Neurobiological or psychological perspective have been taken when we study about the cause of mental illness. However, most studies have covered only proximal causality of mental illness but little on their ultimate causality. ‘Evolutionary perspective’, which has recently drawn attention from many academic fields, can suggest a number of theories for the ultimate causality of mental illnesses. Particularly, a theory called ‘meme theory’ focuses on the coevolution of genes and environment and can help explain correlations between genetic traits and environmental features of a mental illness. In this paper, we introduced the meme theory with a summary of its developmental aspect and examined whether it can be useful in finding the ultimate cause of mental illness.
