A test bench which is consisted of blower, heater, air flow meter, driving unit for electric EGR valve, and cooling system for EGR cooler was developed to evaluate the characteristics of the modulated EGR valve. Measurements using EGR valve of the 2.0 L diesel engine were carried out. For this valve, the relation between duty signal and valve lift shows non-linearity and hysteresis phenomenon, and the response time at opening is 84.2 ms. The mass flow rate through the valve is almost zero under 40% duty and is increased according to the duty signal between 40% to 60% duty. For more than 60% duty, the mass flow rate is dependent only the pressure difference. The maximum ratio of the effective area is 0.55. For the over 60% duty the effective area is almost constant and independent of the mass flow rate, but it is decreased as the mass flow rate increases for between 40% and 60% duty. These data will be used to develop the new engine using the modulated EGR and VGT system.

An attempt was made to estimate the EGR mass flow rate as a function of sensor signals flowing into ECU of current or future production engines. The EGR estimation model is comprised of the thermal-fluid governing equations for the engine components constituting the EGR loop, which are solved given the ECU signal variables. The model equations were completed once the model coefficients were extracted from the curve-fitting to the engine or rig test results. The preliminary model results successfully reproduced the trend of the measured EGR mass flow rate but consistently showed a slightly lower estimation which will be the point of the future improvement.

A test bench which is consisted of roots blower, pulsator, air flow meter, driving unit for VGT actuator, transmitters for temperature and pressure, and the rotational speed sensor was developed to evaluate the characteristics of the VGT system. Measurements using VGT of the 2.0 L diesel engine were carried out. The corrected mass flow rate and the pressure ratio for the compressor of the VGT are related directly with the rotational speed, but they are independent of the rack position of the VGT. The pressure ratio and the corrected mass flow rate of the turbine of the VGT are related directly with the rack position of the VGT, but they don’t have any relation with the rotational speed. The mechanical efficiency of the VGT is higher than the conventional turbocharger in the wide range. The efficiency at the 0.03 kg/s of the mass flow rate is 4.36 times as high as that of the conventional turbocharger. These data will be used to develop the new engine equipped with the VGT system.

Recently social awareness on environmental issues including air pollution has been raised, and related laws and regulations have been reinforced. In the circumstances, the development of common rail diesel engine has been progressed, which can correspond with EURO IV & V and has low-noise, strong-power and excellent fuel efficiency. This research aims to develop parts for Advanced Fuel/Oil Filtering Re-circulation applicable to this kind of regulation proof engines. These parts can playa role of converting traditional air emission type crankcase into recovery type crankcase so that the engine can deal with environmental regulations, which do not allow minimal amount of toxic gas discharge.
