Vol.56 No.2
In Korean Buddhism, there is few one like Choeui Euisun(草衣意詢, 1786-1866) who had dipped into the diverse cultures. He was held in high esteem as the Daeseonjang(大禪匠, the great master of the zen Buddhism) of the late Chosun Dynasty Buddhism and was respected as not only the Jeungheungjo(中興祖, the father of the Korean tea ceremony restoration) but also the Daseong(茶聖, the great master of the tea ceremony) in the Korean tea ceremony. In addition, he was known as the talented person in various fields of poetry, calligraphy and painting(詩書畵). Furthermore, he had the distinguished ability in Beompae(梵唄, a kind of the Buddhism music). How do we explain poetry, calligraphy and painting of Choeui when we regard his zen philosophy as Daseonilmi(茶禪一味, the tea and the zen have the same taste.). Cheyong(體用, both the body and the action of an object) can not be separated. If the concept, Cheyong, is not two, one should tell that the zen and the tea are the bodies and that poetry, calligraphy and painting are the actions. Consequently, the zen, the tea, poetry, calligraphy and painting are the same. So we can not regard 'Choeui and the zen', 'Choeui and the tea', and 'Choeui and poetry, calligraphy and painting' as separate things. From this point of view, it is obvious that he is the great zen monk, the man who led the tea culture and the poetry monk when he composed a poem with the sadaebu (士大夫, the upper ranks of society in the Chosun Dynasty). Thus he was the representative man who promoted the development of the culture of the time. Therefore, he participated with the sadaebu in spite of his humble social position, the monk.
Vol.19 No.2
Srimaladevi-si.hanada-sutra narrated by Mrs. Seungman(勝萬夫人) is a buddhist scripture which was completed in mid- Mahayana Buddhism in the 3rd and 4th century B.C. and is mainly based on Ilseung Idea[一乘思想] and Yeoraejang Idea[如來藏 思想]. The Srimaladevi-si.hanada-sutra was narrated by a common woman who did not enter the priesthood while Yumagyong[維摩經] was narrated by a Buddhist devotee, It says that right ways should be followed and is summarized as follows: First, all the pledges a Bodhisattva has are included in a large desire that right ways are followed. So, that right ways should be followed is a large desire. Second, ‘right ways[正法]’ indicate that right ways should be followed. Therefore, that right ways should be followed is paramita. Third, to follow right ways, we have to throw away our bodies, lives and properties. Fourth, that ‘right ways should be followed’ is maha-yana[大乘] as it produces great laws in the mundane and Buddhist world. To put it in a word, ‘that right ways should be followed’ means maha-yana. Our society is going towards a multicultural society[多文化社會]. Many problems found in the process are a topic our society has to discuss. This study suggests that the solution should be found from the maha-yana told in Srimaladevi-simhanada-sutra.
