The purpose of this study was to understand the demand of occupants indoor air quality improvement by surveying the occupants that moved in the new apartment house with in six months. The survey was composed of details for the occupants, the present condition of indoor air environment and sick house syndrome experience and the improvement device for indoor air quality. The results of this study were as follows; the occupants thought the principal pollutant is the architectural materials that were constructed in the house before their moving. So they had a tendency to exchange general materials to environment-friendly materials in the living room first of all. Finally the use of environment-friendly materials among the governmental policies for decreasing sick house syndrome, corresponded to the demand of occupants.

The purpose of this study was to understand the actual condition of indoor air quality in the new apartment house. So the measurement was conducted on the 387 samples located in Seoul and the metropolitan area by environmental standard method for indoor air quality. Because there are about 50% of new apartment house. The concentration was analyzed about basic character, measurement area and architecture materials, according to the indoor air quality guideline of new apartment house issued by the Ministry of Environment. As a result, this study generally found out that formaldehyde and toluene were higher and benzene was too lower than the guideline without regard to grouping.

The low VOCs emission building materials have been developed for solving sick house syndrome. The pollutants emission of building materials was generally by environmental standard method for indoor air quality of Ministry of Environment, but this method did not reflect the various characteristic of the building materials. And the pollutants emission did not measure properly. So the purpose of this study was to propose the improved emission test method considering characteristic of the building materials, especially for the paints.

This study aims to investigate the concentration of formaldehyde, which is one of the most well-known VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds), and analyze the characteristic of its concentration in newly-constructed apartment houses. The field measurement was conducted in different five apartment house complexes located in Seoul and Kyonggi province. Indoor concentration of formaldehyde showed between 0.018ppm and 0.607ppm. The average concentration was 0.150ppm and above the foreign standards. It result from the new construction. Also, the higher measurement position and the bigger measurement extent, the greater concentration of formaldehyde. And it was treated by the statistic program to examine the objective relations among the concentration of formaldehyd, measurement factors and basic thermo-environment elements. As a result, the temperature, the relative humidity and the measurement position had a validly effect on the concentration of formaldehyde and the temperature extremely influenced it.
