In design of muffler, Noise reduction is most important point in the past. By reason of this factor, study of muffler mainly used acoustic analysis for predictive modeling. but, recently muffler design factor, back pressure reduction and enhanced engine performance is more important than noise reduction. and developing process uses FEM and fluid analysis. but these process is not clearly defined the value for effective pressure.<br/> In this study, make experiment in muffler and semi-active muffler and analysis back pressure. This has made it possible to optimize muffler design, and defined design variable.

Automobile manufacturers regarding stability, economic environmental-friendly problems by the development of the road, supply of the automobile, environmental problem as designing the exhaust system. Increasingly strict environmental regulations to lower fuel consumption and reduce emission. Also to reduce the noise and the vibration of the automobile. According to develop variable type muffler, dual muffler and active intelligence exhaust system unit. Improvement in engine performance and fuel consumption rate demand information of pressure fraction and heat characteristics. To be able to determine these factor for we experiment on each case of exhaust system unit. In this study, how back pressure is distributed in flow-through adapted semi-active muffler in exhaust system and components.and how to design muffler flexibleness, efficiency, lower back pressure and optimal performance. This study furnish basic data for engineers, technicians.

Since 1900 year, automobile companies have been beginning development of an electronic control engine. Almost equipments of an engine were changed into anelectronic control engine system at the present time. Also fault diagnosis of automobile engines using electronic equipments. So this experimental study used intake manifold pressure sensor of intake port of fuel injection control system in engine and compared waveform of intake manifold pressure sensor of each conditions.

Recently, the performance development of the exhaust system of a car is very important. The most important part of parts that constructing the exhaust system of a car is a muffler. The muffler reducing the exhaust noise from the engine influence on the engine performance directly. The inner parts of the muffler construct with the baffle and perforated pipes and so on. In the recent study, the study to design the semi-active muffler sensing the exhaust gas pressure controlling the back pressure variably with a variable valve progress activity. So that the inner parts of the muffler show the complicated turbulent flow phenomena because of pulsatile flow from the engine and the structural properties and so on. The qualitative and quantitative analysis about the turbulent flow phenomena of the inner parts of the muffler is required gradually. In this study, to analysis the flow field of the inner parts of the muffler, analysis results with the PIV measurement to be able to analysis the variable change of the time and the space. Therefore, try to show the design variables to need to design the inner parts of a muffler of a car.
