Predicting the failure modes of monotonically loaded reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints

        Bakir, Pelin G.,Boduroglu, Hasan M. Techno-Press 2002 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.14 No.3

This study aims at postulating a simple methodology for predicting the failure modes of monotonically loaded reinforced concrete beam-column joints. All the factors that affect the failure modes of joints are discussed in detail using an experimental database of monotonically loaded exterior beam-column joints. The relative contributions of the strut and truss mechanisms to joint shear strength are determined based on the test results. A simple design equation for the beam longitudinal reinforcement ratio for joints with low, medium and high amount of stirrups is developed. The factors influencing the failure modes of monotonically loaded exterior beam-column joints are investigated in detail. Design charts that predict the failure modes of exterior beam-column connections both with and without stirrups are developed. Experimental data are compared with the design charts. The results show that the simple methodology gives very accurate predictions of the failure modes.

Instrumentation and system identification of a typical school building in Istanbul

Bakir, Pelin Gundes Techno-Press 2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.43 No.2

This study presents the findings of the structural health monitoring and the real time system identification of one of the first large scale building instrumentations in Turkey for earthquake safety. Within this context, a thorough review of steps in the instrumentation, monitoring is presented and seismic performance evaluation of structures using both nonlinear pushover and nonlinear dynamic time history analysis is carried out. The sensor locations are determined using the optimal sensor placement techniques used in NASA for on orbit modal identification of large space structures. System identification is carried out via the stochastic subspace technique. The results of the study show that under ambient vibrations, stocky buildings can be substantially stiffer than what is predicted by the finite element models due to the presence of a large number of partitioning walls. However, in a severe earthquake, it will not be safe to rely on this resistance due to the fact that once the partitioning walls crack, the bare frame contributes to the lateral stiffness of the building alone. Consequently, the periods obtained from system identification will be closer to those obtained from the FE analysis. A technique to control the validity of the proportional damping assumption is employed that checks the presence of phase difference in displacements of different stories obtained from band pass filtered records and it is confirmed that the "proportional damping assumption" is valid for this structure. Two different techniques are implemented for identifying the influence of the soil structure interaction. The first technique uses the transfer function between the roof and the basement in both directions. The second technique uses a pre-whitening filter on the data obtained from both the basement and the roof. Subsequently the impulse response function is computed from the scaled cross correlation between the input and the output. The overall results showed that the structure will satisfy the life safety performance level in a future earthquake but some soil structure interaction effects should be expected in the North South direction.

The combined deterministic stochastic subspace based system identification in buildings

Bakir, Pelin Gundes Techno-Press 2011 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.38 No.3

The Combined Deterministic Stochastic Subspace based System Identification Technique (CDSSSIT) is a powerful input-output system identification technique which is known to be always convergent and numerically stable. The technique determines a Kalman state sequence from the projection of the output-input data. The state space matrices are determied subsequently from this Kalman state sequence using least squares. The objective of this paper is to examine the efficiency of the CDSSSIT in identifying the modal parameters (frequencies and mode shapes) of a stiff structure. The results show that the CDSSSIT predicts the modal parameters of stiff buildings quite accurately but is very sensitive to the location of sensors.

Seismic resistance and mechanical behaviour of exterior beam-column joints with crossed inclined bars

        Bakir, P.G. Techno-Press 2003 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.16 No.4

Attempts at improving beam-column joint performance has resulted in non-conventional ways of reinforcement such as the use of the crossed inclined bars in the joint area. Despite the wide accumulation of test data, the influence of the crossed inclined bars on the shear strength of the cyclically loaded exterior beam-column joints has not yet been quantified and incorporated into code recommendations. In this study, the investigation of joints has been pursued on two different fronts. In the first approach, the parameters that influence the behaviour of the cyclically loaded beam-column joints are investigated. Several parametric studies are carried out to explore the shear resisting mechanisms of cyclically loaded beam-column joints using an experimental database consisting of a large number of joint tests. In the second approach, the mechanical behaviour of joints is investigated and the equations for the principal tensile strain and the average shear stress are derived from joint mechanics. It is apparent that the predictions of these two approaches agree well with each other. A design equation that predicts the shear strength of the cyclically loaded exterior beam-column joints is proposed. The design equation proposed has three major differences from the previously suggested design equations. First, the influence of the bond conditions on the joint shear strength is considered. Second, the equation takes the influence of the shear transfer mechanisms of the crossed inclined bars into account and, third, the equation is applicable on joints with high concrete cylinder strength. The proposed equation is compared with the predictions of the other design equations. It is apparent that the proposed design equation predicts the joint shear strength accurately and is an improvement on the existing code recommendations.

A comparative study on the subspace based system identification techniques applied on civil engineering structures

Bakir, Pelin Gundes,Alkan, Serhat,Eksioglu, Ender Mete Techno-Press 2011 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.7 No.2

The Subspace based System Identification Techniques (SSIT) have been very popular within the research circles in the last decade due to their proven superiority over the other existing system identification techniques. For operational (output only) modal analysis, the stochastic SSIT and for operational modal analysis in the presence of exogenous inputs, the combined deterministic stochastic SSIT have been used in the literature. This study compares the application of the two alternative techniques on a typical school building in Istanbul using 100 Monte Carlo simulations. The study clearly shows that the combined deterministic stochastic SSIT performs superior to the stochastic SSIT when the techniques are applied on noisy data from low to mid rise stiff structures.

Experimental study of the effect of the glass fibers on reducing collapse of a collapsible soil

        Bakir, Nassima,Abbeche, Khelifa,Panczer, Gerard Techno-Press 2017 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.12 No.1

Collapsible soil presents a porous unsaturated structure, its sudden settlement after humidification, without supplementary charge, can be of a big nuisance for the foundations and therefore for the constructions built on it. To improve its structure and limit its instability, samples of laboratory reconstituted soil, with different percentages of water contents and compacted at different compaction energies, were treated with glass-fiber. The study of the mechanical behavior was performed by oedometer tests. The microstructure was explored by the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results obtained show clearly the efficiency of the treatment with glass fiber on reducing the collapsibility of such soil.

Displacements, damage measures and response spectra obtained from a synthetic accelerogram processed by causal and acausal Butterworth filters

        Gundes Bakir, Pelin,Richard, J. Vaccaro Techno-Press 2006 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.23 No.4

The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability of strong motion records processed by causal and acausal Butterworth filters in comparison to the results obtained from a synthetic accelerogram. For this purpose, the fault parallel component of the Bolu record of the Duzce earthquake is modeled with a sum of exponentially damped sinusoidal components. Noise-free velocities and displacements are then obtained by analytically integrating the synthetic acceleration model. The analytical velocity and displacement signals are used as a standard with which to judge the validity of the signals obtained by filtering with causal and acausal filters and numerically integrating the acceleration model. The results show that the acausal filters are clearly preferable to the causal filters due to the fact that the response spectra obtained from the acausal filters match the spectra obtained from the simulated accelerogram better than that obtained by causal filters. The response spectra are independent from the order of the filters and from the method of integration (whether analytical integration after a spline fit to the synthetic accelerogram or the trapezoidal rule). The response spectra are sensitive to the chosen corner frequency of both the causal and the acausal filters and also to the inclusion of the pads. Accurate prediction of the static residual displacement (SRD) is very important for structures traversing faults in the near-fault regions. The greatest adverse effect of the high pass filters is their removal of the SRD. However, the noise-free displacements obtained by double integrating the synthetic accelerogram analytically preserve the SRD. It is thus apparent that conventional high pass filters should not be used for processing near-fault strong-motion records although they can be reliably used for far-fault records if applied acausally. The ground motion parameters such as ARIAS intensity, HUSID plots, Housner spectral intensity and the duration of strong-motion are found to be insensitive to the causality of filters.

NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF THE NONLINEAR KORTEWEG-DE VRIES EQUATION BY USING CHEBYSHEV WAVELET COLLOCATION METHOD

        ( YASEMIN BAKIR ) 호남수학회 2021 호남수학학술지 Vol.43 No.3

In this study, a numerical method deals with the Chebyshev wavelet collocation and Adomian decomposition methods are proposed for solving Korteweg-de Vries equation. Integration of the Chebyshev wavelets operational matrices is derived. This problem is reduced to a system of non-linear algebraic equations by using their operational matrix. Thus, it becomes easier to solve KdV problem. The error estimation for the Chebyshev wavelet collocation method and ADM is investigated. The proposed method’s validity and accuracy are demonstrated by numerical results. When the exact and approximate solutions are compared, for non-linear or linear partial differential equations, the Chebyshev wavelet collocation method is shown to be acceptable, efficient and accurate.
