The relationship between histological findings of fatty liver and blood composition was investigated using liver biopsy materials and blood obtained under and after operation of 38 Holstein-Friesian cows with abomasal displacement. The results were summarized as follows: The cows with more than 40% fat in the liver were 36.8%(14/38, Ⅲ group), those with 20-40% fat in that were 34.2%(13/38, Ⅱ group) and those with 0-20% fat in that were 28.9%(11/38, Ⅰ group), respectively. The age, body weight and body condition score of Ⅱ and Ⅲ group were higher than those of Ⅰ group. Consequently, high-yielding and fat cows were thought to be connected with the formation of present fatty liver. The levels of serum NEFA of 3 groups at the time of operation tended to be higher than those at 2 weeks after operation, and those levels of Ⅱ and Ⅲ group were significantly higher than those of Ⅰ group. The levels of serum total cholesterol and serum phospholipid of Ⅱ and Ⅲ group at the time of operation tended to be lower than those of Ⅰ group, and the levels of serum phospholipid of 3 groups at the time of operation tended to be lower than those at 2 weeks after operation. Consequently, those results suggested the presence of the lipid synthetic disturbance in liver by present fatty liver. The levels of LDL and VLDL of 3 groups at the time of operation tended to be lower than those at 2 weeks after operation. This results suggested the presence of the synthetic disturbance of lipoprotein in liver by present fatty liver. The levels of serum AST. γ-GTP and total bilirubin of 3 groups were significantly higher than those at 2 weeks after operation, and those levels of Ⅲ group tended to be higher than those of Ⅰ and Ⅱ group. This results suggested the presence of the disturbance of hepatic in present cows with fatty liver such as the fat degeneration of hepatocyte and disturbance of bile excretion in liver. The levels of serum thyroxin(T4) and serum triiodothyronine(T3) of 3 groups at the time of operation tended to be lower than those at 2 weeks after operation, and levels of Ⅲ group tended to be lower than those of Ⅰ and Ⅱ group. This results suggested the presence of hypothyroidism by fat in the cows with present fatty liver. From the results described above, since the fatty livers were found frequently in the case with abomasal displacement, it was suggested that the disturbance of hepatic function by fatty liver markedly influenced for development of the abomasal displacement and the abomasal displacement was thought to develope the fatty liver.
