존 스타인벡의 『불만의 겨울』에서의 이선 홀리의 양면적 이미지
황치복 미래영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학 Vol.19 No.2
The Winter of Our Discontent, the last of John Steinbeck’s novels, is another richly textured work set in the present day; in this case, 1960 America. The story follows Ethan Allen Hawley from Good Friday to Independence Day, as he negotiates the financial and ethical problems set before him. His transformation is told against a backdrop of Christian religious holidays, with Ethan’s development following the death and resurrection of Christ. Also in this work, Steinbeck reminds us of the horrific name of Judas Iscariot as he recounts the story of a modern Christ. A major character, Ethan becomes a composite Christ/Judas figure in the work. Therefore this study aims to study how Ethan’s image of Judas changes and develops to obtain his own property and fame in the present day which acts of betrayal are accepted as normal and betrayal is now glorified rather than despised. Through Ethan’s change and struggle, this study reveals that Steinbeck’s realism has much to do with the question of morality.
