        Streptomyces padanus for the Biological Control of Phytophthora capsici on Pepper Plants

        Streptomyces padanus IA70-5 has been shown to be a promising biological control agent for the suppression of pepper anthracnose. In this study, we assessed the potential use of strain IA70-5 as a biological control agent for Phytophthora blight caused by Phytophthora capsici. Strain S. padanus IA70-5 was found to inhibit the mycelial growth and zoosporangium formation of P. capsici causing Phytophthora blight on pepper plants. In experiments with hot pepper fruit, IA70-5 suppressed the progression of Phytophthora rot by over 90% in pre-inoculated treatments with culture suspension. In experiments with 60-day-old pepper plants, IA70-5 suppressed Phytophthora blight by over 90%. These results demonstrated the potential for S. padanus IA70-5 to provide a practical biological agent for the control of Phytophthora blight in the field.

        고추 탄저병 (Colletotrichum acutatum) 방제를 위한 Streptomyces padanus IA70-5의 평가

        고추에 큰 피해를 일으키는 탄저병에 대한 강한 길항력이 있는 세균을 선발하기 위해 선행연구에서 식물뿌리 시료로부터 분리하여 보관중인 세균들을 대상으로 검정에 사용하였다. 총 457균주로부터 IA70-5균주를 최종 선발하였고, 16S rDNA 염기서열 분석을 통해 Streptomyces padanus로 동정하였다. S. padanus IA70-5는 색소를 분비하지 않고 운동성이 없으며 전형적인 Streptomyces속에 속하는 세균들처럼 나선형의 형태를 이루고 있었다. S. padanus IA70-5 균주는 in vitro에서 Colletotrichum acutaum의 균사생장, 포자발아, 그리고 부착기 형성을 효과적으로 억제하였다. 실내 고추 과실에 대하여 병원균 접종 전 IA70-5 배양액 처리 시 약 90%의 탄저병 억제효과를 나타내었다. 본 연구결과를 통하여 길항방선균 S. padanus IA70-5는 고추 탄저병을 억제하는 효과가 있음을 확인하였다. To select bacterial strains with antifungal activity against an anthracnose fungal disease causing damage severely on hot pepper, previous isolates obtained from plant root samples were screened. Among 457 isolates, IA70-5 isolate was finally selected and identified as Streptomyces padanus based on 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Strain IA70-5 is non-pigmenteous, non-mobile, and filamentous. S. padanus IA70-5 inhibited effectively the mycelium growth, spore germination, and appressorium formation of Colletotrichum acutatum in vitro. The results of this study demonstrated that IA70-5 strain, especially applied on fruit of hot pepper, decreased disease incidence 90% for pre-inoculation before pathogen treatment. Taken together, S. padanus IA70-5 strain is a promising biological control agent to control of a major fungal pepper disease, anthracnose.

        Rhizopus stolonifer에 의한 산딸기 무름병 발생

        Rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer on June, 2008 occurred on Rubus crataegifolius Bunge in the box at Jinju City Wholesale Market of Agricultural Products at Gyeongnam province in Korea. The infected fruits were rapidly water-soaked, softened, black and eventually rotted. The symptoms occurred after infecting wounds at harvest time. The colony were white to light brown, formed much sporangiospores. The optimum temperature of the fungus on potato dextrose agar was 30oC. Sporangiophores were 12~25 μm in width. Sporangia were globose or hemispheric, white at first and gradually to black, and 82~195 μm in size. Columella were hemispheric, and 70~92 μm in size. Sporangiospores were irregular round or oval, brownishblack and 9~21×7~8 μm in size. On the basis of symptom, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity of the fungus, the causal fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot by R. stolonifer on R. crataegifolius in Korea.         Phyllosticta cruenta에 의한 둥굴레 갈색점무늬병

        Brown leaf spot caused by Phyllosticta cruenta from 2007 to 2009 occurred severely in an herbs exhibition on Doonggulle (Polygonatum odoratum) at Gangju pond in Jeongchon-myon, Jinju city, Gyeongnam province,Korea. The typical symptoms of this disease were appeared on the brown leaf spot of leaves. Lesions on the leaves were appeared elliptical or irregular with 2~8 mm in size. Infected leaves were wilted, blighted and eventually died. Pycnidiospores and pycnidia of the fungus were abundantly formed on PDA. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was 20~25℃. Pycnidiospores were not readily formed on PDA, colorless in color, globose~subglobose in shape, 10~18×5~12 μm in size and appendage hanged 4~15 μm in size. Pycnidia were globose~subglobose in shape, dark brown in color and 60~162×70~174 μm in size. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Phyllosticta cruenta (Kunze: Fries) Kickx. This is the first report on the brown leaf spot of Doonggulle caused by P. cruenta in Korea.
