Evolutionary topology optimization using design space adjustment and refinement is used to optimize a knuckle in the suspension system of an automobile. Design space optimization used in this paper is a new efficient method for large-scale topology optimization by virtue of two reasons. First, the design space adjustment including multi-layer design space expansion and reduction is suitable for large-scale problems by virtue of its evolutionary nature. Second, the design space refinement can be done locally or globally when and where necessary and thus is very effective in obtaining a target resolution with much less number of elements. Minimum compliance for a knuckle is considered with the actual working condition to show the effectiveness and superiority of the new approach.

In this paper, a new type of an excavator which adopts distributed actuation mechanism was proposed to enhance excavation performance. Distributed actuation mechanism can provide additional design parameters to improve manipulation performance, as already shown in our previous paper with a robotic finger. For the purpose of performance enhancement, we first derived the digging force of the proposed excavator and then analyzed its efficiency. Through the numerical simulations, digging force was increased by 71%.

In this paper, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) inverter is designed and simulated with the motor. Since the PWM inverter generates the current harmonics, additional coreloss occurs into the rotor and stator. Using this co-simulation of the motor system, the shape optimization of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) is performed to minimize coreloss at the high speed. This paper suggests the optimized shape of the IPMSM minimizing the coreloss at high speed.

In order to achieve an enhanced fingertip force, the distributed actuation mechanism (DAM) was recently proposed. In this paper, the dual-mode operation of a three-link DAM manipulator is proposed to achieve either the maximum force or the maximum velocity along a given direction at a given end-effector position. Mathematical expressions are derived for the end-effector force and velocity. Then, the maximum force and velocity are determined with the limited motor power through the optimization. In order to demonstrate the performance of the dual-mode operation, the application examples are presented and experimentally validated.
