국내 의과대학 교수들의 Science Citation Index(SCI) 이용 실태 및 SCI 학술지에 대한 인지도(認知度) 조사 연구

본 연구는 국내 의학 연구자들의 SCI 이용 실태와 SCI 학술지에 대한 인지도를 규명하기 위하여, 국내 4개의 유수한 의과대학에 재직 중인 교수 902명 중 무작위 추출한 180명(20%)을 대상으로 설문지 조사를 시행하여 104명(회신율 57.8%)의 설문응답 내용을 분석하였다. 국내 의학자들은 필요한 의학 정보를 찾을 때 SCI는 별로 이용하지 않는다. 대신에 대부분의 국내 의학 도서관이 소장하고 있어 그 이용이 편리한 MEDLINE을 집중적으로 사용하고 있다. 또한, 국내의 많은 의학자들이 SCI 학술지의 impact factor list를 Journal Citation Reports(JCR)로, JCR을 색인지인 SCI로 혼동 또는 동일시하고 있었다. 즉 국내에서 SCI에 대한 지식과 용도는 색인의 기능이라기 보다는 impact factor 정보원의 기능이다. Impact factor에 대한 관심은 SCI 학술지에 논문을 투고해야 한다는 목적의식과 밀접하게 연계되어 있을 뿐이다. 본 연구의 대상이 되었던 의과대학들은 국내 타 의과대학보다 좋은 연구여건을 갖추었을 터인데도, 소속 교수들이 SCI, SCI 학술지 그리고 impact factor에 대하여 정보 부족 및 부재 현상을 겪고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 이들의 각 분야별 국내외 주요 학술지에 대한 주관적인 인지도는 인용문헌 분석에 의하여 선정된 SCI 학술지의 범위, impact factor 순위와 상당 부분 일치하고 있다. 그러므로 국내 의학 교수들에게 SCI 학술지에 논문을 발표하도록 독려하는 방안이다, SCI 학술지에 논문 게재 여부로 연구 업적을 평가하는 정책은 긍정적으로 검토되어 질 수 있겠다 A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the use of SCI and awareness of SCI source journals by faculty members at Korean medical colleges. 104 out of 180 faculty members randomly chosen from four prestigious medical colleges returned the questionnaires mailed to them. Korean medical researchers rarely used SCI as their main source of research information. They rather used the MEDLINE to seek the research information probably because they are easily available from their local libraries. Furthermore, many respondents mistakenly identified "SCI journals ranked by impact factor" lists found in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) with the SCI itself. That is, in Korean medical research community, the virtue of SCI is not as an index but as a source of SCI journal impact factor information. It is because the interest in impact factor is highly associated with the pressure to publish in one of those SCI source journals. The collected data shows that even the medical professors at these prestigious medical colleges suffer from the lack of knowledge and information about SCI, SCI source journals and their impact factors. Nontheless, core journal titles of a medical specialty selected by Korean medical professors are mostly high-impact journals of its field(i.e., belong to the upper 1/3 zone ranked by impact factor). Within each specialty, the journal ranks assigned to the selected core journals by the respondents agree with the ranks by SCI journals as defined in this study is in good standing. Therefore, a policy of a medical college to require medical professors to publish in SCI journals to be promoted or a policy to evaluate a researcher's work by the fact that his research papers are published in SCI journals can be positively pursued

Development of Medical Journal Publication in Korea

In the first part of the present paper, medical journals which had been or are published in Korea we examined by period in order to show the development of medical journal publication in Korea and to capture the characteristics that might have influenced medical journals currently published in Korea. In the second part, the characteristics of the scholarly medical journals currently published in Korea, based on 125 journals listed in the Appendix, are analyzed and discussed.

The Science Citation Index(SCI) and the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) published by the Institute for Scientific Information, Inc. are introduced and reviewed in detail for the purpose of urging Korean scientists to use them in a constructive manner. The SCI is a collective and systematic representation of citations appearing in scientific articles. Therefore scientists should make a usage of it to acquire previously published works of their interest. The JCR is a statistical report which analyzes source items and the citations covered in SCI. It helps science policy of affiliated scientists. Consequently, JCR helps policy makers to make efficient policies. It must be warned that the SCI and/or JCR should not be indiscriminately used to evaluate the scientific activities of individual scientist.

1990년 이후 SCI 한국의학논문의 수는 급증하고 있다. 이러한 증가추세를 주도하고 있는 국내의학자들의 SCI 학술지 이용은 그들의 연구에 필수적인 것이기 때문에, SCI 학술지에 대한 관심과 이용이 현격히 증가하고 있다. 또한, 의학연구자들이 국내 의학도서관을 통하여 SCI 학술지를 이용할 수 있게 만드는 것은 한국의학의 발전에 절대적으로 필요한 것이다. 본 연구는 국내 의학도서관의 의학학술지 관련 정보서비스 업무에 활용할 수 있도록, 한국의학논문이 게재된 SCI 학술지의 제반 특성을 고찰하고 이들 SCI 학술지의 국내 의학도서관 소장상황을 조사 분석하였다. 1990년에서 1995년 사이에 한국의학논문이 게재된 SCI 학술지는 전체 SCI 학술지의 약 45%에 이른다. 그런데 한국의학논문이 게재된 SCI 학술지의 20% 정도를 국내 의학도서관들이 전혀 소장하고 있지 않으며, 10% 정도는 1개 의학도서관만이 소장하고 있다. 국내의 많은 의학도서관들이 소장한 SCI 학술지는 주로 임상의학분야의 학술지, 미국에서 발행되는 학술지, 창간되지 오래된 전통 있는 학술지들이다. 반대로 국내 의학도서관에 소장되어 있지 않은 학술지는 주로 기초의학분야의 학술지, 미국 이외의 국가에서 발행되는 학술지, 역사가 짧은 학술지들로 나타났다. 국내 의학연구자들이 논문을 발표하는 학술지는 그 분야의 국내 연구자들이 활용하고 있는 학술지일 것이므로, 한국의학논문이 발표된 SCI 학술지임에도 불구하고 국내 의학도서관이 전혀 소장하고 있지 않은 200여종의 SCI 학술지는 그 연구자가 속한 기관의 도서관만이라도 소장하는 것이 바람직할 것이다. 그리고 현재 한국의학도서관협의회를 구심점으로 활발히 운영되고 있는 자료의 상호대차제도를 통하여, 이러한 SCI 학술지를 적극적으로 활용하는 방안을 모색해야 할 것이다.

도서관 정보이용교육: Cyber 강좌 개발과 실제 운영

숙명여자대학교에서는 2004학년도 2학기부터 1학년 교양필수 과목인 "글쓰기와 읽기" 과목을 수강하는 모든 학생들이, "도서관 정보이용교육: Cyber 강좌"를 수강한 후 온라인 퀴즈문제를 풀고 과제물을 제출하여 인증을 받도록 하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 "도서관 정보이용교육: Cyber 강좌"의 개발 및 시행을 주관하고 있는 숙명여대 도서관의 강좌 개발배경 및 개발과정, 내용구성 및 구현방법 그리고 실제 운영현황을 서술함으로써, 이 cyber 강좌가 빠르게 그리고 성공적으로 숙명여대의 특화 프로그램으로 정착한 요인을 분석하였다. 또한 cyber 강좌 학습관리시스템(LMS: Learning Management System)의 제반 기술적 문제점과 cyber 강좌 시행의 실제적인 문제점 등을 분석하여 향후 개선책을 제시하였다. Sookmyung Women's University Library developed a Cyber Learning Program for Information Literacy Education in the Fall semester of 2004. The program was enforced as a pass/fail prerequisite of the "Reading & Writing", a compulsory course for the first-year students. The paper describes why and how the university reached to the decision to initiate such a program. It identifies the factors which contributed to the early success of the program by analyzing the contents development process and the actual course management process. Suggestions for further developments is made by analyzing the technical and procedural difficulties faced using the Learning Management System(LMS).

SCI에 등재된 한국 학술지를 정의하는 방법에 대한 연구

본 연구의 목적은 SCI와 같은 국제적인 데이터베이스에 등재된 학술지 중에서 한 나라의 학술지를 찾아내고 구분하는 기준이 어떤 것들이 있으며, 또 이러한 기준이 그 나라의 학술지를 모두 찾을 수 있는지에 대한 검증을 하는 것이다. 학술지 발행국, 학술지 편집 및 발행 주체 학술지명에 한국과 관련한 고유한 단어 포함여부, 한국 주소 논문이 많은 학술지 등 4가지 기준에 의거하여 SCI와 JCR 데이터베이스를 검색하고 학술지 웹사이트 등 관련 자료를 추적하였다. 그 결과 2006년도 SCI 등재 한국 학술지는 모두 40종인 것으로 나타났다. SCI에서 학술지 발행국을 한국으로 처리한 것은 38종, 외국출판사에서 발행하나학술지 편집주체가 한국의 학회인 학술지는 2종, JCR 2006에서 검색 가능한 것은 36종, 한국 관련 고유명사가 학술지명에 나타나는 학술지는 11종이고, 한국 주소 논문이 많은 SCI 학술지 20위 안에는 9종이 그리고 500위 안에는 36종이 포함되었다.
