        1. The author, during his stay in U.S.A. had treated 6 cases of acute depression who were Orientals residing in U.S.A. and had tried or succeeded in obtaining permanent residency. 2. 5 cases out of 6 had past history of having had psycliatric disorders or psycliatric treatments in their mother countries. 3. All cases developed depression within a period of one year after arrival at U.S.A, and within a period of 3 to 6 months after having tried or succeeded in obtaining immigrants visa status. 4. In all cases the precipitating factor of acute depression was their arguments and verbal protests against authority figures, and it manifests their poor control and handling of aggression which are considered to be one of characteristics of oriental cultures. 5. The authority figures were not host countryborn ones but were Orientals or European immigrants. If seems they appear to be parental figures to the patients, they represent cultural duality weigh new and old ones, and the patients were unconsciously asking their parents to solve their ambivalence regrading to immigration. 6. Although the treatment periods were variable from one-shot interview to one year of hospitalization, 4. out of 5. attempted cases were markedly improved. 7. If many extra-psychic factors appeared favorable to immigration and unless they presented difficulty in communication the author suggests the out come of treatment would be better if threaten by host country-born therapists using supportive technique. 8. 6 dreams from one case who during treatment had decided for immigration were presented to show progress of his unconscious thoughts into that decision.

      • 청년기심리 (靑年期心理)

        조두영,Cho, Doo-Young 한국정신신체의학회 1997 정신신체의학 Vol.5 No.2

One faces four major developmental tasks to achieve in young adulthood, ages between 20 and 40 : intimacy, vocation, marriage and child-rearing. Intimacy is the capacity to commit oneself to concrete affiliations and partnerships and to develop the ethical strength to abide by such commitments, even though they call for significant sacrifices and compromises. Through vocation and marriage young adults become united to networks of persons, find tasks that demand involvement, and gain roles into which they fit and are fitted and which help define their identities. An occupation represents much more than a set of skills and functions : it means a way of life. The extent of vocational choice increases with educational level, and the unconscious factors are frequency the decisive element. The vocational choice stare with fantasy choices in childhood, passes through tentative choices in adolescence, realistic choices in college days, and crystallized choices in post-college days, and finally ends up to the choice of specification. Along with the hazards and the need for realignment of personality functioning, the marriage brings with it new opportunities for self-fulfillment and completion. Motives other than a romantic love gain more importance in the decision to marry and in the choice of a partner. The impulsions to marry are sexual gratification, the desire to propagate, narcissistic gratification, and a need of interdependence. Many factors such as oedipal wishes, sexuality and sexual attractions, socio-economic classes, and geography involve in selection of marriage partner. There are also various motivations to marry a romantic love, the desire for a home of one's own, sexual attractions, the wish for security and a shelter, and the wish for children. The hostile marriage, the marriage on the rebound, the marriage rooted in rescue fantasies, and sado-masochistic marriage are the examples of pathological marriages. A successful marriage will usually both Lead to and require a marked reorganization of the personality structure of each partner that will influence the lurker personality development of each. Many marital problems are largely dependent upon the personality characteristics of one partner which might well create difficulties no manor who was the spouse.

The decision to tell or not to tell a patient he is terminally illed and is dying is largely an indidual matter, varying with personalities involved, and opinions vary as to the best polyicy. Tqe author has reviewed various studies on this subject, in which some has taken the view that all dying patients should be told the absolute truth and some has taken the opposite. This study tried to find out what attitudes Korean physicians have toward telling-truth. The questionnaires concerning those attitudes and policy were mailed in 1979 to a sample of 600 physicians who were full-time faculty staffs in clinical medicine among 14 medical schools in Korea, and after receiving 156 physicians’ responses the author reported the following results ; 1. 5096 of the physicians either never tell a patient he has a terminal illness or usually do not tell; 18% either always tell or usually toll; 32% do not have a definite policy on it. 2. Those attitudes of the physicians seem not being affected by their religions. 3. 6296 of the physicians are in favor of being told the truth upon their impending death. 4. Two most frequent rationales of telling-truth to the dying patient are for the psychological preparation of death by the patient and for the right of the patient to know, while the rationale of the opposite opinion is for the fear of severe psychic trauma, anxiety, depression, refusal of the treatment and possible suicide. 5. As for who should be the first imformer to the patient in case of telling-truth, 52% of the physicians choose the treating physicians and 3896 chooes the relatives. 6. As their clinical experiences increase and as they are getting older, Korean physicians tend to increasingly withhold the truth to the dying patient, up to the point of 30 years of experiences from when the percentage of the physicians who tell the truth sharply increases.

        (1) This study was intend to examplify the way of Freudian psychoanalytic approach to poetry, by analyzing unconscious materials and motivations of three poems written by Yi-Sang who has kept a notoriety as the most difficult poet to understand in the recent history of Korean literature, and it could be also, the second part of upsycho analytic studies on Yi-Sang”, related with the author’s previous article, “analysts of Yi-Sang s early works (focused on the Maiden ISIovel, December 12th)”. (2) In the first part of the article, the author has made a review of psychological interpretations of creative process in poetry done by poets themselves (from Wordsworth to Spender), and reorganized their notions in terms of psychoanalytic approach applying the theories of Freud, Kris, and others on creative process. (3) Then the author has reconstructed Yi-Sang’s personal history from the birth up to the point of writing those 3 poems. (4) The author could uncover from the poem,“the first memorandum on the line”,his conflict, between unconscious wish to flee from the adopted parents into the arms of the natural mother and the counterforce to rationalize hia being as that his natural mother might have had neglected him during the pre-adoption period, from the poem, “a strange reversible reaction”,his ambivalence to his adopted father and the natural parents, and his volcanic rage toward the adopted mother, and from the third poem, ^physical exercise”, his feelings of jealcmsy and sibling rivalry toward the younger brother who stayed with the natural parents.

        (1) The author has made a brief historical revlew of thfe thfeories of psychdanalytic explorations and understandings in arts and creative works. (2) The author has reconstructed Yi~Sang,s personal history up until he wrote his maiden work, ‘December 12th, a novel, in a psychiatric sense. (3) The author has made a brief summary out of the long story of the above novel. (4) The author has compared the content of the novel with his personal history, and found there were many similarities between the settings and characteristics of the heroes and his own family members, which led the author to hypothesize that to analyze the novel was an easy and safe way to understand his personality make-up, the contents of his fantasies and daydreams, and some materials of his unconscious and it’s affect, and vice versa. (5) It seemed Y i had percepted his being-adopted by his father’s elder brother as being abandoned by the real parents, which had created intense feelings of rejection from and revenge against the latters thereafter. And it seemed that as an adopted son Y i had received double-bind messages out of indulging love and unreasonable angers from the step-father and hostilities from the stepmother, which, in thrn, had made him feel confused, angered, humiliated, and depressed, (6) In the novel, Y i told us the poverty, accidents, fire-settings, deaths from gunshot, psychosis and railroad suicide of all heroes, painted with a gloomy and bloody atomosphere, which made the author to interconnect those with Yi,s uncon-scious aggressive drives directed toward two pairs of parents, his friends of schooldays who had humiliated and pitied on him, and toward himself.

The author has previously explored the psychodynamics of a Korean writer, Chang-Sup Sohn, based on his autobiographic novel, and the creative process of his maiden work in psychoanalytic point of view. In this article, the focus is placed on the psychodynamics of the creative processes on first three short-stories after the maiden work, namely "a Death Record", "a Rainy Day" and "Being 'Realistic". "A Death Record" is a story about a young man, whose personality is described as similar to that of the writer, supporting his friend and the family. This friend had married to the hero's fiancee while the hero was imprisoned as a political prisoner in North Korea. The friend is in terminal state of pulmonary tuberculosis, and becomes paranoid. After witnessing a physical violence of the friend against the friend's wife, the hero had a dream in that he fought against and wrestled with his friend to protect the woman. Using other materials in the story the author interpreted this dream as the fulfillment of the unconscious erotic wishes of the hero directed to the wife of his friend. Expanding this interpretation further to the creative process of the writer the author concluded that the fulfillment of the unconscious incestuous wishes toward his widowed mother who had seduced and deserted him during his latency period was the nuclear creative motivation of this fiction. "A Rainy Day" is a story about a young unmarried crippled woman, who was deserted without any mean in an half-ruined cottage totally exposed to the heavy rains in summer monsoon season during the Korean War by her elder brother. It was found that the creative motivation originated from the writer's suffering from persistent enuresis in childhood ; the cottage represented the enuretic body, and the young woman the writer as a child. "Being Realistic" is a story in that a passive poor young man loses his lover to an aggressive, able and greedy middle-aged man, and an orphan girl in anaclitic depression whose widowed mother stays in North Korea across th front dies of pulmonary tuberculosis. The author concluded that the writer's previous affective state and longing for the mother in childhood after his widowed-mother deserted him by elopement seemed to be the base of the creative impulse of this story.
