        Performance Analysis of Cost Effective Portable Solar Photovoltaic Water Pumping System

        Solar water pumping system (SWPS) is reliable and beneficial for Indian farmers in irrigation and crop production without accessing utility. The capability of easy installation and deployment, makes it an attractive option in remote areas without grid access. The selection of portable solar based pumps is pertaining to its longer life and economic viability due to lower running cost. The work presented in this manuscript intends to demonstrate performance analysis of portable systems. Consequent investigation reveals PSWS as the emerging option for rural household and marginal farmers. This can be attributed to the fact that, a considerable portion (around 45.7%) of the country’s land is farmland and irrigation options are yet to reach farmers who entirely rely on rain water at present for harvesting of the crops. According to census 2010-2011 tube wells are the main source for irrigation amongst all other sources followed by canals. Out of the total 64.57-million-hectare net irrigation area, 48.16% is accounted by small and marginal holdings, 43.77% by semi-medium and medium holdings, and 8.07% by large holdings. As per 2015-16 census data, nearly 100 million farming households would struggle to make ends meet. The work included in this manuscript, presents the performance of different commercial brands and different technologies of DC surface solar water micro pumping systems have been studied (specifically, the centrifugal and reciprocating type pumps have been considered for analysis). The performance of the pumping systems has been analyzed and data is evaluated in terms of quantity of water impelled for specific head. The reciprocating pump has been observed to deliver the best system efficiency.

      • A New Remote User Authentication Scheme based on Graphical Password using Smart Card

        Remote user authentication schemes provide a system to verify the legitimacy of remote users’ login request over insecure communication channel. Since last few years many authentication schemes have been proposed including several new features and ideas. But, due to the advancement of computational process they are suffering from various possible attacks. This is the reason because of which attaining the security becomes a prime issue and major challenge among the researchers. In this paper, we have proposed a new user friendly authentication scheme that can provide the higher security at lower computational cost. This scheme provides extra level of security by adopting the user-defined image for password generation. Finally, the security analysis and performance evaluation are made to proof the efficiency of our scheme.

      • An Improved Biometric-based Multi-server Authentication Scheme Using Smart Card

        To protect the resources from unauthorized users, the remote user authentication have become an essential part in the communication network. Currently, smart card-based remote user authentication for multi-server environment is a widely used and researched method. Remote user authentication for multi-server environment has resolved the problem of users to manage the different identities and passwords. Recently, Mishra et al. proposed a multi-server authenticated key agreement scheme using smart cards, where they claim that their scheme is secure enough and could resist the various well known attacks. However, in this paper, we have shown that their scheme is not secure as they have claimed and can suffer from impersonation attacks and stolen smart card attack. Later in the paper, we propose an improved multi-server authentication scheme using smart cards, which not only overcomes the mentioned weaknesses but also can provide more functionality features.

      • Hardcore Smoking in Three South-East Asian Countries: Results from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey

        Background: Hardcore smoking is represented by a subset of daily smokers with high nicotine dependence, inability to quit and unwillingness to quit. Estimating the related burden could help us in identifying a high risk population prone to tobacco induced diseases and improve cessation planning for them. This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of hardcore smoking in three South-East Asian countries and discussed its implication for smoking cessation intervention in this region. Materials and Methods: Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) data of India, Bangladesh and Thailand were analyzed to quantify the hardcore smoking prevalence in the region. On the basis of review, an operational definition of hardcore smoking was adopted that includes (1) current daily smoker, (2) no quit attempt in the past 12 months of survey or last quit attempt of less than 24 hours duration, (3) no intention to quit in next 12 months or not interested in quitting, (4) time to first smoke within 30 minutes of waking up, and (5) knowledge of smoking hazards. Logistic regression analysis was carried out using hardcore smoking status as response variable and gender, type of residence, occupation, education, wealth index and age-group as possible predictors. Results: There were 31.3 million hardcore smokers in the three Asian countries. The adult prevalence of hardcore smoking in these countries ranges between 3.1% in India to 6% in Thailand. These hardcore smokers constitute 18.3-29.7% of daily smokers. The logistic regression model indicated that age, gender, occupation and wealth index are the major predictors of hardcore smoking with varied influence across countries. Conclusions: Presence of a higher number of hardcore smoking populations in Asia is a major public health challenge for tobacco control and cancer prevention. There is need of intensive cessation interventions with due consideration of contextual predictors.

        Development of Large Area Nanostructured Silicon-Hydrogen Alloy Material with Improved Stability for Solar Cell Application by Argon Dilution Method

        Here we have presented the results of large area (30 × 30 cm2) siliconhydrogenalloy material and solar cell by argon dilution method. As analternative to hydrogen dilution, argon dilution method has been appliedto develop single junction solar cell with appreciable stability. Optimization of deposition conditions revealed that 95% argon dilutiongives a nanostructured material with improved transport property andless light induced degradation. The minority carrier diffusion length (Ld)and mobility-lifetime (μτ) product of the material with 95% argondilution degrades least after light soaking. Also the density of states(DOS) below conduction level reveals that this material is lessdefective. Solar cell with this argon diluted material has been fabricatedwith all the layers deposited by argon dilution method. Finally we havecompared the argon diluted solar cell results with the optimizedhydrogen diluted solar cell. Light soaking study proves that it is possibleto develop stable solar cell on large area by argon dilution method andthat the degradation of argon diluted solar cell is less than that ofhydrogen diluted one.
