In this paper, the procedure to analyze cooling performance of the engine room for an excavator is presented by the help of a recently developed CFD technique. Engineers spend most of time and effort defining and generating model of the engine room to attain to accurate numerical result by a conventional CFD code, which makes it hard to get the optimal layout and part shape of cooling system. Therefore Cartesian(non-body-fitted) grid is introduced to reduce simulation time and to obtain more accurate result in this cooling system analysis. In addition, the well defined boundary condition for the CFD model and the experimental data of cooling components are also important factors in getting reasonable result. To verify the proposed procedure, the experimental results of the cooling system were compared with the simulation results. It is shown that the proposed simulation method and modeling technique are effective in the optimal cooling system design of an excavator engine room.
