        Fluorescent Sizing Agents Based on Aggregation-Induced Emission Effect for Accurate Evaluation of Permeability and Coating Property

        Warp sizing is the most important process of weaving preparation in the textile industry. Permeating and coating ofsizing paste into/on warp yarns directly determine the quality of sized yarns. However, there are many significant drawbacks,such as low accuracy and narrow variety adaptability for sizing agents and warp yarns, in the traditional determinationmethod of permeation and coating property of sizing paste. Focusing on the problem, this investigation introducedaggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogen to prepare a fluorescent sizing agent. The interface of sizing agent in textilecould be accurately visualized by AIE fluorogen. The three indexes to indicate the permeability and coating property ofsizing paste, i.e. permeation percentage, coating percentage and integrity percentage of sizing film, have been determinedaccurately and conveniently. This investigation efficiently solves the difficult problem of evaluating permeation and coatingproperty of sizing paste and has a significant guiding function on accurate determination of the quality of sized yarns.

        Effects of Molecular Structure of Carboxyl-Containing Vinyl Monomers on Sizing Properties of Feather Keratin Graft Copolymer

        In order to study the effects of molecular structure of carboxyl-containing vinyl monomers on applicationperformance of feather keratin (FK) graft copolymer for warp sizing, three kinds of carboxyl acids, i.e. acrylic acid (AA),methacrylic acid (MAA), and itaconic acid (IA), were grafted onto molecular chains of FK through initiation of K2S2O8-NaHSO3 redox system. FK-g-PAA, FK-g-PMAA, and FK-g-PIA with similar grafting ratios around 31 % were prepared assizing agents. Major sizing properties of the three grafted keratins were studied in terms of water-solubility, apparentviscosity, contact angles of sizing paste on cotton fibers, mechanical properties of sizing film, and adhesion to fibers. It wasfound that sizing properties of the grafted FK strongly depended on molecular structure of the carboxyl-containing vinylmonomers. In view of overall performance of the grafted keratin sizes, the most appropriate carboxyl-containing vinylmonomer should be AA.

        Effects of Alkyl Chain Length of Aliphatic Dicarboxylic Ester on Degradation Properties of Aliphatic-Aromatic Water-Soluble Copolyesters for Warp Sizing

        In order to study the effects of alkyl chain length of aliphatic dicarboxylic ester (ADE) monomers on enzymatic and hydrolytic degradation properties of aliphatic-aromatic water-soluble copolyesters for warp sizing, dimethyl terephthalate, dimethyl isophthalate-5-sulfonic sodium, and ADE monomers with various alkyl chain lengths were copolymerized through a two-step method, i.e. transesterification and polycondensation. The enzymatic and hydrolytic degradation properties of the copolyesters were studied in terms of reduction rates of molecular weight, glass transition temperatures, and surface morphology after being cultivated for 24-96 h. It was found that, enzymatic degradation of the copolyesters strongly depended on alkyl chain length of ADE monomers. After being enzymatically degraded for 96 h, reduction rate of molecular weight of the copolyester using dimethyl malonate as ADE monomers could reach 22.2 %. Meanwhile, the hydrolytic degradation of the copolyesters was not directly related to the alkyl chain length.
