Vol.0 No.178

This study attempted to summarize Yoon, Lim-ho"s novel on the theme and tendency of the work by the time of writing, to examine the factors that led to such tendency and to clarify the whole picture. Yoon, Lim-ho"s novel criticizes the fact that ethics has disappeared due to money, although it has been financially supported by the reform and opening and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China. And although Joseonjok acquired wealth through Korea with the Korea‐China exchange, they show the contact with Korea strengthens the perception that the hometown of their birthplace is China. Yoon, Lim-ho"s novel is limited in that it cannot properly represent the reality of the rapidly changing Joseonjok and present the necessary values for a new age. It is also pointed out that the topic has been distracted by the loss of novelistic reality by hanging in the fantasy world and wildness since the middle of 1990s, and by listing events beyond necessity. These limitations in Yoon, Lim-ho"s works are the result of the artist"s inability to interpret the changes of the times and fail to provide novel alternatives for the direction of the new age.

Vol.- No.34

In writing a novel, historical materials are chosen by the writer`s ideology. The present study examined how a writer`s idea and the country`s ideology affect the writer`s choice of materials from historical facts through Ahn Su-gil`s Bukgando and Lee Geun-jeon`s Gonaneui Nyeondae. The former mainly deals with incidents involving nationalists waging anti Japanese movements in Manchuria during the rule of Japanese imperialism, and the latter deals with incidents led by the Chinese Communist Party. These show that the novelists chose materials out of the history of anti Japanese struggles in the Manchurian region according to their own idea as well as their country`s ideology. For this reason, neither of the two works covers incidents involving Korean socialists in anti Japanese struggles in the Manchurian region. This is because they reinterpreted the history of anti Japanese struggles in the area by their own view. In this sense, both Bukgando and Gonaneui Nyeondae are considered to show consistency in using historical facts in Manchuria selectively as the materials of the stories according to the writers` ideology.

Vol.- No.42

Choseonjok came over to Korea, their brethren country, with their own traditions and culture. Contacting Korean people and culture, however, they found themselves far different from Koreans who they had believed to be similar to them and became skeptical of their identity. As they experienced Korea frequently and contacted Korean people with sufficient information on Korea, they came to admit difference between Korean people and themselves and confirmed their national identity as Chinese citizens. Koreans also began to understand Choseonjok objectively and treat them within institutional framework. Choseonjok built their network in Korea, identified and objectified their cultural characteristics that distinguished them from Koreans, and established the identity of Choseonjok as a minority in China by viewing their relation with Chinese objectively. Choseonjok are the descendents of Koreans who left the Korean Peninsula for economic or political reasons. The Korean refugees waged fights for independence in Manchu, and made brilliant contributions to the foundation of China. Their glorious history is the reason why they expect to be treated honorably in China and Korea. However, the reality is different. Choseonjok is nothing but a minority living in the northeastern border area in China, and a long-forgotten brother who came home in quite a different look and is making nuisances in Korea. Choseonjok should look at this situation cool-headly and establish a new identity.

Vol.- No.13

Thks thesis is aimed to clarify the modernity in the sexuality of Lee Hyoseok's latter novels. Although his former novels is concentrated on the history, reality and ideology, his latter novels on the nature and sexuality. This change in his novels is started from <Orion-gwa Imgeum(오리온과 임금)> written by 1932. In this work, a man who conflicts between the ideology and the sexualiy is attached to the sexuality because he thought the sexuality is fundamental factor in human being. Thereafter Lee Hyoseok deals with the sexuality as important theme in his novels. But we can't understand his novels is vulgar and masscultural. For the sexuality in his novels is the symbol of the body in modern philosophy. The human is organized the mind and the body. But one has thought the mind is original facter divided the human into the animal since Greek. Since latter twenty century one has changed his thought about the mind and body. Modern Philosophers have thought the body is the essence of haman being not the mind. The sexuality in Lee, Hyo-seok's novel is reflected in modern philosophy stress the body. So I conclude that Lee, Hyo-seok's novels was very modern in his generatuion.

Vol.- No.48

Life in Manchuria described in repatriate novels is largely divided into two types. One is a somewhat stable life of those who became a reporter or an official, and the other is a toilsome life of those who went over to Manchuria to escape poverty but could not take off the bridle of poverty in the land. In general, people belonging to the former group went to Manchuria after the foundation of Manchukuo for better future and maintained their official position. On the contrary, those belonging to the latter group were divided again into those who returned home after the liberation out of their yearning for their hometown and those who settled in Manchuria because their future in their hometown was uncertain as they did not have farmlands. These differences appearing in repatriate novels demonstrate clearly the importance of actual experiences that the writers have. Novelists who acted in the Peninsula did not understand how the home was perceived by Korean people in Manchuria, and thus to them it seemed natural for Koreans in Manchuria to return home on the liberation. As the real life was not as they expected, however, many Korean people in Manchuria tried to decide between repatriation and settlement depending on situation, with preparing some amount of money by selling their properties or food. While they were hesitating, the Korean Peninsula was divided and they became Chinese citizens. As a result, they lost the method of and reason for repatriation and could not help settling in Manchuria.

Vol.- No.58

Korean contemporary literature has formed its character of national literature by integrating localities throughout the country, and in this sense, locality has been an important subject of research on Korean contemporary novels. Understanding the individuality inherent in the locality of each province of the Korean Peninsula, exploring the background of the development of such locality, and analyzing the pattern that the locality is represented in novels will be crucial research themes related to Korean contemporary novels and locality. It is one of important research efforts related to Korean contemporary novels and locality to divide Korean contemporary novels into central and provincial ones and to inquire into provincial literature. This provides an opportunity to reflect on the past research attitude that has focused on the central literary circle. Efforts to excavate writers and their works that have been neglected as provincial literature, to introduce them into the academic circle, and to evaluate them will enrich Korean contemporary novels and open a new ground for research on Korean contemporary novels. Despite these meanings, research on provincial literature should give up the past perspective that considers the central and provincial literary circles to be in a center.periphery relation and views them as confrontational to each other. The relationship between world literature and local literature in which Western literature occupies the central position requires a post.colonial approach, but the same approach is not applicable to Korean literature because Korean contemporary novels have formed the core of national literature by integrating provincial literature. In this sense, it is necessary for research on provincial literature to assume the attitude of viewing the center and the provinces as complementary to each other. Research on Korean contemporary novels needs to make localism related approaches to novels that deal with minorities found in Korean society such as migrant workers, married immigrant women, Chinese Choseonjok living in Korea, North Korean defectors, Chinese residents, and mixed.blood people. Minority issues observed in Korean contemporary novels are not coincident with localism, but such approaches may be necessary because if minorities are approached from the viewpoint of the center.periphery relation, they may be understood in relation to localism.

Vol.- No.54

The Cultural Revolution (CR) in the Korean Chinese society had some particularities while showing similar aspects to those of the CRunfolding over entire China. They included prosecution due to the gap between the Chinese Communist Party`s ideology and the reality of the minor ethnicity, and the conflicts with the Han Chinese due to the conflict between South and North Korea at the time of the Cultural Revolution. After the CR, a considerable number of Korean-Chinese novels have addressed it from various angles. This paper tries to clarify the aspects and meanings of some Korean-Chinese novels that have the CR as their subject matters by classifying them into five types including those addressing the hardship undergone in the course of the abnormal Cultural Revolution, those repenting the assentation to the CR situations of mutual criticisms and rebukes, those criticizing the fallacies in the national policies in the period of the Cultural Revolution oriented toward socialism, those accusing the particularities of the CR in Yenbien, and those missing the period of the Cultural Revolution in the past or dealing only with subject matters that just strengthen the theme of the CR. Though the CR was an event that made the Chinese have a very greattrauma, there have not been many Korean-Chinese novels that deal directly with it. We can conjecture some of the reasons. First of all, the time interval is still too short for novels to address the CR as their main subject matter since it left too tremendous hurts. Furthermore, it is also an important factor that it is difficult to deal with the CR as a narrative event since the perpetrators and the victims are not clearly distinguished. It is also a crucial reason that the reform and opening-up after the CR gave rise to radical social and economic changes, and the establishment of the significance of the CR was put aside due to the overwhelming historical event for the Korean-Chinese, the establishment of the diplomatic ties between Korea and China.
