Sex education can be defined in two different ways. Narrowly it means to inform young people of physical aspects of a human body, such as the structure and function of genital organs, the process of conception and the birth control methods. However many theorists insist that sex education should be understood and practiced in the broader scope. According to the contemporary theorist, sex education should begin right after birth and be carried on by the parents through everyday life. In Korea, under the extended family structure it is considered proper that a husband and a wife should suppress their natural affection and any direct mention of sex was unnatural for children and to learn sexual behavior unconsciously. They are not supposed to ask about birth or sex organs. Korean society is westernized and changed rapidly since the Korean war and the influence of mass communication makes the change more drastic. The moral a attitudes in the past can not meet the needs of younger generation anymore. They need rather novel sexual attitudes and moral in order to adjust themselves in a contemporay society. The growing needs of appopriate sex education for the younger generation was felt urgent among many aducators. However, there has been any comprehensive survey on the sex education at home. The purpose of this paper is to find out the mothers' attitides and methods of sex education practiced at home. The basic assumptions applied in this paper were drawn from Freud's instinct theory and Bernstein's developmental theory. Freud insisted that every human being has "libidal" trends from the start. Different from Freud's theory, Bernstein believes that children's sexual concept is developed according to the six stages which is similar to the stages of the concept development. In this study 1000 mothers who live in Seoul were randomly selected and given questionaires, 500 persons responded. The important results are as follows. 1. Most of the subjects do not understand the actual meaning of sex education, although they understand that sex education is indispensable for their children to have a sound sexual relationships in their later years. 2. Mothers do not believe that the sexual concept of children is developed according to the six different stages. Therefore, proper sex education for different ages is neither recognized not performed at home. 3. Depending on the years of schooling, mothers have different attitudes in understanding and practicing sex education.
