After the completion of construction, tunnel structures require persistent maintenance and repair due to aging. Man made effects such as pressure on rock, infiltrated water, air pollution, defects during construction, and train loadings cause the load level on the tunnel increases and the resisting capacity decreases. Thus, to maintain the safety and durability of the tunnel, the cost for maintenance and repair should be increased. In this paper, the causes and classification system of collapse provided by the railroad network of the Deutsche National Railroad Corporation for selecting appropriate maintenance and repair methods are described. Also, the analysis for identifying accurate collapse reason and the research results for appropriate maintenance and repair methods are conducted via two field examples with different characteristics.

Drainage system in railroad has a very important role to operate the system. Drainage system should be carefully considered in design and construction due to a difficult access to the system during operation. In this paper, recent case histories were presented, which showed how an improper drainage system affects the railroad operation.

Since 1980's in U.S.A and Japan, the studies on increasing the bearing capacity of railway roadbed using geocell have been conducted for repair and reinforcement of railways constructed on soft soils. In this study, the railway roadbed system, used for repair and reinforcement of existing railways in Korea, has been analyzed and investigated results of the previous studies conducted in Korea and other nations, And the method for estimating the railway roadbed thickness was developed based on the equivalent method using the multi-layer theory and the deformation modulus Ev.

The main purpose of this study is to collect and examine the reinforcement of railway roadbed which are under used in developed countries, in the hope that this study will be used as a reinforce for future study on reinforcement for railway roadbed by Geosynthetics. Following are the main ideas of the study. 1. Geogrid laid under the ballast can prevent the clay pumping and reinforce of soft roadbed made of cohesive soil. 2. Many developed countries have utilized the structure of railway roadbed and specifications that are most suitable for its own country, under considering the features of natural environment, the traffic volume, the shapes of sleeper and the raw materials of roadbed. 3. Since the use of Geosynthetics in railway industry is increasing all around the world, the study on reinforcement for railway roadbed which is economical and easily done, is inevitably required in this country.

Geosynthetics have been used especially German Railway earthworks from the outset and have proved successful in both technical and economic terms. The main functions of geosynthetics in a railroad subbase are seperation and filtration, but in addition also drainage and reinforcement can be of relevance. In order to ,quantify the influence of geosynthetics layers, fatigue loading tests were carried out in, Germany. In a fatigue loading test with 5 million load cycles it was found out that the bearing capacity of the subgrade protective layer(SPL) can be increased by reinforcing geosynthetics. Also the strong reduction of the settlement showed the positive influence of geosynthetics. In summary it is to say that geosynthetics used at fine grained subsoils lead to a strong improvement of the whole railroad system.

Geosynthetics have been used for developed Countries and especially German Railways earthworks from the outset and have proved successful in both technical and economic terms. On going developed is being undertaken with a view to further improving results. The main areas of application are filtering, filtering/separation, reinforcement, sealing and protection. (e.g. against erosion or UV - radiation) Examples of such applications as implemented in practise are described and illustrated in the article. Since the use of Geosynthetics in railway industry is increasing all around the World, the study on the use of Geosynthetics for Railway Construction which is economical and easily done, is inevitably required in this country.

Recently, improvement projects of existing rail roads and new high speed rail projects increased. The trend of high speed rail and long tunnel causes studies of rail road tunnel performance and safety control. In this paper, case histories of safety measures on rail road tunnel in Europe were collected and evaluated. Base on these case histories, a safety control of rail road tunnel in Korea is proposed and evaluated.
