed plating experiments. The surviving fraction data were fitted to the linear Quadratic equation (LogSn=-nγ(αd+βd2) where γ=1 for immediate plating). And a repair factor γ was developed to compare survival for immediate and delayed plating . When we only took into account the repair factor of PLDR γ which was derived from the delay assay, the cell survival response th fractionated carbon ion irradiation was not fully matched. This gap suggested that consideration of another repair process is necessary. So this suggests that the various repair process plays an important role in the fractionated irradiations.

Biophysical Model Including a Potentially Lethal Damage Repair Parameter in Fractionated Carbon Beam

        Choi Eunae,Yoon Myonggeun,Suzuki Masao,Matsufuji Naruhiro,Jung Wonguyn 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.77 No.2

The amount of potentially lethal damage repair (PLDR) is a significant factor in the process of modeling the survival curves of cells irradiated with fractionated carbon beams. Because the amount of PLDR generally depends on the features of the cells and the linear energy transfer (LET), the amount of PLDR of cells irradiated with fractionated carbon beams shows distinct differences from that of cells irradiated with X-rays. This study considered a new parameter dependent on the correlation between the PLDR trait (T) of the cells over a time interval (Δ) at the fractionated carbon beam irradiation. The survival curves of the cells irradiated with fractionated carbon beams n times were predicted using the ζ and the Ψ values from the delay assay. This study aims to overcome the barriers of traditional methods by developing a new survival curve model with new parameters based on an analysis of the PLDR traits of cells over time interval in fractionated carbon beam irradiation and to suggest a model that produces results significantly closer to the experimental data.

Monte Carlo simulation of base damage as a function of linear energy transfer for applications in radiation biophysics

Choi Eunae,Kim Youme,천권수 한국물리학회 2021 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.79 No.10

This work presents simulations of the concentration of clustered DNA damage of various complexities induced by monoenergetic electrons, protons, and alpha particles within the range of linear energy transfer (LET). Using Geant4-DNA tool, we measured the LET in liquid water and calculated the frequency of base damage around single strand breaks, double strand breaks, and complex strand breaks. The protons and the alpha particles depended greatly on LET, which affected the concentration of base damage. For alpha particles, at 206.40 keV/μm, a high LET region was irradiated, the number of cases with more than 6 base damages was increased by about 70 times compared to the low LET region. The data indicate that high-LET radiation is likely to be much more effective in producing concentrated clusters of damage, and that having a quantitative estimate of the extent of this type of damage is important. These lesions are responsible for most of the significant cellular effects associated with ionizing radiation.

Thermal dispersion method for an ultrasonic phased-array transducer

Choi, Euna,Lee, Wonseok,Roh, Yongrae Institute of Pure and Applied Physics 2016 Japanese Journal of Applied Physics Vol.55 No.7

When the driving voltage of an ultrasonic transducer is increased to improve the quality of ultrasound images, heat is generated inside the transducer, which can burn the patient's skin and degrade transducer performance. In this study, the method to disperse the heat inside an ultrasonic phased-array transducer has been examined. The mechanism of temperature rise due to heat generation inside the transducer was investigated by numerical analysis and the effects of the thermal properties of the components of the transducer such as specific heat and thermal conductivity on the temperature rise were analyzed. On the basis of the results, a heat-dispersive structure was devised to reduce the temperature at the surface of the acoustic lens of the transducer. Prototype transducers were fabricated to check the efficacy of the heat-dispersive structure. By experiments, we have confirmed that the new heat-dispersive structure can reduce the internal temperature by as much as 50% in comparison with the conventional structure, which confirms the validity of the thermal dispersion mechanism developed in this work. Enhancing bio-availability of β-naphthoflavone by supramolecular complexation with 6,6′-thiobis(methylene)-β-cyclodextrin dimer

        Choi, Jae Min,Cho, Eunae,Lee, Benel,Jeong, Daham,Choi, Youngjin,Yu, Jae-Hyuk,Jung, Seunho Elsevier 2016 Carbohydrate polymers Vol.151 No.-

Abstract

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand activated transcriptional regulator, which governs key biological processes including detoxification of carcinogens. β-Naphthoflavone (β-NF) is a non-toxic flavonoid, and a potent AhR agonist. Thus, β-NF can induce the representative detoxifying enzyme cytochrome P4501A1, thereby enhancing the detoxification potential. However, its low water solubility hampers the use. We found that supramolecular complexation of β-NF with the synthetic 6,6′-thiobis(methylene)-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-S) dimer significantly enhanced β-NF’s role as an AhR agonist. The water solubility of β-NF was increased to 469 fold by effective supramolecular complexation with the β-CD-S dimer, and caused significant induction of cytochrome P4501A1. Stable formation of the supramolecular complex of β-NF with β-CD-S-dimer was verified by various analyses. In summary, supramolecular complexation of β-NF with β-CD-S dimer greatly enhanced bio-availability of β-NF as an AhR agonist. Our findings provide an easy, non-destructive, and alternative approach to enhance the bio-availability of therapeutics.

Highlights

6, 6′-Thiobis(methylene)-β-cyclodextrin dimer (β-CD-S-dimer) was synthesized.

The β-CD-S-dimer was used to enhance β-naphthoflavone’s water solubility.

The solubilized β-NF by complexation significantly induced the cytochrome P4501A1 activity.

β-NF supramolecular complex with β-CD-S-dimer enhanced the bio-functionality of β-NF.

Various instrumental analyses were performed to verify the formation of a supramolecular complex.

Dendrophyllia compressa Ogawa and Takahashi, 1995 is newly reported from Korea. The specimen was collected off Seogwipo, Jeju-do, Korea in 1969. It is described herein based on the morphological characters of the skeletal structures. Dendrophyllia compressa is characterized by its small and bushy growth form with branches, vertical growth direction, small calicular diameter, compressed calice, Pourtalès Plan with vertical septal inner edges, flat and spongy columella, exserted septal upper margins, and epitheca. Dendrophyllia compressa has been synonymized with Cladopsammia eguchii (Wells, 1982). However, the former species differs from the latter species in its growth form, growth direction, colony size, corallite size, and corallite shape.

      • Solubility and bioavailability enhancement of ciprofloxacin by induced oval-shaped mono-6-deoxy-6-aminoethylamino-β-cyclodextrin

        Choi, Jae Min,Park, Kyeonghui,Lee, Benel,Jeong, Daham,Dindulkar, Someshwar D,Choi, Youngjin,Cho, Eunae,Park, Seyeon,Yu, Jae-hyuk,Jung, Seunho Elsevier 2017 Carbohydrate polymers Vol.163 No.-

Abstract

Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections; however, its limited aqueous solubility inhibits its broader clinical uses. This study investigated the complexation effect of mono-6-deoxy-6-aminoethylamino-β-cyclodextrin on the aqueous solubility and bioavailability of ciprofloxacin. During complexation, the oval-shaped cavity induced by mono-aminoethylamine substitution on the primary rim of β-cyclodextrin, was considered to be a key factor according to NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling studies. The ciprofloxacin with mono-6-deoxy-6-aminoethylamino-β-cyclodextrin complex was characterized using FE-SEM, DSC, FT-IR, T1 relaxation, 2D NOESY, and DOSY NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling studies. The solubility property of ciprofloxacin complexed with mono-6-deoxy-6-aminoethylamino-β-cyclodextrin was enhanced by seven-fold compared to that of pure ciprofloxacin. Furthermore antibacterial activity of that complex against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was enhanced and it clearly showed the growth inhibition. The mono-6-deoxy-6-aminoethylamino-β-cyclodextrin has the potential to be utilized for other oblong guest molecules besides ciprofloxacin based on the novel induced elliptical cavity.

Highlights

Mono-6-deoxy-6-aminoethylamino-β-cyclodextrin (Et-β-CD) was synthesized.

Oval-shaped cavity within Et-β-CD was induced by mono aminoethylamine substitution.

Ciprofloxacin (CIP)/Et-β-CD complex was thoroughly characterized.

CIP/Et-β-CD complex effectively enhanced the bioavailability and solubility of CIP.
