Zr L_(2,3) x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on pure ZrO₂ and Y-stabilized cubic zirconia, Zr_(0.86)Y_(0.14)O₂, are reported. Detailed comparison of the L_(2,3) "white line" features on the two compounds evidences the increase of Zr d-orbital charge upon Y-substitution. This is consistent with the proximity of O-vacancies to Zr defect-sites in the Y-substituted material. The XAS based estimate of the induced defect Zr d-charge is found to be consistent with the proposed O-vacancy model.
