A large increase in the use of thin film coating of hydroxyapatite(HA) in implant dentistry is driven by the desire to take advantage of the excellent biocompatibility and high strength of HA coating. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of HA-coated implants by ion Beam Assisted Deposition(IBAD) method in comparison to the sand-blasted and machined surfaces. Osteoblast culture test, removal torque test and histomorphometric analysis were performed and the following results obtained; 1. Examination of the osteoblast cultures displayed no difference in the secretion of alkaline phosphatase between the various specimen, but IBAD with pure HA specimen showed low alkaline phosphatase secretion(p<0.05). 2. Removal torque tests showed HA-coated implants by IBAD method to be similar in high value to the implants with sand-blasted surface than the implants with machined surface. And the ovariectomized group showed low mechanical test value than the normal group(p<0.05). 3. Histomorphometrical comparisons were performed on undecalcified ground sections. HA-coated implants by IBAD method demonstrated the highest mean bone-to-metal contact ratio on all threads and 3-best consecutive threads, and the implants with sand-blasted surface and implants with machined surface was in the next consecutive order(p<0.05). HA-coated implants showed slightly higher bone-to- metal contact ratio than sand-blasted implants, but no statistically significant difference was obtained between the two materials. The ovariectomized group showed lower value of bone-to-metal contact ratio than the normal group, but no statistically significant difference was obtained between the two groups. 4. Evaluation of bone volume on all threads and 3-best consecutive threads showed no statistically significant difference among the different surface treatment groups, but showed lower bone volume in ovariectomized group than in the normal group(p<0.05). According tn these results, thin film coated implants with HA showed high bone contact ratio, bone volume and removal torque strength in the short term, but long term observation is needed.

The screw loosening appears to be the most common problem concerned with implant systems. Theoretical formulas are developed for the prediction of preload generated in the connecting screw of dental implant system during tightening since it is believed that the preload is associated with screw loosening. The screw loosing torques are measured for different implant systems with various connection types. The results of theoretical formulas are compared to that of the experiments. It is found that various geometrical parameters affect the screw loosening.

Bone resorption occurs during the implants surgical operation. It is one of the reason causing the implant loss. But it does not always lead to implant loss. Among the factors proposed as the possible causes for this bone resorption were surgical trauma or inadvertent stress during implant surgical operations. Other factors proposed to be related to bone resorption are the implant surface and bone characteristics. In this study, the optimization and sensitivity analysis of implant design parameters considering bone resorption were conducted using the design of experiment (DOE), finite element analysis (FEA) and design optimization tool (DOT). The correlations between the optimal design parameters and bone resorption are established. The obtained information is used for better implant design.

This research focuses on the development of an analytical model for loosening mechanism of dental implant system. The model is utilized for predictions of preload values for internal and external types of implants. It identifies the effects of various parameters such as friction, geometric factors and mechanical properties on the loosening mechanism of the implant system. The results of analytical model are compared to those of the numerical method for validation.

A comparative study on the implant screw loosening under the initial clamping force and cyclic loads was conducted. The experiments were performed to evaluate the screw loosening behavior of the internal and external implant systems. It was found that the screw loosening torques of implant systems were significantly affected by the way how the abutment and fixture were connected due to the difference in the load transfer mechanism between abutment and fixture..

Screw loosening is considered to be a common problem with implant system. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of screw loosening of two types of implant systems with different connection. Theoretical formulas are developed to predict tightening and loosening torque values by combining the equations related to the screw mechanism. This enables identification of the effects of the parameters such as friction, geometric properties of the screw, the taper angle, and elastic properties of the materials on the mechanics of the system. The screw loosening torque are measured for different implant systems with various connection types. The results of theoretical formulas are compared to that of the experiments and analysis of the finite element method (FEM).

The occlusal loads are appled in the various directions to tooth. The effects of inclination angle of load on optimal design parameters are studied. The optimal design parameters are determined for loads with inclination angles of 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° in the one-body type implant system using the finite element analysis and design optimization tool (DOT). The correlations between the optimal design parameters and inclination angle of load are established. The obtained information is used for better implant design.
