李英澤 서울대학교 1954 서울대학교 論文集 Vol.1 No.-

Instructing professor, Dr Kim Doo Chong Western Medical Theory, subject of this thesis, was derⅣed from physiological theory of western medical science which was inserted in the translation of jesuit doctrine by Adom Schall, German, who had arrⅣed in 1622 at Peiking, China, as Jesuit misionary, This was reproduced by Lee Ik (李瀷, 1682-1763) in his book titled "Sungho Saisul (星湖僿設)" Through the contents of this medical theory therefore, one is able to test to what extend the physiological knowledge of western medical science was in 1622, that is the beginning of 17th century, and, moreover, on can tell what effect the introduction of this medical theory had upon practical use of medical art in our country. Historical investigation of the contents of this medical theory concludes as follows;― 1. This western medical theory was communicated down from mediaval medical knowledge, which was not beyond the extent of medical art of Greece, or Rome, and was not at all affected by anatomical knowledge of Andreas Ⅴeasalius and inmortal book published in 1543, which was influenced by Renaissance of 16th century. 2. That this medical theory was nothing more than mediaval physiological knowledge which was handed down from ancient medical knowledge is verified clearly by the fact that compared with excellent knowledge regarding the structure of the human body obtained by the study of many anatomists of 16th century promotion of physiological knowledge which had to be in proportion to that was slow and dull. This is because Olaudius Galen, authority of Roman medical art was still reserⅥng his own power until the beginning of the 17th century and this is a good datun to find out that in the realm of physiology, epoch-making promotion was not made until principle of blood circulation was explained by William Harvey or Britain in 1628, the early part of the 17th century. 3. It is difficult to point out concrete effect upon practical medicine of our country through the introduction of this medical theory, It is no doubt, however that by the group of pratice physicans, leading figure of whom was Lee Ik who introduced for the first time this medical theory, concern of medical sicence continued to be developed, which was thereafter an accelerator in conveying us a new knowledge of western medical art and at the same time I do not hesitate to declare that it was a warm nursery which could afford to recieve whenever any of the western medical knowledge.
