Pathogenicity of Bacillus Strains to Cotton Seedlings and Their Effects on Some Biochemical Components of the Infected Seedlings

        Aly A. Aly,Omima M. El-Mahdy,Marian M. Habeb,Abeer Elhakem,Amal A. Asran,Maryan M. Youssef,Heba I. Mohamed,Rania S. Hanafy 한국식물병리학회 2022 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.38 No.2

Pathogenicity of eight Bacillus strains to seedlings of four cotton cultivars was evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Each of the tested cultivars was individually treated with powdered inoculum of each bacterial strain. Untreated seeds were planted as control treatments in autoclaved soil. Effects of the tested strains on levels and activities of some biochemical components of the infected seedlings were also assayed. The biochemical components included total soluble sugars, total soluble proteins, total free amino acids, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, phenols, and lipid peroxidation. ANOVA showed that Bacillus strain (B) was a very highly significant source of variation in damping-off and dry weight. Cotton cultivar (V) was a nonsignificant source of variation in damping-off while it was a significant source of variation in dry weight. B × V interaction was a significant source of variation in damping- off and a nonsignificant source of variation in dry weight. Bacillus strain was the most important source of variation as it accounted for 59.36 and 64.99% of the explained (model) variation in damping-off and dry weight, respectively. The lack of significant correlation between levels and activities of the assayed biochemical components and incidence of damping-off clearly demonstrated that these biochemical components were not involved in the pathogenicity of the tested strains. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the pathogenicity of the tested strains could be due to the effect of cell wall degrading enzymes of pathogenic toxins. Based on the results of the present study, Bacillus strains should be considered in studying the etiology of cotton seedling damping-off.

Evaluation of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils changes across the Late Paleocene/Early Eocene transition at Nag El-Quda section, Upper Nile Valley, Egypt

Mohamed Youssef Ali 한국지질과학협의회 2015 Geosciences Journal Vol.19 No.4

A quantitative study of calcareous nannofossils, planktonic, and benthic foraminiferal assemblages have been performed on fifty six samples collected from ~40 m interval across the Paleocene/ Eocene transition at Nag El-Quda section in Upper Nile Valley, Egypt. I study this interval to evaluate the faunal and floral changes across the P/E transition. Four biozones of calcareous nannofossils and seven planktonic biozones have been recorded. The benthic foraminifera extinction event (BFEE) and the characteristic datum of both calcareous nannofossils, planktonic foraminifera, have been recognized. The absence of deep-sea benthic foraminifera (Stensioeina beccariiformis), the low abundance of (Angulogavelinella avnimelechi and Gavelinella rubiginosus) and increasing dominance of shallowmarine taxa (buliminids, Loxostomoides applinae) indicate deposition of the interval in shallow water environments (100–150 m depth). The benthic foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by Loxostomoides applinae, buliminids, and Lenticulina spp and indicate dysoxic conditions. Quantitative analyses have revealed a change in the species richness and fluctuations in abundance of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils.

Microalgal diversity in response to differential heavy metals-contaminated wastewater levels at North Nile Delta, Egypt

Elmousel Maha Youssef Kamal,El-Mohsnawy Eithar,Al-Sodany Yassin Mohamed,Eltanahy Eladl Galal,Abbas Mohamed Ali,Ali Awatif Saad 한국생태학회 2023 Journal of Ecology and Environment Vol.47 No.3

Background: The most hazardous wastewater sources in the northern part of the Middle Nile Delta, Egypt; receiving a massive amount of agricultural, industrial, and sewage drainage are Kitchener drain which is one of the tallest drainage systems, and Burullus Lake which represents the 2nd largest Egyptian coastal lake. Results: The current work is to determine the abundance and frequency of cyanophytes, chlorophytes, and bacillariophytes and the correlation between them and environmental abiotic components. Among sixty nine microalgal species, 19 species are belong Cyanophyta, 26 belong Chlorophyta and 24 belong Bacillariophyta. Genus Scenedesmus (Chlorophyta) was the most abundant in the study area (13 species), followed by Genus Oscillatoria (9 species) and Genus Navicula (7 species). Nostoc muscorum and Chlorella vulgaris were the most common and recorded in all sites (100% of the locations) under study. The application of the two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) and detrended correspondence analysis revealed agglomerating of 4 groups (communities) at 4th level of classification and reasonable segregation between these groups. Zinc, cadmium and lead were showed the highest levels (0.26 ± 0.03, 0.26 ± 0.06, and 0.17 ± 0.01 ppm, respectively). Conclusions: The correlation analysis between water and community variables indicated a high negative correlation of total algae richness with nickel (r = –0.936, p < 0.01). Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta were correlated negatively (r = –0.842, p < 0.01). However, Chlorophyta showed a negative richness with each of Ni and Pb (r = –0.965, –0.873, respectively) on one hand and a high positive correlation was revealed (r = 0.964) with all environmental variables on the other hand.

Traumatic cerebrospinal fluid leakage following septorhinoplasty

Youssef, Ahmed,Ahmed, Shahzad,Ibrahim, Ahmed Aly,Daniel, Mulvihill,Abdelfattah, Hisham M.,Morsi, Haitham Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2018 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.45 No.4

Septoplasty/septorhinoplasty is a common ear, nose and throat procedure offered for those patients with deviated septum who are suffering from nasal obstruction and functional or cosmetic problems. Although it is a basic and simple procedure, it could lead to catastrophic complications including major skull base injuries which result in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks. We describe two different cases of traumatic CSF leaks following septoplasty/septorhinoplasty at two different sites. The first patient suffered a CSF leak following septoplasty and presented to Alexandria University Hospital. The leak was still active at presentation and identified as coming from a defect in the roof of the sphenoid sinus and was repaired surgically. The second patient presented 4 days after her cosmetic septorhinoplasty with a CSF leak and significant pneumocephalus. She was managed conservatively. Understanding the anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses and implementing proper surgical techniques are crucial in preventing intracranial complications when performing either septoplasty or septorhinoplasty. A good quality computed tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses is a valuable investigation to avoid major complications especially CSF leaks following either procedure.

Correlation of High Cycle Fatigue Behavior of Circular and Square Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected to Shear Controlled Cyclic Loading

Ali Ahmed,Ahmed Mohammed Youssef Mohammed,Koichi Maekawa 대한토목학회 2021 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.25 No.5

In current design practice, mostly architectural needs govern the shape of reinforced concrete columns. There is a need to study and compare the load-deflection behavior and failure pattern of high strength reinforced concrete columns of different shapes. This paper presents a correlation between the performance of equivalent area circular and square columns subjected to shear controlled cyclic loading. Square and circular columns with equal cross-sectional area were experimentally tested in this research. Experimental results show that the maximum load, number of loading cycles and maximum deflection in case of square and circular columns were found to be close however, the final failure pattern was different. In case of columns without shear stirrups, the square column resisted 6.7% more loading cycles as compared to the circular column. However, the square column showed 19% lesser deflection at ultimate stage. In case of columns with shear stirrups, square column resisted only 9% more loading cycles as compared to circular column and exhibited similar ultimate deflection. The fatigue performance of equivalent area circular and square columns was found to be comparable in shear controlled conditions. However, the final failure pattern of circular columns shifted from shear to flexure near final failure.

Micro-Structure Analysis of Quasi-Static Crushing and Low-Velocity Impact Behavior of Graded Composite Metallic Foam Filled Tube

        Youssef Taraz Jamshidi,Ali Pourkamali Anaraki,Mojtaba Sadighi,Javad Kadkhodapour,Seyed Mohammad Hossein Mirbagheri,Behnaz Akhavan 대한금속·재료학회 2021 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.27 No.5

Foam filled tubes (FFT) are novel structures with high energy absorption, enhanced strength to weight ratio, and tailoringcapability. In the present paper, we have analyzed quasi-static uniaxial compression and low-velocity impact behavior of FFTwith closed-cell metallic foam cores and functionally graded densities both experimentally and numerically. Alporas foamswere manufactured using liquid state method with TiH2blowing agent. We prepared Specimens with graded compositionand densities by stacking of several layers of pure aluminum and A356 alloy Alporas foams with cubic geometry. We conductedseveral standard uniaxial compression experiments to determine the non-linear mechanical properties and hardening.Square aluminum tubes are manipulated to enhance the performance and tailoring specification of the structure. We generatedmicrostructural models using a hybrid 3D Voronoi diagram and CT-scan images to predict mechanical behavior numerically.Computed tomography is used to determine the inner cells morphological characterization. Also, the modified Kelvin cellwith a beam element in edge regions is manipulated to enhance accuracy. Comparing the quasi-static experiment and FEAresults show good accordance, and hence, we achieved the calibrated model. Finally, we used the numerical model in FFTtailoring and mechanical properties design.

Comparative Nonlinear Behavior of Corroded Circular and Square RC Columns

Ahmed Mohammed Youssef Mohammed,Ali Ahmed,Koichi Maekawa 대한토목학회 2020 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.24 No.7

This paper discusses performance of the reinforced concrete structures deteriorated by corrosion on basis of numerical simulation analysis. The purpose is to preliminarily investigate the idea of performance comparison of circular and square reinforced concrete columns under corroded conditions. Previous research carried out by the authors shows that equivalent area reinforced concrete (RC) columns exhibit similar load-displacement behavior under flexural and shear controlled conditions. The two types of columns deviate from this similarity after the corrosion of steel reinforcement present in the concrete. The change in the load-displacement behavior is highly dependent upon factors including the corrosion ratio, axial load, presence of web reinforcement etc., The experimentally verified 3D finite element modelling (FEM) program (COM3D) was used to investigate the seismic performance of the circular shaped and its equivalent area square shaped RC columns. The results show that the effect of mild corrosion (around 2% corrosion) on the load-displacement behavior of square RC columns is more significant as compared to circular RC columns at without axial load and at lesser main reinforcement ratio while a similar behavior or reverse trend is observed at higher main reinforcement ratios and for cases with 10% axial load. The effect of corrosion on the web reinforcement present in square columns is more pronounced as compared to circular columns at low main reinforcement ratios.

Performance Comparison of Circular and Square RC Columns under Monotonic Loading Conditions

Ahmed Mohammed Youssef Mohammed,Ali Ahmed,Koichi Maekawa 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.1

Current flexural and shear design methods for reinforced concrete members are mainly based upon the rectangular cross-sectional shape. A simplified new approach for designing circular cross sectional Reinforced Concrete (RC) members might be to convert them to equivalent area, square shapes. An experimental study was performed on reinforced concrete circular cross sections and equivalent area, rectangular cross sectional members. The RC members were tested under non linear monotonic loading conditions, under both flexural and shear controlled conditions. Furthermore, the 3D FEM package COM3D was used to simulate the nonlinear performance of circular and its equivalent area, square members. Experimental and analytical results show that the circular RC members and its equivalent square have similar nonlinear performance (load-deflection behavior) in both flexural and shear controlled failure conditions. A good agreement was found in nonlinear performance of main design criteria; initial stiffness, flexural capacity, and shear capacity of both types. Based upon these results, the proposed approach can be considered satisfactory.

Consecutive versus concomitant follicle-stimulating hormone and highly purified human menopausal gonadotropin: A milder response but better quality

Maghraby, Hassan Ali,Agameya, Abdel Fattah Mohamed,Swelam, Manal Shafik,El Dabah, Nermeen Ahmed,Ahmed, Ola Youssef The Korean Society for Reproductive Medicine 2022 Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine Vol.49 No.2

Objective: This study investigated the impact of two stimulation protocols using highly purified human menopausal gonadotropin (HP-hMG) on the endocrine profile, follicular fluid soluble Fas levels, and outcomes of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles. Methods: This prospective clinical trial included 100 normal-responder women undergoing ovarian stimulation for ICSI; 55 patients received concomitant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) plus HP-hMG from the start of stimulation, while 45 patients received FSH followed by HP-hMG during mid/late follicular stimulation. The primary outcome was the number of top-quality embryos. The secondary outcomes were the number and percentage of metaphase II (MII) oocytes and the clinical pregnancy rate. Results: The number of MII oocytes was significantly higher in the concomitant protocol (median, 13.0; interquartile range [IQR], 8.5-18.0 vs. 9.0 [8.0-13.0] in the consecutive protocol; p=0.009); however, the percentage of MII oocytes and the fertilization rate were significantly higher in the consecutive protocol (median, 90.91; IQR, 80.0-100.0 vs. 83.33 [75.0-93.8]; p=0.034 and median, 86.67; IQR, 76.9-100.0 vs. 77.78 [66.7-89.9]; p=0.028, respectively). No significant between-group differences were found in top-quality embryos (p=0.693) or the clinical pregnancy rate (65.9% vs. 61.8% in the consecutive vs. concomitant protocol, respectively). The median follicular fluid soluble Fas antigen level was significantly higher in the concomitant protocol (9,731.0 pg/mL; IQR, 6,004.5-10,807.6 vs. 6,350.2 pg/mL; IQR, 4,382.4-9,418.4; p=0.021). Conclusion: Personalized controlled ovarian stimulation using HP-hMG during the late follicular phase led to a significantly lower response, but did not affect the quality of ICSI.
