The purpose of this paper is to investigate the issue concerning the order of the books of the New Testament. It has two research questions. First, did the early church have the only one arrangement of the books of the New Testament? Many lists of an arrangement of the New Testament will be explored in comprehensive analysis: overall aspect and partial aspect. (1) In the overall aspect, arrangements of the six main sections of the New Testament (Gospels, Acts, Pauline Epistles, Hebrews, Catholic/General Epistles, and Apocalypse) are classified into ten types. And (2) in the partial aspect, the arrangements within each section are categorized into many types. This study comes to the conclusion that there existed various arrangements of the books in the early church, and the present universal arrangement of the books in the New Testament can be found in Great Bible (1539), Belgic Confession (1561) and Westminster Confession of Faith (1647). Second, what principle does the present universal arrangement of the books of New Testament has in it? The arrangement has three stages. And each stage has its criterion of arrangement. (1) The first stage is an genre classification of the New Testament. At this stage the genres are arranged by the criterion of a temporal order. (2) The second stage is an group classification within the genres. At this stage the groups are ordered by the criterion of decreasing length. (3) The third stage is an arrangement of each book within the group classification. Each book within the groups is arranged by the criterion of decreasing length, with multiple volumes of the New Testament arranged after a single book of the New Testament.
