        A New Maximum Inductive Power Transmission Capacity Tracking Method

        In certain applications, such as IPT-based EV charger (IPTEC), any variation in alignment and distance between pickup and charger primary leads to a change in leakage and magnetic impedance magnitudes. The power transmission capacity is not always at the maximum level because of these variations. This study proposes a new low-cost tracking method that achieves the Maximum Inductive Power Transmission Capacity (MIPTC). Furthermore, in the proposed method, the exchange of information between load and source is not required. For an application such as IPTEC, the load detected by the IPTEC varies continuously with time because of the change in state of the charge. This load variation causes a significant variation in IPT resonant circuit voltage gain. However, the optimized charging output voltage should be kept constant. From the analysis of the behavior of the IPT circuit at different working frequencies and load conditions, a MIPTC operation point that is independent of load condition can be identified. Finally, the experimental results of a developed prototype IPT circuit test show the performance of the proposed method.

      • ERCC1 Expression Can Predict Response to Platinum-Based Induction Chemotherapy in Head and Neck Cancer Cases

        To investigate whether excision repair cross complementing-group1 (ERCC1) expression status could serve as a bio-predictor of response to platinum-based induction chemotherapy for head and neck cancers (HNCs) patients with a diagnosis of epithelial HNC were studied retrospectively. Paraffin embedded tumor samples of the patients were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to determine ERCC1 expression status and its correlation with response to platinum-based induction chemotherapy was investigated. Of 44 included patients, 33 were male (75%) and 11 were female (25%) with a mean age of 53 years. Some 36% of patients whose tumor samples had high ERCC1 expression showed no response to induction chemotherapy. The value for patients with low ERCC1 expression was 9% and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.03). The ERCC1 expression state did not significantly vary between patient groups according to sex, age, primary tumor site, and tumor and node stage. Our study indicates that ERCC1 expression status detected by RT-PCR might serve as a bio-predictor of response to platinum-based induction chemotherapy for epithelial HNCs.

        Incorporation of vapor permeation process to esterification reaction of propionic acid and isopropanol for performance improvement

        A commercial tubular zeolite membrane (NaA) was employed in a vapor permeation system to dehydrate the reaction mixture during the esterification of propionic acid with isopropanol. The reaction was performed in a batch reactor, using Amberlyst 15 as a catalyst with different weight fractions relative to propionic acid. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the alcohol-to-acid molar ratio on the performance of the hybrid process. The integration of the chemical reaction with the vapor permeation process significantly enhanced the conversion of the reversible esterification reaction. It was observed that contrary to the effect of increasing alcohol-to-acid molar ratio from 1 : 1 to 1.5 : 1, the acid conversion and the permeated water flux decreased when the reactants molar ratio increased from 1.5 : 1 to 3 : 1. This effect was due to the reducing effect of reaction mixture composition on the boiling point and reaction and evaporation rates during the hybrid process. Also, increasing catalyst loading had noticeable influence on the acid conversion and the permeated water flux.

        The Role of Routine Preoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Ten Years Review

        Study Design: Prospective study. Purpose: To determine the role of routine preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect the incidence and risk factors for intraspinal anomalies in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Overview of Literature: The incidence and risk factors for intraspinal anomalies in patients with idiopathic scoliosis are controversial, and the indications for preoperative MRI in these patients vary among centers. Methods: Information on patients with idiopathic scoliosis who were surgical candidates over 10 years (age at presentation, sex, magnitude and apex of major curve, intraspinal anomalies detected by MRI, and neurological examination results) were recorded, the patients were grouped according to the intraspinal anomaly, and the data were analyzed. Results: Of the 271 patients with idiopathic scoliosis, 27 had neuroaxial abnormalities (9.9%). Of these 27 patients, 14 (52%) underwent a neurosurgical procedure. Significant differences were observed in the frequency of early disease onset and male sex (p <0.05) between the group of patients with neuroaxial abnormalities on preoperative MRI and those who did not have a cord anomaly. No difference was detected in the magnitude or direction of the curve. Conclusions: Neuroaxial abnormalities in patients with idiopathic scoliosis and a normal neurological examination were highly frequent (9.9%). Missing these abnormalities before surgery could inflict catastrophic postoperative complications. The incidence of neuroaxial abnormalities was higher in male patients and in those with early onset disease. Thus, MRI is essential for all patients with idiopathic scoliosis who require medical intervention.

      • Hygro-thermo-mechanical bending of laminated composite plates using an innovative computational four variable refined quasi-3D HSDT model

        The current investigation presents hygro-thermo-mechanical analysis of simply supported anti-symmetric composite plates by using an original computational four unknown’s quasi-3D inverse tangent hyperbolic theory. The developed formulations take into account the thickness stretching effect and contain indeterminate integral variables to reduce the number of unknowns. The present model ensures the transverse shear stresses nullity at the top and the bottom surfaces without using any shear correction factor. The governing equations are determined with the help of virtual work principle. The analytical solution of the hygro-thermo-mechanical analysis is derived via Navier’s procedure. The accuracy and efficiency of current model is checked by comparing the results with others models found in the literature. Several numerical results are presented in graphs form to show the effects of the aspect, geometry and modulus ratio on the stress and transverse displacement of the simply supported anti-symmetric composite plates.

        Pregabalin versus Gabapentin Efficacy in the Management of Neuropathic Pain Associated with Failed Back Surgery Syndrome

        Objective : Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) is a common long-term complication following spine surgeries characterized by chronic persistent pain; different strategies of management were employed to deal with it. This clinical trial aims to compare the efficacy of Pregabalin and Gabapentin in the management of this condition. Methods : A double-blind, randomized, comparative study (clinical trial registry NCT05324761 on 11th April 2022) with two parallel arms with Pregabalin and Gabapentin were used in arms one and two, respectively. Visual analog scale was used for basal and endpoint assessment of pain. T-test and analysis of covariance were used to deal with different variables. A pairwise test was used to compare pairs of means. Results : Of 66 patients referred to the trial, 64 were eligible, with 60 patients completing the 30 days trial. Both pregabalin and gabapentin effectively reduce pain, with significant p-values of 0.001 for each group. However, the pregabalin group was superior to gabapentin in pain reduction (p=0.001). Gender was an insignificant factor (p=0.574 and p=0.445 for the pregabalin and gabapentin groups, respectively, with a non-significant reduction (p=0.393) for both groups in total. Location of stenosis before surgery and type of surgery performed show non-significant effect on pain reduction for both groups. Conclusion : Both pregabalin and gabapentin effectively and safely relieve neuropathic pain associated with FBSS; pregabalin was significantly more effective irrespective of the patients’ gender.

        Thermodynamic Evaluation of a Direct Expansion Ground-Sourced Heat Pump with Horizontal Ground Heat Exchangers Using Advanced Exergy Analysis

        This paper deals with the advanced exergetic analysis of a horizontal direct-expansion ground sourced CO 2 heat pump operating in a transcritical cycle. The cycle is thermodynamically modeled in Engineering Equation Solver (EES) considering the pressure drops in both high and low temperature heat exchangers, and the system is to provide a fixed heating load. Conventional exergy analysis orderly suggests a compressor, expansion valve, gas cooler and ground heat exchanger to be considered for system improvement, while tracing exergy destruction of all components in detail demonstrates true improvement potential of each and all components and the system as a whole and offers a different order. Advanced exergy analysis points out that the compressor is directly and indirectly responsible for 56% of the overall exergy destruction generated in the cycle, confirming the detrimental role of this component in the system. The second influential component is recognized to be a ground heat exchanger accounting for 20% exergy destruction of the compressor as well as submitting 89% avoidability in its own exergy destruction, and expansion valve proves to be the last option for system improvement according to this analysis.

        Translation of Taboos in Dubbed American Crime Movies into Persian

        This study aimed at investigating the strategies which Iranian AV translators use for rendition of taboo language in American crime movies dubbed into Persian. The required bilingual corpus was purposively selected based on a pre-determined set of criteria. During data collection, drawing on a Persian-specific set of types of taboo language, the 642 instances in the selected sample of four American crime movies were detected and recorded. Having analyzed the strategies in rendering the original taboos into Persian, a model of four basic strategies was empirically achieved–namely, a) translating the source culture taboo to a target culture taboo, b) deletion of the source culture taboo, c) substituting the target culture taboo with a target culture non-taboo, and d) rendering the source culture taboo to a target culture euphemism. The descriptive statistics showed that the general approach taken by the AV translators was toning down the force of taboo language, following the target culture norms especially by deleting the source culture taboo as the most frequent strategy or replacing it by a non-taboo or euphemism, even though nearly one-thirds of the taboos were kept in the dubbed target product. The findings are useful data within descriptive translation studies; nevertheless, they cannot be generalized since the study is limited by a relatively small corpus and a non-probability sampling technique.

        Is Facet Tropism Associated with Increased Risk of Disc Herniation in the Lumbar Spine?

        Study Design: Retrospective case control study. Purpose: In current study, we compared the incidence of facet tropism (FT) in patients with lumbar disc herniation and normal controls. Overview of Literature: It has been suggested that FT can be associated with increased risk of lumbar disc herniation. Methods: A total of 66 and 63 patients with L4/L5 and L5/S1 disc herniation, respectively, were evaluated in the present study. The control group comprised 61 normal subjects. Facet joint angle was measured using axial magnetic resonance images. The FT was defined as a difference of >10° between the right and left facet joints. The incidence of FT was compared between patients and controls. We also investigated the relationship between facet orientation (sagittal or coronal) and side of disc herniation. Results: The incidence of FT at the L4/L5 level was significantly higher in patients with disc herniation (48.5% vs. 26.2%, p =0.01), while it was found to be the same at the L5/S1 level in patients and controls (50.8% vs. 36%, p =0.098). Among the 64 patients with FT, intervertebral disc herniation occurred significantly toward the more sagittally oriented facet joint in 41 patients (p <0.05). Conclusions: FT is associated with increased risk of L4/L5 intervertebral disc herniation, but not at the L5/S1 level. In addition, disc herniation occurred toward the more sagittally oriented facet joint.
